Verizon posts Android 2.1 upgrade details for Droid
Chatter over the Milestone's impending Android 2.1 update has reached a rolling boil in recent days, but it's actually the Milestone's American cousin that's getting the official coverage today. That's right: Verizon's just posted details on the Droid's upgrade to Google's latest and greatest cut, and you've got the expected host of goodies including the new 3D Gallery app, voice-to-text, news and weather widgets, pinch-to-zoom support, "improved" pattern lock, and -- get this -- live wallpapers, something we'd originally thought Motorola might leave out. It appears to lack the Nexus One's 3D app launcher (which we'd expected), but it's still pure gold for owners. Let us know when you've gotten it, eh?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Leaked documentation indicates we'll see this start to get rolled out in batches of 250,000 at a time starting on Thursday -- not too long of a wait (unless you're in the very last batch, that is).

@bb09
The Moto Droid is the better phone. Keep in mind that, with contract, this is a several thousand dollar purchase. A few bucks difference doesn't make getting second-best worthwhile.
@zakany Good point, thanks
@xFenixKnightx I only want one. Since I am an existing customer upgrading, I get $100 in upgrade credit @Verizon, so the 199 droid becomes 100 and the 80 eris becomes free. Thanks for the info on your vids. I will check them out!
@bb09 sorry but it is 200 for you with the mail in. For upgrading customers it is 300 minus mail in. If you want it for 100 you are going to need to go to best buy. I just got one last week. The only reason to get one at verizon is the buy one get one free deal.
I've been running ese53 for a few weeks now with ultimatedroid, and it's awesome. Besides the "new" features, it runs so much faster, mine runs faster at 1 ghz than it did with droid mod at 1.2 ghz.
I'm assuming that VZW hasn't bothered to update their screenshots of the update process as their images still say version 2.0.1 on them.
Finally Yahoo Mail support.
Anyone else getting the update? I'm not getting nothing at all..... :(
@dannyyang524
Thursday
@dannyyang524
NO, if you are Not getting Nothing, then u are saying you are getting something (double negative). So .... whatcha gettin? Besides bored/disappointed... lol
How do we know when it comes out? I checked my system updates and my system is currently up to date.
I had an omnia and bought a droid outright. No fees now change on my contract just had to activate the droid. DROID does.
So it's Thursday now? I guess I can stop repeatedly checking my phone for updates...
I find it amazing that iPhone users follow like flocks of sheeps (thag means you sheepie) to the iPhone alter of conformity. I choose a droid because I watched 2 of my co-workers with i0hones with a huge crack across their screens. One of them this was the third time it happened. I know the iPone is as simple as can be bt I like the android os customization. I look foward to upgrades and adding features. I was happy when I got the droid. I am even happier when I get some new toys to play with when an upgrade rolls out. The droid's screen is light years ahead of the iPhone's. The camera is night and day and above all else At&t network just can't hold a candle to Verizon's. Choose your phone but I have seen what both can do and each has its strengths but the Droid just stacks up better than what Apple and At&t have to offer.
Man am I tired of hearing the ill informed whine about the launcher.Goto the market and download the Helix launcher. It is the same launcher actually better! You don't have too wait for the OTA ,get that launcher today and see for yourself, spread the good word people....Droooiiidd!!
Does anyone know if there'll be 5 homescreens?
@Googleowns
It should because it's the same software seen on the Nexus One.
@Googleowns I would bet money that it's 3. The modding community has been running ESE53 for a few weeks now, and had to hack in 5 homescreens.
@Googleowns
Download Home++ from the market (works in 2.0.1). Never look back.
Jajaja and I just rooted my phone yesterday and runnig a 2.1 Luncher that does most of those things, except the maps upgrades.
I guess I'm gonna have to get my phone back to normal since this update should be coming soon.
any word on the ERIS??? Been patiently waiting...
Yeah, Danny Darko said it. Get the HelixLauncher app from the marketplace. It gets you 7 screens, a new launcher button that also lets you have 4 more app shortcuts at the bottom with the button and it also lets you switch to landscape mode WITHOUT sliding out the keyboard. Oh, the app is FREE.
@superbalde
Is it stable? I tried Home++ and one other desktop app and, not only were they glitchy, but they made my phone buggy as hell when I uninstalled them.
Really stable. It does fc the first time its installed but after that it never does it again
Any chance we'll get the .zip downloadable here early, like before?
I really just want more home screens. The live wallpapers are nice and I'm definitely a fan of the free yahoo mail support but i want screens. And the new app drawer... oh well
No extra screens? :( I totally don't care about live wallpapers, all they're going to do is run the battery down more. I know there are homepage custom apps that can add extra screens, but they're all glitchy.
Looking forward to smoked glass running on 2.1 kernel. :)
Now what are the Droid owners going to bitch about?
Does anyone know if this will add Exchange GAL support?
So much for Android fragmentation eh?
In the coming months, it looks like a lot of phones are getting planned 2.1 upgrades.
Too bad 90% of the Droid users, including myself, are rooted and already enjoying ESE53.
ok so i own a droid but i also purchased an unlocked milestone and it hasnt been upgraded to 2.1 either. what is the deal here. I dont see the update coming anytime soon. so i have 2 phones both motorola and NO 2.1 on either
