New MacBook Pro, Air and Mac Pro pricing potentially leaked by Apple ads and online store (updated)
Could this be another example of online advertising presaging the onset of a hardware upgrade from Cupertino? Apple's ads on Australian tech pub PC Authority have been spotted displaying some rather peculiar price tags for its flagship mobile and desktop computers. Whereas Cupertino's Aussie online store lists the most affordable versions of the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Pro at A$1,599, A$1,999 and A$3,599, respectively, the above, official-looking ads would seem to disagree. Clicking on them still leads to the currently priced (and specced) machines, but looking at them suggests that -- in the absence of some major conspiracy or a splendidly random price hike -- we're getting an early peek at the pricing of the newly updated models of each of those series. The MacBook Air has jumped by A$400 so that what used to be its costliest base price is now its lowest, while the MBP has suffered a A$300 bump in cost of entry. Then again, considering the expectation that the mobile computers will get Core i7 CPUs while the Mac Pro will get all dressed up with Core i7-980X regalia, this development is perhaps not all that surprising. The major thing to take away here is that the long-awaited upgrades might finally be arriving. We're putting our piggy banks on alert, just in case.

Update: We've come across some other pricing inconsistencies contained within Apple's own New Zealand site. Find out what's happening after the break [Thanks, ScottNYC].
Update 2: The prices above have been corroborated by Apple's Australia site, which now suffers from the same schizophrenic pricing as its New Zealand compatriot. You'll find screenshot evidence after the break.
Looking at the Mac Pro page on the Apple New Zealand site, we get a small blurb indicating prices of $5599 and $7299 in NZ currency for the quad- and eight-core options, respectively. But then sliding along to the purchase page we see significantly lower prices prominently displayed. You can see in the image below that the same situation is apparent on the Australian version of the Mac Pro site as well. We're not too fresh on Apple's pricing policy in Oceania, but clearly something is afoot, as a similar inconsistency can be found with the MacBook Air prices. Starting prices of both NZ$2,499 and NZ$2,999 are being paraded in the second of our images. We could, quite easily, be looking at a good old fashioned snafu here, making an anthill out of a mountain or whatever, but we thought you'd care to know.

MAC = waste of money. For $ 4,799 i can get three CORE i7 Extreme machines with 16GB of RAM on each = over 13Gh of speed... freaking apple nerds wasting their money for a shiny desktop...
@n0ne
are you aware of the fact that apple or ATI is not going to be sending you a check for your services here defending them as a corporation against someone who just wants better for the customer?
i just don't get it, liking a company is one thing, but shooting yourself in the foot by trying to make a customer wish into a corporate war is just overboard. would you have a certain problem if the new line of macs have a better graphics card? I for one don't like apple or ATI specifically, but it would not bother me if the customer as a whole has a better host of options to choose from.
so next time some says that they want better graphics on their next mac, pc, or whatever the hell they're running, the last thing you should be doing is trying to defend companies you dont work for; and maybe think of the amazing possibilities for gaming that it brings along.
@mynk
nuuu, i even cliked the reply button.
WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME ENGADGET.
I vaguely remember Apple doing a big increase on new products when our AUD was way down at .63¢. Seems very odd (sic!) that now we're up to near .92¢ these possible new prices do not appear to reflect the pretty massive improvement in the currency variations, even given shipping (if they come ex China via Singapore it's closer therefore should be cheaper than shipping to US) and our 10% tax.
A huge outcry would ensue should there be such a disparity re petrol (gas) prices. I think a local term is indicative, price gouging.
@monkeyman87 Let's wait for the next revision of the MacPro and the real price.
Still a pretty weak GPU.
That would be a HUGE dissapointment!!! They better not raise the prices here! I definitely not be upgrading my Macbook Pro like I expected if they do.
Overpriced iCrap!
Do you know what "compatriot" means? I think our ANZAC friends will be offended!
I mean Australian and New Zealand readers. Sorry for the "ANZAC" reference. Not sure why I wrote that.
you can keep you nice shiney apples it would greave me alot to pay such over inflated prices for under spec system i went on apple messing about i built a mac pro i think to top it out was 12000 pounds where a pc would be 4000 and thats more powerfull pc and at the end of a computer is a computer no need for stubid extras that
I call BS on this one.
If is true you wont see it for a while.
Normally you would see inflated ship times in the Apple Store for products nearing a refresh.
Currently all of these are still sitting 24 hours.
Apple's recent price models are going down, not up.
Hey, Engadget removed my comment about that fact that these are OLD prices (via macrumors)
@hulahoophugs My Dell E6400 has most of that except the magsafe ,glass trackpad and unibody construction, not that it cares me enough not to have that since it has survived an accidental drop from about 4 feet and did not even scratch.
It also came with a docking station with dual DVI (that truly makes it a desktop replacement) and a very nice suitcase all cost about 1900 USD.
Not saying all fancy stuff on Apple products are worthless but when it comes to value, Dell and PC in general triumphs
@runner50783
Value is a relativistic concept and is therefore different for everyone. I wouldn't consider a PC better value because I can't run OS X on it ( without hacking it). I believe I get better value out of buying a Mac, but that's mainly because I consider other factors rather than bare bones specs.
Value is more than just brass tax, for some Apple products are not good value, for others they are because the high prices are worth it for what you get.
A$ is not a typo folks -.- It's in Aussie Dollar so pay attention to what people are posting. Jeeze. I've went through the comments and was appalled by those that were assuming it's in US$. International prices for gadgets have always and will always be inflated compared to us lucky ones in the states.
