Apple just announced to developers that it's now accepting iPad applications. From the sound of it, applications submitted now will have a shot at being reviewed and approved before the iPad launch next month, though since most all apps developed so far have only been tested in the emulator, this is more of a "feedback" round for devs looking to be ready for the launch without actually testing their apps on hardware themselves. Apple says that "[o]nly apps submitted for the initial review will be considered for the grand opening of the iPad App Store," so you probably shouldn't wait around -- unless you've got one of those
iPad test units headed your way, or you're a hardware-testing purist that will wait for the iPad launch to start testing apps and miss one of those cushy spots on the opening day iPad App Store. Either way, we can't really imagine we'll be seeing true 3rd party iPad app greatness until a month or so after the launch, but who are we to talk down a "gold rush"?
Update: We just saw that the deadline for getting apps in for the first round is March 27 at 5PM PT. Fire up that SDK 3.2 beta 5 and start cracking!
@misterman That actually sounds usefull. you could have all your favorite board games from checkers, to life etc on the iPad.
@misterman Yeah but you won't be able to put pieces on it.
That's why I'm rooting for Surface to take off in mobile devices. Imagine playing RISK on an Tablet. xD
@N900 iPad Command & Conquer would rock.
@N900
Surface on a mobile device? Let me guess, you rode to school on the little yellow bus before dropping out in the sixth grade.
@Ed T uhh, why not surface on a mobile tablet device? its already got everything needed other than maybe the CPU horsepower, though that will come with time. Im sure the 1ghz processors like the snapdragon would be marginally capable of pulling it off, especially if paired with a graphics chip to off load some of the interface rendering.
@d0ug because it can do everuthing surface can do without surface,
Would some people please make some office apps? I would like to see a patient registration/scheduling/medical database app. An iPad could follow a patient/client around an office/hospital/etc. I hope that all the apps are not games because this could be a fantastic business tool.

@lasikexpert any DR that i see using an ipad to interface his practice management software is a DR that i likely wouldn't goto again.
@d0ug
That's a strange line in the sand
I foresee all manner of OMG REALZ size gun appz!!!11!1!!
@BergerFan what, a pistol or two?
iTits is on its way... life size boobs that giggle when you shake the iPad. The free version is boobs with T-Shirts and Bikini tops... the paid version is with out.
@(Unverified) Boobs dont giggle honey.
They Jiggle.
@(Unverified)
A more awesome app would be one you can hold in front of your chest and pretend your breasts can be seen through clothes, lol. Like those X-ray/IR/w/e nude apps.
Hold the iPad in front of you to calibrate. Adjust boob size, body size, skin tone. Now hold it and press the jiggle button.
@ashleythehottiest does jigglyBoobs get an update each week like my gigglyBoobs app does?
Whoop-di-fuckin-doo
@Jeff +++++++++++
the flood gates are open....
Any fart app should sound like a huge spoon being pulled from a vat of Jello
Since this isn't a phone I hope that Apple is a bit more open when approving apps. Let people use their pad (read: computer) the way they damn well want too...

Shouldn't it be:
Not accept apps for approval?
Because if it's the same app store policy, and with the iPads much larger/crispier screen, it should be more like "now accepting apps to deny.".
Of course, they're still happy to accept your $99/yr subscription fee.
Didn't you get the banhammer like 5 days ago?
Thankfully, it can cut and paste.
@Aaquibn
No copy though? So when you go back to the email it's missing chunks.
; p
@ddddd
I don't read embarrassing sites like Gizmodo. Nice try though.
You boys at Engadget getting in there with the first batch of iPad progs?
I heard Virtual Porn will be approved for the Ipad in HD. Lol.
Interactive stripper! Can't wait
@Kunta Kinte
Hadn't thought about that but you are right. Backgammon, monopoly etc, kinda really work multiplayer hmmm
@HighestRanked2
That's a dubious truth. Many things have been considered anew but it's a fair way from some nivarna state
Not choose a doctor because he used an iPad? That is like not using a doctor because of the brand of car he/she drives. I think mobile tablet computing will be very ubiquitous in the health care profession along with many others. The iPad can be a business tool, along with a subscription vehicle, and learning aid. I am just saying that in spite of most of the apps being games, for me who never plays games on computers, there is still a lot of relevant uses. PowerPoint presentations, editing documents, travel computer, .... my office is Dell based but tablet apps would definitely be great for our workflow.

@lasikexpert I remember a couple of Doc friends of mine using Newtons for some sort of patient data tracking long after the Newton was discontinued.
@hated one
There is no single OS of the future, as movies would lead you to believe.
Awesome, jump sized fart apps for the simpleton masses.
@Darkroom
1. "...his gives a running head start for stronger apps and developers that apple wants to have represent them and their product. you won't see any iPad flashlights or fart apps upon release. while this is expected and acceptable from a business (and even logical) point of view, this will anger and alienate the apple developers left behind, and alienate the entire community..."
This doesn't make any sense. Apple will allow only great apps on the launch, no junk, and this will alienate those who buy it?
2. "...the iPad is only a big iPod touch. nothing more / nothing less. sure, it's got a bigger screen but the trade off is now it doesn't conveniently fit in your pocket. it's WILL NOT BE a game changer, rather it's going to be something of industry joke like the MacBook Air. when you have *REAL* tablets being released like the HP Slate that are objectively more useful and stronger, let alone cheaper than the cheapest iPad, there's no chance that the iPad can win. apple has the app store, but the HP Slate has windows 7! WINDOWS FUCKING 7! apple's branding/hype that sells it's computers is weakening. consumers are no longer convinced."
While I am not a Macbook Air fan it does have its place. Its selling. Many people think it was a failure, but how do you now? Maybe Apple just wanted to fill a niche?
I really do not know what do you mean by "real" tablets - objectively more useful? that's nonsense, usefulness is completely subjective; and what do you mean by "stronger" - a slightly faster processor with a full OS on top? If we take the current conversion rates the Slate is more expensive than the cheapest iPad.
Also judging by the number of people buying it I don't see how people aren't convinced. While the Slate can be a very viable competition to the iPad there are many things we don't know about it, and there are people who would prefer a dedicated OS.
Given the camera connector a lite version of Aperture would be awesome.
Big version of Angry Birds - that would be AWESOME!!
looking forward to an 720p version of GYM BABES
The vanity mirror app will be the best seller, you know the app that says you look better than (insert sexy persons name here), the perfect app for Apple users.
How about an app that would allow you to play rts games like warcraft 3, age of empires 2, Homeworld and total annihilation without a keyboard? I have a tablet pc but most rts don't work very well. It just doesn't work like you expect it to. It would be great if they can make the controls on touchscreen intuitive for that.
