Our
16GB microSDHC card has been treating us well since shipping early last year, but obviously no capacity is capacious enough.
SanDisk has just announced that a Class 2, 32GB version of its microSDHC card is now shipping (remember that "
something big" thing?), bringing gobs and gobs (and gobs) of storage space to whatever phones still support it. SanDisk claims that this is the first of its kind, but you can bet that other memory outfits won't be far behind in matching it. It should be hitting e-tailers momentarily for $199.99 (and around £200 if you're in the UK, we're told), which is almost certainly more than the (subsidized) price of the phone you'll be sliding it into.

SANDISK FIRST TO SHIP 32 GIGABYTE MICROSDHC CARD
Consumers Unleash the Potential of Smartphones With
Highest-Capacity Memory Card for Mobile Phones
Milpitas, Calif., March 23, 2010 – SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), the global leader in flash memory cards, today announced that it has begun shipping the world's highest-capacity removable memory card for mobile phones – the 32 gigabyte (GB)1 SanDisk microSDHC™ card. The new microSDHC card offers consumers an unprecedented level of freedom and flexibility in how they store, send and enjoy digital content.
"With the large volume of photos, videos and music that consumers create and carry around, a high-capacity memory card is a must-have component of today's smartphone," said Sanjay Mehrotra, president and chief operating officer, SanDisk. "This is the highest-capacity card of its type, and SanDisk is pleased to be the first to ship such an advanced product. This marks yet another important first in our innovative history in the flash memory industry."
Smartphones have evolved far beyond the simple phone call. They serve as mobile offices, music players, movie theaters, cameras, video recorders, GPS devices and gateways to the mobile Internet. The highly-versatile 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card delivers immediate memory expansion that lets consumers enjoy the storage-intensive features of their advanced handsets. For example, the 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card can store enough music to outlast 35 round-trip flights between San Francisco and New York before repeating a single song.
The 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card is available now on SanDisk.com U.S. and European e-commerce sites, with worldwide retail availability to follow next month. The new card comes with a 5 year limited warranty and carries a suggested retail price of $199.99.
The 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card also lets mobile network operators (MNO) and handset manufacturers (OEMs) equip their subscribers with enough storage to match the industry's leading smartphones. By bundling SanDisk's new card with the phone, consumers get high-capacity mobile storage in a convenient form factor. SanDisk microSDHC cards are also available in 2, 4, 8 and 16GB capacities and are shipping today in volume.
SanDisk is mass producing the new cards based on its industry-leading, third-generation 32nm X3 (3-bit-per-cell) technology, which makes a 32GB capacity possible in such a small form factor. The successful development and wide distribution of many X3-based products through OEM and retail channels in recent years demonstrates both the technology's maturity and SanDisk's ability to quickly bring it to market.
SanDisk microSDHC cards adhere to the stringent quality expectations of top-tier handset manufacturers and MNOs, and SanDisk is taking orders now. To meet the specific needs of different OEM customers, the 32GB SanDisk microSDHC card is available in a variety of card and adapter configurations as well as with the option to pre-load the card with custom software.
"$199.99 (around £200 in the UK, we're told)"
please explain :S
@commenter7 You got owned by exchange rates.
@commenter7
prices differ across the pond, they're usually a little higher in the UK vs. the US, especially if you take exchange rates into account.
@Exbloder
more like tax rates than exchange
@djameson
A whole 50% higher. :-/
200 GBP is 300 USD...
@commenter7
You can pretty much expect most things to cost in Pounds in the UK what they do in Dollars in the US. I lived in England when I was younger, as well as for a semester during college. During the former time, the exchange rates were between 1.5 and 1.7 USD to 1 GBP. During the latter time, they were about 2-to-1. During both times, you could expect to spend, say $5 on a McDonald's meal in the US, or £5 on the same thing in the UK.
Twitter's down.
Oh, this is about the 32GB microSDHC. Well, load it with pr0n, I say!
@Exbloder
Just buy it in the US. Simple.
@commenter7
£200 is a bit of an exaggeration now...
Its listed here on Moby Memory for £95.99
http://mobymemory.com/products/SanDisk/Sandisk-32gb-Micro-SD-SDHC-PRE-ORDER.asp
@stevenf17
Yeah c'mon! What r the chances MobyMemory will actually send you a bona-fide gen-u-wine SanDisk card for that money?