If you think a cheap HP is better than a Macbook so be it. AND melting Magsafe is NOT common. Wtf really lol. Just because 100k people posts their horror stories on Applereallysucks.com that doesn't constitute to the millions that are satisfy with it.
I love my Windows 7 PC but for security reasons, I'll stick with my Macbook to handle my bank accounts, bills and online transactions. Heck even those "free porn sites" would be ok to stop by lol.
I gave up waiting went back to windows, got myself the opening line vaio Z its amazing , best buy has them for $1699 now :) at that prices its really decent bang for the buck with how much is in the Z.
Their computers are just too expensive. I can't imagine shelling out $2500 on something like an Air with those specs.
Not long ago I was looking into a Mac for my mother. For the same price as an entry level Macbook, I was able to pick up a Sony Vaio Z series with a 2.53 GHz Core 2, 4 GB of RAM, and a 500 GB hard drive running Windows 7 64-bit. It's a fantastic computer with tons of power and I was able to set it up to be just as simple to use as anything from Apple.
...I don't get it...and I'm too lazy to reread.
Needless to say, you can't judge a Mac vs. a PC as an apples-to-apples (no pun intended) comparison, purely on specs. If you have no idea how efficient each is, in all the various ways that may matter to someone (startup/shutdown speed, battery life, overall processor performance, number crunching, Photoshop performance, game performance, heavy software development, etc.), nor how a comparable Mac will perform once they get the newest Intel chips, you can't really look at PC with a x.xx gHz Core 2 Duo and say "see, it's better than a Mac." A lot of people get caught up in the specs and don't look at actual performance.
Regardless, that issue is moot anyway. If you need a Mac -- for iPhone development, for other Mac-specific software development, because you have mostly Mac software, because your designer friends will snicker at you if you don't, etc., or because you're a Windows refugee -- it doesn't matter how exactly they compare. Plus you can still run Windows on that Mac. If you don't want or need MacOS, there's no earthly reason why you would want to buy a Mac, unless you simply love Mac hardware (which is nice, but not worth that kind of premium to most people). There's really no other argument to be made. The rest is just fanboy fodder.
@Ikthog Oh, and if you want to run Logic or Final Cut... you need a Mac. If you want to do .Net or Silverlight development (or use lots of other development tools), or play most PC games... you need Windows. (You could, of course, buy a Mac and put Windows on it, and do all that stuff.) So again, it's not as simple as comparing specs and price.
i've never seen a macbook under $1000
people who argue over this, or believes this, are dumb. it's just an error. it's logic. Apple's MacBook & MacBook Pro's sales rose 40% these past two months. why would apple hike the prices up $500? Apple is making record profits, hardcore gaming companies are investing their time into them, because macs are taking more share in the market, then they ever have before. Apple wouldn't jeopardize that. Steve Jobs isn't as stupid as some of you think. he knows what he's doing. Cheaper prices=sells more macs. There could even be a price drop.
Why don't they release these laptops?
I will buy one the first day they do, but they are just teasing me now.
And they had better be worth the wait. Something like a 15" MacBook Air, 250GB SSD, 4GB Ram, multitouch screen/trackpad (and it could convert into a tablet), plus a bunch of other stuff. :)
The one good thing is that Aperture 3 has been released.
@everyone
Apple laptops are meant to be expensive. It's the difference between Lexus and Toyota. With Toyota you get a basic car (900-1400 windows laptop) and either get a lot of option packages to fit to their liking (more hardrive space, more ram, bigger screen, etc) until you have the laptop you want at the price you think you should pay for it. Sounds a lot like Windows laptops to me.
But for those of us that don't mind having all of those basic options standard to begin with (Lexus) and can then choose from there if we really want to... then we chose Apple laptops. Do you know which laptops from Apple are sold the most? The ones that are not customized online. People like the laptops as they are, they like how easy it is to buy it use it fix it whatever. It's sleek and it's standard.
Make the Macbooks more expensive to make more people buy the iPad?
You have to consider how long this stuff will last for a normal person. I have a three year old MacBook, the first generation, and it still runs like new. I also have a one year old PC with a Core2Quad 2.66 and a GEForce 8800 GT 512mb overclocked with 4gb of RAM. Guess which one runs faster...I'll give you a hint, its not the PC. And MacBook touchpads ROCK!
@Master of Random Stuff
You are doing something wrong if your old Macbook is running faster than that PC.
I threw my P.O.S. Gateway laptop againist the wall. Still works great:D
These prices of the MacBook Pro and Macbook Air were the prices before a price drop back in late October 2009 in Australia around the time of the new iMacs release. The Pro now starts at $1599 and the Air starts at $1999 in Australia.
Funny thing this...
The ads have been updated and now reflect the correct & current pricing. The starting from price on the Macbook Air homepage on Apple's website has also been updated.
Apple & their advertising agency must have heard all the hoopla and decided to update the "starting from" pricing to stop all this unnecessary commotion lol.
This was all just a false alarm where the advertising agency overlooked & or forgot to update the ads from the October 21st, 2009 price adjustment... No one cared or noticed till now, it's only come to light because of our eager anticipation for the Arrandale refresh... I still don't think we're going to be seeing anything till WWDC '10 unfortunately :(
i think this whole mac vs pc thing is bullshit i have an hp dv6 and i gotta the construction isshit every now and then i start up and it takes half an hour but im not downing pc cuz in ever mac pc fight ive been pc standing up for the ppl who dont have the best advertising and shit but i checked out a mac the other the MBP and its not half bad it can run mw2 and the auluminum body is sturdy and wud be great so im considering having a pc and a mac not to take one side or the other on this subject of course and everyone whos downing one side or the other like rly why does it matter if jeffrey got a mac or suzy got a pc there just comps and ppl r just ppl
