Sky TV buys 15,000 3DTVs from LG for live sports broadcasts in public venues
LG is today proudly boasting that it has sealed the biggest sale of 3D television sets so far, thanks to its partnership with UK broadcaster BSkyB. Following a surprisingly successful trial run of broadcasting the Arsenal versus Man United match in 3D this January, Sky clearly sees its future through polarizing glasses and has ordered up the big batch of tubes so that it can provide weekly 3D broadcasts of Premier League games. The plan is for a rapid rollout this spring -- which is right about now -- meaning that your local pub should be getting all glitzed up just in time for the end of season excitement. It remains to be seen whether Brits will swarm to the new tech or lose interest once the novelty wears off, but judging from the size of this investment, it would seem the bigwigs in charge of our entertainment are already convinced that 3D will be a win.

Engadget you invented the WEB3D!
If I cross my eyes all comes to life!
@mex
The blur will magically disappear when ur drunk enuf!
@mex
Holy crap! Their moving fast, its all a blur to me.
Not too long before bunch of lunatics wearing wacky 3d glasses in a crowded bar.
@larciel
Not only that, but you'll have to ask the waiter for a pair if you want to check out what's on! Otherwise it'll be a big blurry mess on the rectangles!
Life's Good!
Looking at that photo, I can't help but think that Beckham must be crying a river right now that he can't play in the first 3D televised Soccer WC... Feel pretty sorry for him. The dude won't be able to showcase his magnificent 3D footwork in front of the entire world.
@onlymyrailgun I'd say it was a pretty common misconception in the US that Beckham is good player. He's not really; not by European standards anyway.
On a more on topic note, it's good see Sky doing something for the good of everyone. It's not often big companies do that.
A couple of weeks ago the landlord in my local said he is getting one of these. I can't wait to try it, pretty sure the novelty will wear off though.
way to keep up with the times there chaps - just how old is that photo?
@Beamo Tuncay, Alves? Boro? WTF? LOL.
Gaming will push 3D TV sales more than sports and movies.
Why? Well, any film or tv programme relies on what the cameraman decides to put into focus, irrespective of wether you're looking at something else on the screen.
A 3D game can have even less depth blurring, than say, what CoD MW 1 & 2 have, and nex to no anti-aliasing, because when your own eyes determine what is in focus, they will always be more realistic and natural.
@BergerFan With 3D games, everything is still the same distance from your eyes even though they appear nearer or futher away, so you're always focusing on the same point. Stuff in the background won't go out of focus when you look at things in the foreground.
@jamesots I think you've failed to grasp how stereoscopic 3D actually works.
With stero 3D, you get two viewpoints - one for each eye, determinded by the glasses, which are natural eye width apart.
Hold a finger about a foot in front of your face and focus on that(like. Gun sight). Notice how everything else is blurred naturally? Now keep your hand where it is, and focus on something way beyond it. Now your hand should be blurred. This same effect, affects *everything* in your field of view.
@jamesots
even tho' the actual image of both fore- and background objects are at the same distance from you, your eyes will "zoom in" on the background object as if it was actually further away
it's kinda like when looking at a mirror, where your eyes are zooming in twice as far as the mirror is, because the image is behind it
in the same sense the image is behind the 3d screen
@BergerFan
Dude you just stated exactly what I've been trying to tell people! 3D movies is f'n stoopid. They only images that can be put up are those that are artificially made with no perspective blur. Therefore, the only movies worth watching in 3D are animated movies. Think about how this perspective issue will affect viewing a movie made for 3D on a traditional 2D display. There's tons of post processing needed to convert it to 2D in order to add perspective blur, otherwise everything will have a real FAKE look to it in 2D.
@BergerFan and @mrqs, see http://jamesots.com/3dtv.html
Notice how with the case of a mirror, your eyes are focusing at a different distance, while with the TV and 3D TV, your eyes are focusing on the same distance, but are looking in different directions, which is what gives the 3D effect.
If it requires me to wear anything. The hell with 3d TV.
@cdf74dc9 Absolutely, because no-one wears glasses to see.
@Vanillacide
If it ends up just being a tenner extra like SkyHD you betcha it'll be popular. I saw that ad at Alice's screening too, it did indeed look very very impressive.
I'm waiting for the PS3 to get that rumoured 3D firmware update before upgrading tv sets to 3D. Wearing 3D glasses is a non-issue as you quickly forget it's there. And I've never even worn optical glasses.
LG? bahahaha. The worst possible decision.
Just testament to the state of the UK and to some extent the entire EU right now.
Should have gone Sony or Panasonic.
@guideXD
sure because sony or panasonic have polarised screens suitable for distributing to pubs around the UK (where the use of active shutter glasses wouldn't work due to losses/breakages of glasses).
Can't wait to try this. Watching united destroying liverpool would be amazing in 3d
@peeg Manchester United need to worry about beating Liverpool in 2D since they haven't done it for 1 and a half seasons now..
Man, I forgot my 3D glasses today.
incredible! 15,000 tv's at $3000 ea! no wonder sky is raising its prices
pip pip. cheerio.
they're doing all this for the world cup.
Teens on the streets are wearing 3D glasses just to look cool.
It had to happen...