Remember the news article about how groups of, essentially criminals, are running the companies card manufacture plants at night time and churning out really dodgy copies of the originals? I think the guy from Chumby did an expose - just google for chumby fake memory card.
They'll just hold out for those ghost-shift models and knock them off as genuine SanDisk models.
The pic on the site doesn't instill me with confidence either!
I told you guys a few days ago when you first found that "something big" ad on their site...
@monkeychef23 I called it first
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/20/something-big-coming-from-sandisk-complete-with-cape/
:p
@monkeychef23
Where's the cape?
@Imran I actually tipped them, who cares about comments, lol (jk, everyone does)
@monkeychef23 @imran how about this: you guys are both idiots.
dooooosh
"to whatever phones still support it"
Uh, yeah, like every recent smart phone released that isn't an iPhone or Palm?
@Leindurstit Well, this IS Murph posting, so there are various way you can read that: either he's yet another e iPhanboy, or he's trying yet again to be exceedingly snarky. Or possibly both.
@patsy I'm saying the iPhone *SHOULD* support it. Boo on Apple for not including a slot.
@DarrenMurph Well, if they did, how could they have sold you 4GB of flash for $100? Even with the 3GS, while not as blatant as before, $100 for 16GB is still above street price. And then when you realized that 8/16GB wasn't enough, would you have bought a new phone all over again?
@DarrenMurph Oh, fair enough about what you meant, I misread the sarcasm I guess. Mind you, given Apple's desperate attempts to sell you flash memory, I'm confused about their pricing (see e.g. the iPad): are 16GB of flash $100 or $50? I guess with them the answer is Yes.
ERRRRNT! Wow... I was foaming at the mouth for doubling my 16GB capacity, but not for $200. Fifteen months ago my 16GB MicroSD was under $70!!
Obviously that's launch price. A month later when all major companies have them as well as the chinese fake ones break into the market, they'll drop to sub-$100. Normal everyday life in the tech world, what rock are you living under?
@Almo
How about the one where I never said I would be purchasing one at launch? Trust me, I'm well aware of the timeframe that storage prices take to decline.
@Level 5
This actually isn't bad. The 16GB (and IIRC, 8GB) launched at $300.
@Almo
Prices are always dictated by the chinese fake market...
@Almo please don't post such uninformed posts. During the last 12 months, microSD and SDHC prices have stalled entirely, with 16GB Class 6 MicroSDs not budging from the $65-$70 mark. Flash memory prices are a completely different animal from mp3 players and TVs, since they're much more likely to be constrained by supply.
1st lol...16gb is more than enough
@junaid2pac
You aren't first, and more space is always good.
Shoo, troll!
*sprays some Troll Be Gone*
@junaid2pac wow, you sir are a tard.
This cant be the something big
My Wallet: "Say Whaaaaaaaat?!?!"
Contrary to popular belief, this is actually something very small
@nelagster
That's what I said?!?
Class 2 !!... for $200 !!... Lame
@ajkl My thought exactly. Let's wait for the $80 C6 version I say.
me no want class 2 for $200
me live with class 6 for $40
size no matter me
@blland
hooked on phonics
@iroq d mullet
Speak his language then talk smack.
@blland
me love you long time for $5
@blland Trust me, she's not impressed by your speed, and she does care about size even if she tells you she doesn't.
am gonna buy 128GB samsung SSD rather ;)
this is pretty awesome, we've been waiting what? since 2007 for this announcement? $200 is a bit much, but i think it'll be well worth it when i get my first smart phone sometime this year!
Holy cow. I just ordered a 16GB card for my Touch Pro 2 (for, what $40?). This is a lot of space, but costs more than my phone did.
No, your phone costs 400-something, your carrier paid a big chunk for it. And your 16GB card is probably class 4 or 6, which is way faster.
ah worth it! i have 12gb in my mini and download movies at work to watch at home via the tv out. i need more space. this is perfect!
" bringing gobs and gobs (and gobs) of free storage to whatever phones still support it"
$199 aint free!
Nice , the midi controller I designed can surely use this. I will probably wait just a bit for the initial price drop.
Woot I wanna put this little bad boy in my nexus one
How is this bigger than a regular 64GB SD card? Wait, I see what you did there, SanDisk.
About damned time, I've been out of space since a year and a half ago when I bought my 16gb microsd
