Viv magazine iPad concept is sin city, man (video)
Want to get our attention in a hurry? Tip us on a digital magazine concept for the iPad that combines footage captured by a prototype RED Mysterium-X sensor from inside of a Frank Miller style, noir hellscape. Of course, just because it was created for the iPad doesn't mean that the concept isn't applicable to any of the hundreds (not an exaggeration) of tablet devices destined to arrive over the next year. The feature concept, created by Alexx Henry and Andrew Grant together with co-directors Cory Strassburger and Ming Hsiung, redefines the art of infotainment. And make no mistake: as mainstream media fights for eyeballs this is blood for blood and by the gallon. These are the old days, the bad days, the all-or-nothing days. They're back. There's no choice left. And publishers are ready for war. See the video (and making of) after the break.
Update: While the making-of video says the footage was shot using a "RED Epic M-X Sensor" a screen grab of the actual camera shows that it's a RED ONE (with M-X sensor), not an Epic. Image after the break.

The problem with techies is that they're not known for their creativity or appreciation of it. They are more interested in the info than how it is presented, more interested in the power of a computer than its aesthetics. Design and creativity plays an important part in many peoples life, there are times when it becomes style over substance but hey that's life. When I look at a beautiful painting, I appreciate it for its beauty, not what brushes or method the artist used to paint it.
So while there will be a lot of dross kicked out over the coming months, thats just typical of and entertainment medium, most of it is rubbish, some of it will be amazing. The iPad's content will be no different.
@wilvo
+1, i agree completely.
Think of the creative freedom this brings to magazines, comics, online stores. It doesnt need to be all flashy animations like this one, but it could be the next web 2.0
@BogdanGC
I once had a friend who, upon seeing a large (shoal?) of jellyfish in Liverpool, was not interested in seeing such a rare site, he proclaimed it was just too frustrating, as he didn't know why they were there, it would have been better on TV because then someone would explain why they were there. Funny how peoples perceptions differ, some can just enjoy the moment, others need to understand.
@wilvo THAT is probably the best explanation on this site!.. Andriod Users take note!
Given that my just turned 3 daughter learnt to read, write and do math using various iPod touch applications validates for me at least the usefulness of such interactive products. Interestingly she's never watched TV and I'd recommend an ipad like device as a viable learning tool.
In my opinion Apple has done a fantastic job with managing their app store. I look at the stuff in the Android store and I'm glad Apple is taking a different approach.
Where are all of the usual iHaters at? My guess is that they are slowly starting to realize that innovative apps are the read and butter for this device, not the functional apps developed by Apple.
Am I wrong for thinking that someone could easily develop an app that mimics the look, feel, and intuitive design that people seem to be gushing over while watching Microsoft Courier concept videos? Wake up people.
Did you see how many people it took to shoot that short (and relatively useless) video? Isn't creating and adding this new content going to raise the price of making this magazine something like 10-fold?
@Crb
This is what photoshoots look like. Welcome to the industry.
@BrandonHarris
Maybe so, but I still gotta think that adding this extra content absolutely has to be increasing the cost of producing this magazine. If the content creators can create this type of content without upping their costs (or at least not passing that extra cost to the consumer) than I don't really care either way but if this type of stuff is going to raise the prices of this content then I certainly can't see enough value in it to make it worthwhile.
Bring on National Geographic Magazine with all its stunning pictures and great content, and back catalog (if possible). There are times I just want to re-read a magazine I've read months or years prior but cant. This would be great!
Would love to see many of the favorite children's stories on this thing, Cat in the Hat, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to read to the little ones....with animations coming to life with just a simple Touch. Disney would be crazy to not take advantage of such a device (Marvel Comics?)
@dave95
Absolutely! Bring back the interactive stories from the 80's and 90's!
Grandma and Me FTW!
@huskiiiii
Could even play this on a PC :-)
Honesty I like the idea, but nothing relevant to ipad...except the frame, lol.
@FrenchKiss
Yea, because you can really do this same thing with a traditional paper magazine.
okay this is the coolest thing ever, my parents and grandparents would love this haha
Just an FYI, your heart's in the right place, but your facts aren't. RED has offered a sensor upgrade for the RED ONE since Jan 22, 2010. Found here on Reduser.net http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=39816
Keep up the awesome blog otherwise, I read it everyday!
The RED Epic M-X Sensor has been available for installation into Red One cameras for some time now. The Epic camera will follow but for now, all RED ONE owners can have the sensor installed for about $5000.

Anyone remember 'Launch'? Before Yahoo bought them and turned it into Launchcast it was a CD based "digital magazine". This reminds me of that but 2010 version.
Idk abt Viv and what kind of magazine it is but the stop gap nature of the shown animation seems more of a distraction to imho than "the way of the future". Graphic novels? Sure but BW or even Esquire? Not to sure about that.
Also, does anybody know what format this is based on? I'm guessing Air or are the magazines going to be locked into proprietary Apple formats?
Wonder if this was built using a bunch of Adobe software that won't run on the iPad like the wired demo.
So my website that I made www.zinecube.com has a long way to go huh?!

Cinematic Articles? I'll pass on this one. Just give me a digital magazine app and I'll be set. This may take off, but cost a shitload to subscribe.
Behold 2 hours of Ipad battery
