Hot on the heels of the recent
DSi XL appearance, rumors are swirling that
Nintendo is preparing to announce a second version of the DS --
the DS2, if you will -- at E3 in June. Over on
RPad they're spilling the beans about the supposed device, including the fact that it'll boast two larger, higher resolutions screens, an accelerometer, and it will also supposedly run on an NVIDIA Tegra chip. Finally,
RPad is also reporting that they spoke with developers who say their games will be finished by the end of the year... leading us all to speculate the unannounced successor could, possibly, be announced at E3, then available by the end of the year. Of course, this info's all 100 percent unofficial, so take everything with a grain of salt, relax, and we'll let you know as soon as we hear something more solid.
R4DS card in three, two, one....
@LordSauron It should be R4²DS. or maybe R4DS²... IDK.
@LordSauron
ds roms are killing me now with the no train controls on zelda and constant freezing in pokemon... makes me sad.. might just actually buy the games. :(
@Skwidwerd there are fixes for that , looked for a patched version
@Skwidwerd
Or yeah, you could just buy the games. Give your support to the developer et al.
@Plothole
Nothing beats getting the real thing.
One day piracy shall be a thing of the past.
up the hardware or no buy!
I think delvelopers just finished their DSi exclusive titles. The DSi is way too young to be already kicked off the stage. Nintendo would have to be desperate if they were to do that.
@Spiky haired boy
GameBoy Advance micro. 'Nuff said. This is basically the way Nintendo has worked:
1) Introduce new model, everyone goes gaga for it, they buy it.
2) Introduce improved model, make it smaller, and add features people have said would make the original model better, or just make it prettier.
3) Introduce another model, usually with another radically new form factor, possibly add stuff that's not really needed but fun, maybe add some more stuff people have been wanting for a while as well.
With the DS, Nintendo took a 4th step and made a ginormous model, but given the types of people they've attracted with the platform (read: your grandma), that move makes sense, and gets them to double dip.
Introducing the successor to the DS doesn't really seem out of the question.
However, this leave me wondering what the hell is going to happen to Golden Sun 3, which is about the only major DS title I've been waiting for.
@ModernTenshi04
Gameboy Micro as GBM? I already have the anniversary one.. it's so cute... nintendo is very very conservative, as they can make money now, they wont go for a new hardware... NDSi doesnt seem to get that support as they simply cant ignore the huge NDS/NDSL base.
@ModernTenshi04
great... Now I gotta start thinking about what to do with my NDSi.
@ModernTenshi04
Gameboy Micro + Flash cart = Best console ever.
@htd: YES
I've been looking for a 20th Anniversary GBM and a flash cart for some time now. It's just so perfect...
What Nintendo needs is a multi-touch interface, and this could be the platform for it. The only reason that Nintendo needs to add a stylus is to make more money on people losing them.
@Orwhaleca Yeah improve the touch screen. If u ask me iPhone and itouch have the best touch screens
Developers who said their games would be finished by the end of the year? Um, without more details how meaningless. "No, we aren't finishing any games this year." Perhaps, a blockbuster title being finished and I'll add a tiny bit of weight. Still, I'm taking bets against it, techblogs wanting to get some webhits, throwing things against the wall.
I have no idea what you're trying to say
@juanvaldez
i'm sure this gentleman here can count to potato
I reckon Nintendo will keep the current DS Game Cartridge slot on the next itteration of the DS, despite it's push for DLC, so it can use a similar marketing strategy that Apple has used for the iPad and state that the next DS will have a back catalogue of thousands of games from day one of it's release.
@rysle you mean like how the Gameboy Color played original Gameboy games? Or how the Gameboy Advance would play Gameboy Color games? Or how the DS would play Gameboy Advance games?
Similar strategy to the iPad... Nintendo's been doing this for YEARS.
@jeffrotull actually, the orginal GBA(I'm not to sure about the SP) could go all the way back to original Game Boy.
@rysle
jethrotull (who is awesome, the musician I mean, well I never know) and Firehazel have a point, Nintendo had already done what you "suggested", being able to play a back catalogue of games. They certainly weren't the first (at least with their portables) to do this, not that it actually matters who was first. Thus, there was no real need bring Apple into your comment, it was a rather pointless and not well thought out reply, inviting a flame war, which lcuky hasn't happened (yes, I know this reply is no better).
Anway, you seem fairly intelligent, or a least sensible, so I won't berate you, just say a little extra research wouldn't go amiss. Apple isn't be all and end all.
