Apple now accepting iPad app submissions, get your jumbo-sized beer drinking simulations in before launch day
Apple just announced to developers that it's now accepting iPad applications. From the sound of it, applications submitted now will have a shot at being reviewed and approved before the iPad launch next month, though since most all apps developed so far have only been tested in the emulator, this is more of a "feedback" round for devs looking to be ready for the launch without actually testing their apps on hardware themselves. Apple says that "[o]nly apps submitted for the initial review will be considered for the grand opening of the iPad App Store," so you probably shouldn't wait around -- unless you've got one of those iPad test units headed your way, or you're a hardware-testing purist that will wait for the iPad launch to start testing apps and miss one of those cushy spots on the opening day iPad App Store. Either way, we can't really imagine we'll be seeing true 3rd party iPad app greatness until a month or so after the launch, but who are we to talk down a "gold rush"?
Update: We just saw that the deadline for getting apps in for the first round is March 27 at 5PM PT. Fire up that SDK 3.2 beta 5 and start cracking!

Who will be the first fart app with the biggest button?
There you go, I said it first.
@pika2000
Darnit, beat me to it...
@pika2000 An app that has a big red button covering the entire screen. It says one word on it. FART.
@pika2000
Or Jumbo Flashlight!
@pika2000
nevermind just one FART button... how about a whole soundboard of fart sounds? get your moneys worth!
The jumbo size fart app should sound like a 400 pound obese fart.
@staticjethro LOL!
@pika2000 I gotta say, I laugh my ass off thanks to my fart app. Why? Because it upsets my wife so much.
@pika2000
All joking aside the best fart app I have ever seen(heard?) was Noble Fart for Android...
@pika2000
But Apple will banned any jiggly boobs apps (it got the biggest button). I'm fine with my 6lb can do almost anything laptop ty.
@pika2000
Should be banned from the App Store.
@bullshitexpresscom
do i foresee a relationship counseling app?
@pika2000 I am hoping they end up fairly distanced from the iPhone counter parts. RTS/Board Games would be so fun on that screen. If this is the case id pay anywhere from free - $30.00 possibly more if the experiences were exceptionally better than similar on iphone.
Anyway here are the best ipad apps today: http://bit.ly/best-apps-for-the-ipad-opinions
I can picture more jumbo-sized fart apps.
*crickets*
can someone make an app that allows multitasking? that would be greeaaat.
@rekit Yea when geohot hacks it and jail breaks it then there will be multitasking. Excuse me as I surf the Internet And have Pandora running in the background on my IPHONE!!!!
@Mtmrob
Real question: what is your battery life like when you are doing that?
is it as bad as Apple says or are they exaggerating?
@Mentat
Not much batter hit.
Just a RAM limitation where the iphone starts killing off 3rd party apps when RAM runs low.
barely any noticable lag either
@Mtmrob
Seriously, how often do you do that? I hear people saying this all the time, but I doubt it's a regular occurrence for most people.
We all know that men aren't great at multi-tasking, we just end up doing both tasks poorly. If you're going to read, read, if you're going to listen to music, listen to music but just do them individually.
@rekit You mean OS4.0? Apple's working on it.
Fwiw I have a jailbroken iPhone and the the usefullness of having full multitasking isn't great IMHO. All the Apple apps do. I guess skype is the one that is really handy.
Wouldnt it be "Now accepting iPad Apps apps?
10 inch mirror please
Some one make an app that makes the iPad a Nvidia Tegra2 Android device with amazing battery life.
@CJisohsocool
Someone make an app that makes stupid comments like those funny.
@yulebellow The app you're talking about is called real life.
@Edobe
Or better yet, The ignore app
@HighestRanked2
LOL ur a moron. TEGRA IS ARM. The Tegra 2 platform is a Dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor coupled along with Ultra Low Power Nvidia graphics.
The iPad uses a scaled down SINGLE CORE ARM9 processor and the same old graphics used in the iPhone 3GS.
@HighestRanked2
Meh? Regarding the mobile OS that is quickly growing to match the iPhone's levels of market share and has been found to be one of the most flexible and robust mobile OS's on the market?
Yeah. Totally. Meh.
/s
Great, now my farts can be 3 times bigger
I'm interested to see what these apps are gonna cost.
@Dgosh I am hoping they end up fairly distanced from the iPhone counter parts. RTS/Board Games would be so fun on that screen. If this is the case id pay anywhere from free - $30.00 possibly more if the experiences were exceptionally better than similar on iphone.
