We couldn't shake the feeling that the mysterious Samsung-branded Windows Phone 7 Series device being
passed around at
MIX10 this week was just a warmed-over
i8910 HD, and it turns out there's a very good reason for that: Samsung says it
is a warmed-over i8910 HD. Even crazier,
TechRadar writes that its contact at Samsung basically pegged the stunt entirely on Microsoft, simply saying "they used the i8910 HD to demo Windows 7" and that "this demo was a one-off." The whole thing reeks of the original Zune, which began life as a Frankenstein'd Toshiba Gigabeat -- but we don't think this new trick is going to make it all the way to retail since the i8910 HD clocks in with 640 x 360 resolution (WP7S requires 800 x 480) and a processor that falls well short of the standard-issue 1GHz Snapdragon. At any rate, we're trying to get the straight dope on this from Microsoft now that Samsung's washed its hands of it and we'll update you when we've got more.
They should have demoed a painted HD2... Just to rub it in. LOL
It seriously will just be a matter of days from the first WP7 dump to it running on the HD2n and apparently the i8910 HD.
@theclerk74
lol that is cool blood so many tears
My beef: the hardware design of the showcased Samsung and LG models don't match the straight-lined Metro UI that Windows has going, which is why neither phone meshes hardware and software very well in my mind. For comparison, look at how Apple and Palm hardware designs mirror their rounded-edge UI theme. Similarly, the Asus brick design compliments the sharp-cornered, bold Metro aesthetic nicely, as would a ZuneHD-ish design. Hopefully the hardware manufacturers start understanding this sooner rather than later.
Funny thing is, with the latest custom firmwares the original 8910 seems to be able to do much more than WPS7:
-multitasking (someone managed to run over 50 apps simultaneously)
-copy & paste everywhere
-install any app you want
-browser supports flash
-lots of customization options
Plus its very fast, plays all videos up to 720p smoothly and has a very good camera...
I've had it for a few months and if it wasn't for my craving for an Android handset (Milestone) I'd never have parted with it.
Also, the phones are identical, even the screen is the same, it just looks smaller on the WPS7 prototype because of the UI, look closer (or calibrate your monitors :P)
I"m wondering what that Apple HATER Lay has to say about WinMo 7 Series not having cut, copy, and paste...
God what a massive fail on MS part.
That is why I will not be switching from my iPhone anytime soon. Unless Palm surprises me with a mega awesome webOS phone. Plus I need reassurances that Palm will still be around in a year or so to provide support.
Either way this is sad news for people who were interested in WinMo 7S.
It had such potential and it really does look good. But come on that might have flown when the iPhone DID NOT have copy and paste but now that it does it's kinda ridiculous to not have it.
@TheLondonExchange
You're like the second Apple troll idiot that asked that. Am I like messing with your mind?
Try going to the original story and look at my posts on the front page, and 2nd page, and you will know.
HINT: Unlike you twit Apple users, I dont consider omission of stuff like that a "feature" that need not be there because "steve" said it wasn't necessary.
@LAY
Uhh is that response?
sorry but I'm not gonna go digging thru 300+ posts just to find yours.
To make things simple you could have I dunno just copied and pasted your earlier response.
And for the record I honestly don't think it's a huge feature. I personally don't use it that much on my iPhone and I didn't miss it when I didn't have it.
However now that the iPhone does have it (along with webOS and even shitty Nokia phones) then I see no way to justify this occuring on MS brand new OS.
Again you prove that you're just an Apple Hater.
@TheLondonExchange
you mean the shitty nokia phones that own the vast majority of global market share?
@TheLondonExchange
"Uhh is that response?"
??? Once more in English.
"sorry but I'm not gonna go digging thru 300+ posts just to find yours."
IT'S ON THE FIRST PAGE! CANT YOU READ???
"To make things simple you could have I dunno just copied and pasted your earlier response."
You asked what I thought. I told you where to look. It isn't my job to hand-hold you through your trolling experience.
@SteveyAyo
oh you mean the rest of world that is mainly lowly 3rd world countries with 3rd world citizens...
yeah I'm really dying of jealously over here that Nokia has that market cornered...
/sarcasm
Okay lets get back to the main topic.
@TheLondonExchange you absolutely epitomize the pretentious jackass Apple consumer that led to the im a mac ads... if it isnt shiny, trendy or what steve jobs tells you is cool it must be beneath you right? get over yourself
@SteveyAyo
Please bitch.
I own a PC, an xbox 360, a Wii, and an iPhone. I'm not beholden to any one single company.
I happen to like Apple products and Apple...big whoop. I also like Palm, MS, and to a certain extent Google.
How about you get over yourself. Just cuz I don't settle for mediocrity doesn't mean I'm some evil person. I'm not gonna apologize for not caring about the 3rd world countries that nokia happens to dominate because
1) they don't matter
2) they don't care what's good and what's not good. they're just grateful to even have basic necessities....
@TheLondonExchange interesting because... its NOT just third world countries they dominate, which im really not sure why you hate third world countries so much, and while yes the s60 os blows their hardware is outstanding. Granted they dont market their products to death creating a legion of clones spouting hatred for the lesser people of the earth (you) but damn do they consistently generate sales in ALL "worlds"
@LAY
Out of curiosity, do you have a job or a social life? All you do is post 5 paragraph flamebait comments on engadget around the clock about everything barely-Apple-related.
Do you have Steve Jobs or Daddy issues? You sound like a very broken individual.
@SteveyAyo
Just for some reality check. The iPhone and iTunes are by far the most used products - by consumers in their respective categories. Every metric says iPhones users download more apps, access the web more frequently and use more multi media features than any other mobile platform by a very huge margin. Tells me the data clearly indicates that iPhone users like to use their device to do more things than the competition.
The problem is that people talk about all the iPhone limitations. Yet it is the iPhone that had had a disproportionate impact on mobile data and app usage in the industry. If it's about people buying and using their phone, then who beats the iPhone? No one.
If apple fans were ready to buy anything Apple, then how come the Apple TV doesn't sell as well as iPods and macs and iPhones?
If iPhones are so bad, then why do they have such high usage? If the competition is so great then why is their data service usage so low?
Same applies to iTunes. It's the worst software yet has by far the most usage....
In a capitalist world people vote with their wallets. And companies cater to customer needs.
either they swapped out the screen or they just let the KIRFers know that WP7 will scale to any resolution...
@SecretlyFat I was wondering that! Aren't the "official" resolutions WVGA and HVGA?
So... winpho7 was running that smoothly on a lesser device (and im assuming it was actually running o that device) i CANNOT wait for the hardware that actually meets the requirements... winpho ftw?
Would it be that far fetched for Samsung to just update the omnia hd's specs to fit wp7s?
No effort, Samsung!
I wish microsoft would ditch the IE logo and just put the word internet on a block
The windows 7 home screen is one of the least attractive I have ever seen. Looks and seems awkward. Is that what all the positive buzz is about? Seems way too gimmicky.
Hm, look at those 2 side by side...WPS7WTF new home screen doesn't really look like much of a step forward...
Not surprising that a prototype would use existing hardware.
Ugh. S60 is better than windows phone seven any day.
@jgp Yeah, and you know so because yo've been usin WinPho7 for months now,¿right?
because making such statement based on half a dozen videos of beta builds running on prototype hardware, of an OS that's not to be released until christmas holidays, that would be silly. ¿wouldn't it?
don't get me wrong. I've loved all my S60 phones. Even my current i8910. But even Nokia thinks is outdated and will be ditching s60 in favour of symbian^3 and MeeGo in their High-end phones.
S60 is still great, no argument there, but it's getting old pretty fast.
