Yes, Windows Phone 7 Series can make a phone call
Sure, we've been pushing Microsoft hard for Windows Phone 7 Series details like copy and paste (no) and multitasking (no), but we just realized that we've never actually seen a 7 Series device... make a phone call. A little running around later and we've got two demo handsets calling each other. We're told that the little white arrow on the call panel will eventually bring up options like conference calling, speakerphone, and mute, but it's not working yet -- and one of the phones seems to think it's running on Cingular, so either time travel is an unannounced feature of the OS or Microsoft still has some work to do. Video after the break.
P.S. They're just demo SIMs, but we're sure the poor PR folks babysitting the devices would appreciate it if you didn't call the numbers, okay? Be nice.

@yemmy Would you want few more weeks to get WP7S if it has Copy/paste, ou would you rather get it sooner and update it later with copy/paste ?
UglyStupidPhone7 ... I hope it comes with a burial plot
MS were so close to getting me to ditch my crusty old iPhone for a Win 7 phone... until they said they were not supporting multi-tasking and thought a walled garden app store was a good idea.
Oh well, I guess I'll go back to looking at Android then.
With all due respect. (And I can say whatever I way because I said 'with all due respect') I've never seen such a bunch of whiney little bitches.
@Dorf
Damn, accidently submitted too fast. :)
Isn't the actual truth about copy and paste that it is not in the current build and that it might make it out before RTM? Pretty sure I read that. I'm going to wait to pass judgement until I hear the final news about it. I actually enjoy the fact that I am getting info on this stuff way in advance... I'd hate form them to be all quiet about it until the last minute....
@Dorf TBH C/P isn't that big a deal to me. I never cared about the lack when I bought an s60v3 phone. Never cared about it when I got a v5 phone (though the feature was implemented later, i couldn't care less). 15 million people didn't care when they got the iPhone EDGE. They didn't care about MMS either. You have to truly be whiney to overlook Silverlight development, full Office support, a slew of apps with GPS capabilities (not to mention a growing and backed App Store with DivX and Netflix support), and full 3D gameplay and interactivity between computers and the 360 console via LIVE.....all because you can't copy/paste something. It's pretty asinine.
@N900 Well your kind of right... I never cared about copy and paste on the iPhone until they implemented it. Now I use it all the time and it's a great feature. If I liked the UI for the Windows 7 Phone Series not having copy and paste or not having 3rd party applications running concurrently wouldn't stop me from getting the phone.
Why you ask??? Because allowing access to the clipboard without a well thought out plan can lead to security issues, and allowing 3rd party applications to run concurrently would kill battery life and cause performance problems for the applications running on the foreground.
@dxdragon That's a well put point. People aren't really looking at this from the other side of the spectrum as to why MS didn't include it. All they do is expect and when they don't get what they expect, baww time. Check out GSMArena; the people there bitch over new phones not having 8 or 12MP camera, as they believe that all phones with 5MP camera suck (I doubt they no anything at all about cameras).
I'm not saying that clipboard functions or "real" multitasking is a small deal here, but I can't see it as the penultimate deciding factor in WP7S. There's so many good things about this OS they outweigh those 2 negatives.
just doesn't seem very user friendly or simple. plus the transitions are slow when you click on something like "people" i dont need that "cool" transition, i just need it to instantly go there.
I think they should stop leaking any more information about Windows 7 Series Phone as it will make more and more people jump on Adroid, iPhone, or even WinMo 6.5.3. They seem to have forgot the device is first a phone and making calls should have the best implementation.
Look at how small the "End Call" button is and the is placed almost on top of the screen making it uncomfortable for thump to reach.
By the time the first phone comes out HTC would have improved their TouchFlow and Sense so much that WinMo 6.5.3 will kill 7 series. Adroid, Palm, and iPhone don't even have to try.
Actually don't some of the AT&T towers still announce as Cingular? I'd figure that the name comes from the tower itself and not an internal database
@Jouva yeah they do. I have my AT&T Tilt running Android 1.6 and pretty much all of the towers around here show Cingular as the network on the lockscreen
2 pages of comments and no jokes about how the iPhone can't make calls on AT&T?
I don't know if I'm proud or disappointed.
HA Cingular.., good stuff, I remember those days!
Umm, making phone calls was actually the first thing I realized that Microsoft left out of their demo. That was my first clue that this phone was going to be a joke. And Microsoft is proving that point more and more - the option panel isn't ready yet? LOL! MSPW7S keeps bringing the hits huh?
Good lord people.. There is sill 6 months to go!! I'm sure they will add a TON of new things by then!!
@benny90 Unlike Microsoft, Apple had never developed mobile phone technology prior to the iPhone, and 6 months prior to its launch their demo was fully working. Steve Jobs was placing prank phone calls to local Starbucks directly from Google Maps 6 months before iPhone launched and that was 3 years ago.
@c4rlob So...what are you saying?
@benny90 ...in 6 months, I'll still be crap. Like all Microsoft does. But, it will be marketed like a utopian phone OS. Marketing is the only thing they're really good at.
@benny90 That's not the Microsoft way, the Microsoft way is to announce 100s of new features and slowly but surely dwindle them down to about 10 by launch time.
Good lord people... There is still 6 MONTHS to go. I'm sure plenty of things will be added between then and now!!
Getting a bit carried away on the Windows Phone 7 posts. It's starting to feel like the iPad coverage. :-p
Wow. No multitasking, no copy and paste. Microsoft really outdid itself this time. It actually went backwards to copy an OS (iPhone OS 1.0).
cool. i still want to see it receive an sms/notification though. is it obtrusive or unobtrusive?
Does anyone know if developers are able to run their own apps WITHOUT having to pay like 400 bucks for Visual Studio? It would be really really dumb if MS continued that whole thing.
@Tiptup300 The developer tools are all available for free.
Strike while the iron is hot Microsoft....
How do you do emergency numbers? And is there an easy way to access the keypad? This is one thing that a classic dumbphone/phones with keypad are "superior." On my old dumbphones, when I want to dial a number, I just start pressing the keypad and the phone will automatically register the numbers. With let's say the iPhone, I have to go the phone app first. An extra step. How about WinPho7?
lol "I will not buy a phone that can't copy and paste" What a joke. You jokers saying that now didn't have it for years with the Iphone now all of a sudden you hate anything that doesn't have it. When the Iphone came out you didn't say "It doesn't have copy and paste so I won't get it." Lets look at the real picture you guys are trying to find ways to dog on microsoft. It's the cool thing to do. Even if it doesn't have it at launch what makes you think they won't get it down the line. Personally I hate the android operating system granted I haven't actually owned one since the G1 but I've messed around with my cousins Droid and I just feel like the android OS is to cluttered. So I will take my chances on a WP7S phone... But oh god NO COPY AND PASTE!!!!11!
The lack of copy & paste originally is one of several reason I wasn't interested in the iPhone. It is a feature we Windows Mobile users have always had. Now Microsoft decides to *take it out* in Windows Phone 7? Even if the feature is eventually restored, this is still BS!!
From what I see here, the obscure interface orientation makes this an unappealing option when set up against Android and the iPhone OS. It looks more like experimental art than true usability.
There is this trmendous screen and the answer button is smaller than the point of his finger. Thats ridiculous. Will windows ever understand "Finger friendly"?
Does it have Speak N` Spell?
