Shuttle's X50V2 all-in-one barebones PC gets passively cooled, passively hits online retail
When you've got an entire desktop PC inches from your eardrums, it helps if the machine is dead silent... or as close to that dream as possible. That's why we're pleased that Shuttle's new XPC X50V2 -- last spotted wearing a toga -- is now on sale with a completely fanless design for silent cooling. Since CES, the all-in-one has also gained legacy parallel and serial ports (you know, for your Zip drive) and room for up to 4GB of memory, but hasn't lost any of its dual-core Atom D510 1.66GHz goodness or its school lunchbox charm. Though we haven't heard official word about US availability, Shuttle's domestic website places the MSRP at $400, and online retailers including Newegg already show the tethered touchscreen tablet in stock.

Whats the big deal... our iMac has a fan but you can just barely hear it.
@Jacob Apple Geek
Agreed, I used to sleep right next to mine (as in: the desk it was on was 10 cm's from my head) and I often accidentally left it running at night because I totally forgot it was still turned on.
@Jacob Apple Geek
can't hear > can just barely hear
But I agree, not too impressed.
@Jacob Apple Geek Actually, it has three if its the latest one :-P

I've heard my unibody iMac ALOT when it's working on something intensive, it's actually a very annoying fan sound.

Here are somethings the iMac is not:
I can buy three X50V2 for the price of an iMac.
The X50V2 has a handle and a stand therefore it's meant to be portable, where as the iMac is not.
It can be used like a laptop while sitting on the couch or used like a LCD display looking up recipes in the kitchen or mounted on a wall as a picture display while on the charger. iMac sits on a desk.
If only this thing can output 1080p.
once i got rid of all my fans and moved to ssds, i can now hear the fan in my 24" tft. didn't even knew it has one.
silence is awesome, opens your ears to all sort of other background annoyances :)
I'm working on building a barebones passive cooled AIO with a touchscreen into a high tech briefcase. It's going to be badass.
"dual-core Atom D510 1.66GHz goodness"
Not goodness, SLOWNESS ! Why can't we have a ULV Pentium or Celeron ?
I say why not!
I would name mine "Butt Shuttle"
@Jacob Apple Geek
Who said its a big deal except you?
Shuttle is just a great brand that builds some great cases and PCs, that's all... though this is their first all-in-one I believe? The Apple comment isn't just troll-ish, its completely uncalled for here. So thanks for being "that" Apple fanboy, you deserve SO MUCH respect... Let me find some in my toilet for you...
The touchscreen plus legacy ports tell me one thing: this is intended as a point-of-sale or kiosk product.
NCR, IBM, and Fujitsu already sell POS touch-screen computers, but they're crazy expensive compared with this $400 Shuttle.
um... I don't see anybody trolling here yet.
Since Apple kind of invented the All in One desktop and got the best selling AIO with its iMac it just seems logical to compare other AIOs with it.
Me personally I would always rather get the iMac, but for people on a very tight budget who need nothing more than a websurfing typewriter this should be a nobrainer.
