PlayStation Move ad pulls no motion-controlled punches against Wii, Project Natal
Sony's VP of Realistic Movements Kevin Butler (boy, does that guy have a large business card) is at it again, this time in a video ad for the PlayStation Move. He's back from the future to thank us all for the success of the motion control device, and make a few jabs towards Nintendo and Microsoft for their efforts. Here's a few choice quotes.
- "Because real boxers don't hit like this [flails arms exasperatingly]"
- "It's also got what we in the future call buttons, which turn out to be pretty important to those handful of millions of people who enjoy playing shooters, platformers, well, anything that doesn't involve catching a big red ball."
- "C'mon, who wants to pretend their hand is a gun. What is this, third grade? Pew, pew, pew."

This is an awful awful advert.
@pdotg just cant take the truth, can you??
there ads are funny and great now instead of awesome music but confusing, i think they used someone from apple's marketing team
@pdotg
I agree, that was a very desperate, desperate ad. Come on Sony, you are better than that.
@pdotg:
Does it make you feel cool to abbreviate advertisement like that?
@pdotg
Really? I found it quite entertaining, and it made me consider the possibility that the Playstation Move might not be a complete waste of time. So I'd say it was a pretty effective advert.
@Butler
These commercials are hilarious, you can't deny that. Even if you are a fanboy they're still funny.
I am still excited for Natal though and reviews before I make any purchases on some next gen junk for my PS3 or Xbox.
@Techno1q It was a joke like all their commercials.
@pdotg
i think you are stupid.
This new ad campaign by sony is remarkable, it's one of the few set of ads that i actually enjoy when i see them on TV.
They went from creepy, disturbing and weird to amazingly funny, informative and effective.
im telling you, they keep this up, and i might just buy a PS3
@manofchao5 I agree fully with you, I have an Xbox 360 but PS3 makes much better commercials. What I really don't appreciate though is the low blow they made toward project natal. Also, they really haven't really made something extremely exciting, its just a refined wiimote with a shiny ball on top. I know that natal wouldn't be good for shooters but I wouldn't end up using the move for shooters either, the standard controller is by far the best way to play.
@cwalters74 Oh man you can say what you like but that was funny, and idk how well its going to do but i like that they are trying to play real games with it not well you know what i'm talking about.
@Kelsomatic
with natal you could still use the controller AND have movement controls though.
what i imagine with shooters you could play with a controller normally and say when you move your head around slightly it could move your view to look up or down with out moving where you're aiming.
@b3nj4m1n
Exactly. Just because you don't have to use buttons with Natal doesn't mean you can't.
All depends on what the devs do with it.
@BrianH
Agreed.
I don't own a PS3. No real plans to for quite some time - my 360 keeps me happy in small groups, my Wii in large groups (and really no other time.)
But these ads are fantastic. Sony went from the worst ads to the best overnight with these. They just work and work well.
@pdotg Agreed, I don't own ANY console and I thought this commercial sucked.
@Astounding Thats because you suck.
@BrianH they already sold me. i just have to actually come up with the money.
@pdotg
I own the PS3, 60GB, and I love the machine. I love most of the Kevin Butler / PS3 commercials. This one however, sounded drawn out and tiresome. It wasn't funny, not the same way the other commercials were. It seemed his heart wasn't in it to the same level.
Anyway, too bad, because I'll probably get the move. I've been waiting 2 or more years now.
@Kelsomatic Keyboard and mouse > Controller > Remote waving
@nowhereman Actually, it's because I'm not a newb.
PC is the only serious platform for competitive online gaming.
@Craig Up until i seen that advert i thought the PSMove looked like a useless piece o kit and this is coming from an xbox owner looking forward to Natal, i loved his dig at it btw.. great ad sony
@cwalters74 Agreed. This commercial is a little lengthy, but I imagine there will be shorter versions. I'm excited for all this new technology and will certainly enjoy all of them for their own individual strengths.
