It's been a long and painful four months since
Pogoplug introduced its
second generation NAS-ifier, but those who've been holding out for additional functionality can finally buy in. In an effort to cater to these so-called "gamers," the company has enabled its device to stream multimedia content directly to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles; users will be able to access, share and stream media directly to their console from any local or remotely located Pogoplug, and if all goes well, your console should actually see the drives connected to the Pogoplug and the contents of other shared Pogoplugs
automatically. In related news, the unit is also now capable of pushing out offsite backups through a new version of Active Copy (shown above), so all that's left to do is hop online and suck down that tasty firmware update that should be waiting. Enjoy!

Pogoplug™ Launches Media Streaming and Offsite Backup
San Francisco, Calif. – March 16th, 2010 – Pogoplug, the multimedia sharing device that allows users to access their media anywhere on the web, today adds two new features to the award-winning device. Starting today, Pogoplug users can stream content to Xbox 360 and PS3 game consoles. The enhanced Active Copy feature now automatically copies files to a Pogoplug in another location.
With game console support, Pogoplug owners can now easily access, share, and stream their media directly to their Xbox 360 or PS3 from any local or remotely located Pogoplug. Gamers can watch home movies from their Pogoplug connected external hard drive on their Xbox 360 or PS3, share slideshows or listen to their entire music library without ever putting down their game controller. The Xbox 360 or PS3 automatically sees the drives connected to the Pogoplug and the contents of other shared Pogoplugs.
"By adding media streaming capabilities to the Xbox 360 and PS3 through your Pogoplug, we are making it easier than ever to access your media on your television," said Daniel Putterman, Cloud Engines CEO. "The new version of Active Copy is revolutionary. Now anyone can easily keep a safe copy of their files in another location."
Active Copy enables users to backup folders on their computer to a Pogoplug connected drive. Whenever new files are added, or changes are made to an existing file within the Active Copy enabled folder, these files are automatically copied to a chosen destination folder. Now users can also use Active Copy to automatically backup key files from one Pogoplug to another off-site Pogoplug, for additional safety and redundancy.
Both features came from user requests and both update to all Pogoplugs worldwide via an automatic firmware upgrade today. For support or other questions, please visit the support page at www.Pogoplug.com/support and the community website, www.pogoplugged.com.

@Indyaner
Your post suffers from cheap typing.
please tell me it comes in different colors...
@unknownsolo
Yes, but you can only get it in pink and crystal lite.
So is it streaming to the xbox locally, or does it have to stream up to the web and down to the xbox which would just suck up bandwidth. I would imagine/hope it's a local DLNA server.
@raulr2
Never mind. Now that I think about it, there's now way to stream to the xbox over the web (other than native apps) so it has to be local.
@raulr2
Accept with programs like PlayOn and the like. They allow the Xbox to see online directories as folders on a local drive.
I hope they add this functionality to the Seagate DockStar variant of the device, that runs the Pogoplug software.
So does this device support software RAID 1 yet? I don't see why it would be so hard since it runs Linux, unless there is some issue aware of with creating RAIDs out of USB attached drives.
What formats does this support? Is it dependent on what Xbox/PS3 support? Looking for some MKV love here
you can do this for free now it built in to the OS from windows XP to Windows 7

sony has info on how to do this as well
@SeanMW
You don't need Zune to do this.. or PlayOn, or the PS3 server. All you need is media player. As long as the media is in a format both can see, you can even stream to both at the same time.
I keep all my junk in mp4, works like a champ.
@SeanMW
That is actually not current, WMP 11& 12 replace it. However PS3MS from ps3mediaserver.org works better, it will transcode better than WMP12 and 11 doesn't transcode. Great for playing MKV files on either console.

@aroGADGET
biggest +1 for me & PS3MS is it will play ISO's
How about TiVo next guys.
The iConnect does very thing the POGOPLUG does.
Plus the iConnect can be used as a print server (up to 2 printers)
offers wireless and it comes in black all for $25 less than the Pogoplug.
However I would still like to see them go head-to-head. To see
which is faster, better etc.
@haz
What about tonido plug. Runs Ubuntu embedded, comes with a bunch of apps. Is completely 'hackable' meaning it can possibly be made to work with about any hardware out there
@airbag888 I use a Tonidoplug and I love it. It's a solid product and they keep adding features all the time (although XBox and PS streaming have been around for a while now, and backup has been around a while, too).
@airbag888
Thanks, I was unaware of the Tonidoplug.
I'll do a search for it.
@haz well, the iConnect doesn't seem to have an app in the first place but as you said, it would be really interesting to see these two guys in a heads up competition.
right now I am tending a little more to the iConnect since it offers full uPnP support while the POGOPLUG doesn't. Even if not needed but the wlan-n adapter is a nice extra. plus you don't need to install an extra app to mount and embed the HDDs.
Just get a sheevaplug.... :-)
I don't get the craze with the pogoplug. There are tons of NASifiers/media streaming servers out there, hell, I just plug a HDD into the DSL router of my ISP and I have a UPnP AV streaming solution. What does this the others don't?