Make an iPad app that divides the screen into four parts, so you can feel that you have four iTouchs! If you can then take it apart it would be worth the money :p
@Rick Goodman four fart apps, all running in harmony
beautiful
Galactic Fart is still the best App available.
The Apps for this thing are what are going to make it badass. Most of the people on this site are drinking the Haterade. I'm going to reserve my judgement until the apps come, but I have a feeling that custom apps designed for a 10" multitouch interface are going to be something we've never seen before.
@DonClark So true. And then imagine the awesomeness this thing will be once jailbroken.
@N900 Now your speaking my lingo.
@DonClark
Wow! Look at these apps that make use of large screens!

http://www.baycongroup.com/word2007/images/01_Word2007Screen.gif
Imagine! Having an app running on a large screen! I can't wait!
@DonClark
Thank you! Well put.
@DonClark
agreed. I'm looking forward to these three
1) RDP/VNC for using as thin client
2) sound/lighting control with like 48 faders
3) touchpad control for desktops
all 3 already exist but now they will be very interesting indeed since they will have the screen size to move beyond toys/tech curios
@Darkroom
You're talking like the iPad has already failed and the HP slate has sold more units.
Do you seriously think the HP slate will sell more units than the iPad?
"the iPad is only a big iPod touch"
And the HP slate ( or any other windows 7 tablet ) is just a netbook without a keyboard. What can a netbook or the HP slate do that my laptop can't?
You and so many others are missing the point. People aren't going to replace their laptops with a tablet pc just as they aren't going to replace their laptops with the iPad. The fact is that with a tablet pc the only benefits you get are the smaller form factor and touchscreen. Everything you do on a tablet PC will just be a poorer experience than the what you could do on your laptop.
The iPad, on the other hand will be the reverse. Everything you do on the iPad will be a better experience than on your iPod touch and no fool will say the iPod touch wasn't / isn't a success.
@DonClark
Well, I'm no iPad fan by any stretch of the imagination (I love that HP slate), but I've heard through the grapevine that the new Sonic game (Sonic the Hedgehog 4) was to be on the iPad...
Its probably gonna look great! But it will probably cost a bundle. And I'm still wondering about those controls though.. (Wirelessly connect with your iTouch as a controller? That would be cool.)
But anywhoo, as much as I hate to admit it, I think with time the app store in particular is what is going to make the iPad a success.
@Darkroom
"WINDOWS FUCKING 7" is a great Desktop/Laptop OS...
See the problem? the iPad and the HP Slate don't have a keyboard and mouse, Windows 7, Mac OS X - they're designed from the ground up for keyboard/mouse input.
For a TOUCH-ONLY device to be successful, it must have an OS that is built for TOUCH! The iPhone OS was built from the ground up to be a touch OS and that's why they scaled it up for the iPad.
Microsoft threw a half-assed touch bandaid onto Windows 7 - IT'S NOT A TOUCH OS, and That's why Windows 7 Tablets will not succeed, that's why all windows tablets have not succeeded.
The iPad is NOT a computer - it will NOT replace your laptop, it's not meant to. But you know what? Neither will the HP Slate, neither will the JooJoo. They're not going to replace anybody's laptop. This is a new category of devices that is very different from a laptop and therefore requires a different OS.
The iPad will be a success for the same reason everyone is hating on it- the iPhone OS. I cannot express my level of disappointment when I first saw Steve hold up this super-bezeled, giant iPod touch. I really couldn't believe that it uses the iPhone OS. But after I got over my original disappointment, it became clear how it makes sense to use an OS that is built from the ground up to be fundamentally controlled by touch. The OS is really just the underlying framework that launches the Apps - which are what will make this device successful. HP is taking a drastically different approach to this space and quite frankly they're doing it wrong.
A desktop OS on a 9" tablet with a thin layer of touch friendly inputs is not going anywhere - it's not what people WANT! Yeah maybe the most vocal tech geeks think its amazing, but it is not usable and will not catch on due to the fact that its not a Touch OS.
The iPad will succeed for 2 reasons:
1. The OS is built from the ground up for finger based input
2. The App store/iTunes ecosystem will provide consumers with a very easy way to get Apps onto this device that fully take advantage of the hardware and change the way we think about computing
Multitouch (ala surface) computing is the future - the iPad is the first step there for consumers.
A Simon like game would be cool. Divide the screen in four squares of green, yellow, blue and red.
or Twister!
Heinrich let see those "i am rich" apps
Giant lighter FTW.
i'm looking for great game titles from ngmoco, gamevil and gameloft
Maybe someone could create a giant full scale board game
that would be ace