@Ordeith2 Only problem - the Xbox controller is not designed to be held in one hand. Having to hold it with both and, say, point with both at the same time is going to be awkward, so any games which would benefit from a pointing interface are going to be limited to no-controller input, or back to the old analog sticks and no Natal. Of course they could produce a new nunchuck and/or remote-like controller for Natal, but they've made no mention of it, and that would add to the cost and kill their whole marketing position with this thing. Also, regarding moving your head to change your view in a game... that isn't going to work. I think you might want to be looking at your TV the whole time, not out the window.
Which isn't to say that cool things couldn't be done with Natal. Given the technology, I'm sure some developers are going to come up with unique and fun ways to use it. However, I suspect for the most part it's all going to be controller-less stuff, as that is the approach Microsoft is pushing for, and probably that's the best approach given what it's strengths are.
@Kelsomatic
The Move looks like it gives more of a mouse precision on a shooter. I love games like COD4 on my PS3 and now Bad Company 2 on my XBox, but I still prefer my mouse and keyboard for shooters on my PC.
its not advert.
its ad.
@b3nj4m1n
what...
that defeats the entire idea of using natal if youre using the controller....
I dislike natal anyway, eyetoy (which it basically is) was amusing, but you cant play many good games on them, for exactly the reason in the advert, going pew pew with your hand isnt very good in ANY way...
@crunc
surely you can move your head around and still read this comment at the same time. there's plenty of room to move your head without even straining your eyes. anyway it's just one idea how you could quickly check out your surroundings.
@HoldenMccrotch
i disagree, like Ordeith2 said, just because you don't HAVE to use a controller doesn't mean you CAN'T
@Astounding
MAME cocktail is the only real platform for competitive Fiday nite pizza parlor Galaga.
@manofchao5
well, the apple commercial team isnt really "new thinking" enough, they've done the same add for ages now -.-
@manofchao5 Perhaps there's some truth to what this guy is portraying at 0:50 1:15 mark, but still, I will zip my mouth for the moment, until the natal arrives on the holiday. Latest: http://bit.ly/project-natal-opinions-unveiled
Playstation FTW!!!!!!!
Nice.
@zangetsu2 If you like playing with a dildo in your hands...
@pedmart No, no, you got it all wrong, that honor goes to the WiiMote and a certain Curling game...
@zangetsu2 actually, not really... honestly i think the move looks really good, but bias commercials like this will kill it. its like mac ads. and also the jokes he said werent actually funny.... when i watched this i stayed straight faced without even trying..
HILARIOUS! Fav one so far lol, Kevin Butler's got some jokes
@CaptainPlanet I like the new GOW3 one, pshh who needs girls when ive got gadgets
@CaptainPlanet
The Kevin Butler ad campaign by Sony is great, and this commercial made me lol.
They HAVE to get this guy at the E3. Kevin Butler should host Sony's whole event :)
@hemmy awesome idea! hope sony sees this lol
@CaptainPlanet
Funny spot, but I didn't get the jabs? I have a Wii and didn't catch any jokes aimed at it and admittedly, I don't know a lot about Natal to catch those jabs either. I applaud the efforts, but the globe is just too dumb for me so I'll be sticking with my controller.
Sony, call me when you redesign the remote to *not* have a dorky glowing ball at the end of it.
Yeah, they came at you Nintendo! What you gonna do bout' it....
@SolidSnake they will once again comment that wii hd isnt needed yet
@SolidSnake release Other M and Galaxy 2
...oh wait
Sin & Punishment 2 looks good though...
@SolidSnake
Make bajillions of dollars regardless of who copies them?
@NaeemTHM Popular pseudo number for a popular pseudo "next-gen console"
HA! :D
Wow, the gloves are off!
@reallynotnick "It get's pretty messy"
That's what she said :)
@Bowsa oh and I'll her RIP HER SPACE-TIME CONTINUUM
@reallynotnick
Natal= Birth (Xbox=???)
Wii= Small or small child showing excitement
Move= Be active (Playstation= a place to play)
Why is Sony the only company smart enough to name things what they are?
@swaggtech Actually it's
Natal = birth
Wii = what small children and puppy's do on the floor when they can't make it to the bathroom
Move = Be active
