Samsung confirms slate PC in the works
Well, the details are extremely thin here folks, but it looks like Samsung's working on a tablet PC -- or 'slate' if you're into the new fangled lingo -- just like pretty much every other manufacturer on the planet. Speaking with APC (the website, not the clothier), Philip Newton, director of Samsung Australia's IT division, said that the company is working on a slate PC for the second half of 2010 that will have "PC-grade processing power and connectivity" -- two things Newton had previously cited as the main things lacking in the iPad. That's really all there is to go on -- no specs or features mentioned, though Samsung has been vaguely hinting that the tablet, when it appears, will run on Intel's Atom platform, which sounds about right. We'll have to wait and see, won't we?

Nice, knew it wouldnt be long before tons of these started popping up. Im already saving in expectation one worth the money is released.
Now there's innovation Apple could learn from! A thumb keyboard on the sides there -- could make some good use of their big ugly bezel. Thumb-based entry is still way better than super-cramped fake touch-typing with your iPad on your lap. That's just going to be painful.

If you're thinking about becoming a product designer, don't quit your day job. That Samsung is about as ugly a design as one could possibly imagine. You've actually enjoyed typing on that sort of a split keyboard? No doubt it can be mastered with enough practice, but damn, that design is as rare as hen's teeth because most users would hate it. That dude's thumb would press three keys at once. That Samsung tablet looks like a BlackBerry reject that was designed by a committee of five drunken monkeys. I'm telling you now that no ordinary consumer in their right mind would touch that hideous thing. I'm sure it's fine for a FedEx or UPS guy but even that's pushing it.
Ecosystem = closed system. It will only prevail so long before open platforms dominate.
@unwired
agreed but allot of work needs to be done to make opens ourced devices compliant with mainstreamed apps. Take the pandora hand held for instance. Awesome device , well priced, Linux scares people away as does the idea of needing to write their own software. Once we make open sourced devices more hand holding , they will do better. The key here is developers being willing to release their work (and put in enough work to make them bug free) for free.
@unwired
Open platforms are not new (Linux) and are fare from being dominant.
Contrary to what you think, "open" is not the next Big Thing because MOST consumers do not even know what it means.
But open platforms are complex (as a platform) and fragmented BECAUSE of the freedom. And this is not a good thing for MOST consumers.
@unwired
As an example, look at the mess concerning compatibility between different Android versions and existing smart phones. It will soon become a nightmare for developers.

Sadly Apple App Store and Android Market are SO opposite its crazy.
Apple rules their store with an iron fist and denies at will...but they also do quality control..and lately have even started removing useless apps.
Android Market is completely open...meaning no control at all. While they claim there are 30,000 apps I have only found about 20 useful ones. They are mostly spam, scams, and adware...the apps from real devs tend to get lost in the clutter of spam, scams, and adware.
I love my droid, but something has to change about the market and soon.
Someone PhotoShopped "Samsung" onto a Franklin Translator/Dictionary, right? Albeit, not a pocket one, unless you're a Kangaroo.
is it really running windows XP??? Could it get any worse?
what does it mean pc grade processing power and connectivity that the iPad lacks....if it's an atom it won't be any more powerful...and having windows means it will be a LOT more bloated so it will run slower and not be finger friendly at ALL. As for connectivity....iPad has Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11 b/g/n...will this thing have an ethernet port or something? I hope not..that would be useless. Where is this guy coming up with this BS?
I just don't get it. All these companies have long known about the rumoured Apple Tablet and had Windows 7 RC since June 2008. Why is this taking so goddamn long?! These should all be out by now, well before Apple gets a huge slice of the consumer pie. Such laziness in R&D. It's their own fault they're not market leaders.