@Tams
I completely agree with what you are saying, but I mean in terms of marketing. I'm not aware that Nintendo ever really flouted the fact that the latest incarnations of their Gameboy and DS line of products could play previous generations games in there advertising, where with Apple there biggest selling point for the iPad, apart from it being magical (and revolutionary at an unbelievable price), is that it has a huge 150,000 ap catalog available from day 1.
@Firehazel The SP played all GBA games (obviously) and Game Boy Color games, but did not play original Game Boy games. This seems to have become a Nintendo handheld tradition: I call it one-generation backward compatibility. The original DS played all DS and GBA games, but no Game Boy or Game Boy Color games, and the DSi plays all DSi and DS games. Of course, since there are only about 6 DSi games as I type this (and I am guessing at that number), it's not so much of a tradition any more, I guess.
Bout. Freakin. Time.
@Nitesh Agreed. I've had my DSLite for a while now, I've been aching for a boost in hardware, I really hope that the Tegra thing is true. If the DS2 can output graphics equal to or better than my PSP, count me in.
@superaj If it used Tegra 2, it would blow the PSP right out of the water hardware-wise.
@Nitesh I think I just peed a little.
@superaj Let me make you pee a little more. Instead of the ARM9 at 67MHz and a ARM7 at 33, you would have the Tegra 2 which houses two Cortex A9 cores, which can supposedly ramp up to 2GHz. The increase over the first DS would be like comparing a PS1 to the most fully decked out gaming PC out now.
@Nitesh I knew Tegra 2 was supposed to be awesome, but that sounds incredible...I just hope it's true, and that I'll be able to buy one this year.
@Nitesh
I hope they DO go for Tegra 2 as opposed to the first. One can dream.
They need to have a DS cartridge slot if they want it to succeed.
@sapient2k7
Knowing from Nintendo, there will always be backwards compatibility
Whatever happened to GameBoy?
Didn't nintendo say when they released the DS originally that the GameBoy would still live on and DS was like a side project?
@DmitryNYC That changes when you sell 100 million units of a new device.
@DmitryNYC
I'm starting to think that was just Nintendo saving face for all the gamers out there. Looking at things now, calling it the GameBoy DS would have likely turned off new gamers to the system (people know what GameBoy was, and might already have registered opinions about it), and given it's been known as the DS since 2004, so nearly 6 years, that would be a lot of backtracking and potentially confusing to the casual market if they were to suddenly name the successor with the GameBoy branding. Sounds stupid, I know, but things are like that.
A guy at Best Buy told me that people seemed to be buying Blu-ray players more than HD-DVD simply because Blu-ray:
1) Sounded more futuristic.
2) Was a term they had never heard before, so they were genuinely curious about it.
Sadly, I think the days of the GameBoy are done, but then again, I didn't see anyone getting upset when Nintendo stopped using "Nintendo" as the primary namesake of their consoles.
@DmitryNYC
Seriously... i've been waiting for the next gen Gameboy. :(
Already?
Wow... no buyers remorse for DSIXLSUPER owners at all....
surprised no one said "OMG IT SHULD RUN ANDROID" lol
the only thing more predictable than Nintendo itself are their fans, who'll snap these up without thinking twice. lol...
@carg0 I know I will! OWWW OWWwww! ...too much?
@carg0
yeah, because it'll actually be affordable. i'm pretty sure there are everyday consumers who will snatch this up without even thinking once.
I high doubt they would canabalize the DSi with a new DS this early in its lifespan. It would be a very stupid move considering the DS is still selling really well. If they were going to announce a new portable, it would probably be next year for 2012.
@Dagreenman18 The new DS might be more expensive. Besides, the DSi isn't really anything special and Nintendo is having their lunch eaten by Mobile Phones.
Gee thanks for giving me credit for the tip.
/end sarcasm.
a wasted opportunity to re-use this classic image http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/17/third-party-studio-offers-more-confirmation-of-motion-sensing-ni/
The new DS will be a phone.
@MarkB Please no.
@MarkB
i suppose you like paying a monthly contract for a games console, because i don't.
Right now I'm wondering if they'll try and hop back in with Sony/Microsoft/Sega- Well, maybe not Sega... But will they remain aimed at a wider audience that spends less money, or go for a much slimmer but higher paying crowd? I think it's the former, simply because they can make more money that way.
But with the 'DS2', I wonder if it'll so much more powerful than the DS, and if so, will that mean a change in games (as far as genre goes), or will they try and retain their current audience?
Will Sony/Microsoft jump into the ring with something new? Time shall tell.
