SlingPlayer for Android coming this summer, demoed on video
Good news, Android fans. It looks like you'll soon have a SlingPlayer to call your own. While complete details are still pretty light, the company was showing off the app at the recent gdgt Live event in Austin, and confirmed that it will be available sometime this summer, and support streaming over both 3G and WiFi -- yes, even Friends streaming. Head on past the break for a quick demo video.

Now is it just me, or do those devices look really sexy together like that?
Thanks SlingPlayer :) My life is now that much closer to being complete.
@Rick Goodman that has to be one of the most uninformed replies ever. Do you even read this blog?
@Rick Goodman
stop trolling
@Rick Goodman My God, man. The sheer level of stupid in that comment renders me unable to come up with any insult to you that could possibly out-do it.
@Rick Goodman WTF was all that about? I didn't understand a single thing you wrote.
@Rick Goodman
Inept troll is inept.
@Rick Goodman
troll harder 1/10
@Rick Goodman
Just report him and move on...
@AlexSanchez
Check out N1's screen. How cool it looks compared to others.. especially icrap's screen.
gotta love amoled screen....
@AlexSanchez I can only see one sexy device there, since the other two have broken screens.
Oh, wait...
Now if it could just come to the pre!
@droid586
+1

@droid586 Exactly what I was thinking, +1 for you sir!!
This is good now i can take my shows to the road with my N1 thnx!
Slingplayer on a Dell Mini 5 tablet? Sign me up.
Did anyone else notice the frame lag on some of the streams? I wonder if there will be a minimum requirement for phones as far as hardware goes?
@allaun Considering most of the lag was on the Nexus One I doubt it was a hardware issue and probably more a network issue.
@donatom3 probably because it was over T-Mobile's 3G.
Finally!!!
will this work on my razr?
@nwhat
LOL
@nwhat
It should, lol.
Wow, it only took them 2 years...to code a video streaming program...tough work right there!~ People have coded entire operating systems in less time.
Hey Sling -- What about WM 6.5, Symbian S60v5, WebOS?
Maybe another 2 years?
WARNING: Do not buy Sling products. Their support is mexican and their software is garbage.
@DoctarPeppar
Completely agree!! Sling is a joke! I bought a slingbox pro HD a year or so ago, partyly because it said it fully supported Mac OS....of course, what they meant to say was Mac OS support "coming soong"...
If soon = never, then at least they were telling the truth!
The mac os client STILL does not support hd streaming, and the video quality on a mac is just disgraceful.
I will say that in bootcamp, the windows sling player works just fine, but they pretty much just flat out lied to all of the mac users.
@DoctarPeppar
there is a BB OS version, a WinMo version (untested by me) and a S60 version, oh AND a WebOS version.
@Flix C
Where are you seeing a Sling player for 'WebOS' ? I see support for there older operating system 'Palm OS'.
@Flix C I used to use the WinMo version on my Touch Diamond. Worked great.
@Flix C
Sigh..you're ignorant.
See truth below:
1.) WinMo version doesn't work properly on 6 or 6.5.
See the discussion threads on sling's forums regarding issues with full screen support and crashing \ poor video quality on newer devices like the Samsung Omnia 2 and pretty much ALL of HTC's WM devices released in 2009.
2.) The Symbian version only works on S60v3 -- not v5. Most Symbian phones released within the past 2 years run v5. The v3 version will _not_ run on v5 devices.
3.) There is NO WEBOS version. That is a flat out lie (ignorance!). They have a "palm os" version that runs on three devices -- the Treo 700p, 755p, and the Centro. Those phones have been around for years.
In case you haven't gotten the gist of it -- they haven't updated hardly any of their software in over 2 years. This company is a complete joke and they should not be allowed to sell their products if they're not going to support them.
Oh yeah almost forgot, since you mentioned BlackBerry, sling doesn't support ANY of the BB touch screen devices. How's that for support? The storm came out in november 2008!! Storm 2 came out in October of 2009.
SlingPlayer Mobile works fine on my AT&T Tilt 2 and Palm Treo Pro before it. The Tilt 2 is WM 6.5 and the Treo Pro was WM 6.1. Not everyone with WM 6.x devices is having issues with SlingPlayer Mobile.
@dwboston1
Try it on the HD2 :)
Yes, not *everyone* has issues, but the fact that there ARE issues with some devices that are not fixed is the problem.
@DoctarPeppar
what do you have against mexicans?
@Dr Spaceman
Nothing at all, except when you need product support and they barely speak english. An english company should have english speaking support...just like an Italian company should have Italian speaking support, and so on. Search for "Foamy tech support" on youtube, there's some funny videos about tech support calls to people who don't speak english.
@toptekjon
So, uh. What do you suggest a person buy instead.
@CMA
Well, I would say HAVA except they are just as bad when it comes to product support. I guess the only solution is to get a tv tuner and use ORB or some other software that can do placeshifting.
@DoctarPeppar
Hey, last week they released a WM update that works fine on 6.5. I'm using on 6.5 on my phone - it is just like the iPhone interface.
And, I've been using slingplayer on my Mac for over a year now, no problems there either.
I was wondering the other day. Do people actually use or own a slingpkayer box? I never heard about slingplayer until the aplication came out for the iPhone.
You can pretty much guarantee there will be major delays with this. Everything Sling has ever released is late, and buggy as hell.
Yeah, I'm exaggerating...but only a little.
Good news though. This was one of the last things keeping me from buying an android device.
@toptekjon
This app was the holdout for me too. With the news of the Sprint N1 yesterday, I think it's time to jump from the WinMo bandwagon.
what is Sling ?
@Flix C

I would love a Webguide for android and Windows 7 Media Center
I will get a Sling box for everyone in my family and loudly recommend it to all my friends when you bring it to WebOS. Come on Palm, you've partnered with others to bring great content to WebOS, having a Sling player APP would be a huge feather in your cap... and make it even easier to recommend the PRE or Pixi to others.
Sweet! Now bring on the high res iPad version with remote control and guide and ill be happy ;)
Considering the battery life of current smartphones, I wonder how advisable it is to watch love streaming of a tv series episode on a smartphone? 45 mins of streaming at lunch and then a dead phone for the rest of the day? No thanks! And that argument of having a spare charger at work is not really a suggestion... it's more like something you are forced to do if you want to have your cake and eat it too...
@who said what
There is a thing call a charger.
@who said what
There is something like spare batteries as well (.....well at least for non iPhones)
I'm going to go ahead and assume this is going to be for Android 1.6+ and I'll be yet another disappointed owner of an Android phone running Cupcake.
Why must Google torture me like this.
@radio2 Seriously
This really shows off the beautiful AMOLED screen of the Nexus One.
