AMD 12-core Opterons leaked ahead of launch?
Provantage of North Canton (isn't that the birthplace of Marilyn Manson?) is featuring a number of 12-core AMD Opteron processors on its retail website. Obviously, this is well-ahead of the launch -- and subject to the usual caveats -- but if you're a chip-head the info is rather interesting nonetheless. The most expensive of the lot, the Opteron X12 6176 SE (pictured above) is a 2.3GHz processor with an 18MB cache, 105 watts, and it can be yours for $1,485.61. If you're not quite in the mood to break the bank, the X12 6128 SE is a 2GHz chip with 16MB, 80 watts, and it's currently listed at $291. According to PC World, the processors (codenamed Magny-Cours) should start shipping to retailers "around the time Intel announces the eight-core Nehalem-EX processor," later this month -- even if it appears that someone in Ohio has jumped the gun a little bit.

Really..I wish AMD could really get back into the processor game. Granted, Intel is as to Honda is AMD is a Chevy (I drive a Chevy) - I know they could really pull to the front. True tech nerds choose AMD in my humble opinion.
Glad to see this coming.
@Distant
Intel offers the best CPUs between 200-1000$ (well, if you're buying a 1000$ CPU, I'm pretty sure you're buying Intel) and AMD offers the best on the lower end. It's just that... i7's are so damn sexy. Even their name... is just mesmerizing.
@Distant
Who says they're out of it?
AMD beats intel at every price point below $200.
And when you by a $120 processor the average joe won't use half that power.
@Gamecheater
I'm speaking of the market at the moment. But that's Intel's monopoly - not AMD's fault.
I'd like to see them re-live the legacy that they once had in the computer gaming realm. The AMD / ATi combination really isn't a rival to Intel / NVidia.
People see a hertz rating and automatically think they're the same speed. Stability and the manufacturing process lend a lot to speed differences. Look at any well-done benchmark and Intel will pull ahead, always. Plus speed doesn't matter if your computer crashes. :P
I'm rooting for AMD and totally hope their newer line can match Intel with a lower price-point, because then we'd actually get some competition here.
@Special Agent Steve AMD offers 4 cores at 2.7 Ghz for 250 while intel offers 4 cores at 500 or more
@Distant I'd like to see more Intel/ATI combinations. I'm really not so keen on getting a laptop that doesn't support DX11, but I need something with a powerful CPU, so an AMD Turion is out of the question. I've used laptops with Turion processors several times and they just haven't been as powerful as the laptops I've used with Intel processors (even my old Core Duo).
@angelwolf Where did you pull that 500 figure from? You can get a 3.2G quad core i5 for $185.
George Takei "OH MYYYYYY"
Oxymoron of the week goes to, AMD with, "only $1485.61"
@TacticalTimbo When you realize that this is a server grade chip, and that Intel's 6-core processor starts around $2400, you can see why this is an "only"... These are designed to run database servers (and other systems with many concurrent threads), not games. So reliability is as important as speed. The interesting thing about this, is it's still using the socket F connector (1207). That means that if you have a relatively recent AMD board (basically purchased in the past 3 or 4 years), these will likely be just a drop in replacement. Considering that the socket came out with the dual core SantaRosa, you can go from 2 to 12 cores for just the price of the chip. So yes, AMD is still competitive...
X12 6128 SE is a 2GHz chip with 16MB, 80 watts, and it's currently listed at $291.
This particular X12 (6128SE) has 8 cores. Not 12. Either Provatage is wrong about about the chip's info or AMD is playing with our heads.
@allston232
Either way, that 8 core one is a steal :D
@allston232 8 cores for less than $300 seems pretty damn good, especially if you put it in a desktop rather than a server. I can dig it.
Yeah but what can you get from Intel at that price? An i3?
only replying to this because you mentioned a nearby city. go canton?
Marilyn Manson was born in Canton, Ohio.
I live in North Canton. I think I should pay Provantage a visit and ask whats the deal is tomorrow.
I live in Jackson Township. is that close enough to North Canton?
@JXCGunrunna No. Close, but a couple miles away.
honestly im beginning to think, do we really need this much computing power?
@rennagata92
gaming duhhhhhh
@rennagata92 Some of us need it, and crave for more cores.
Aside from gaming, I'd mention databases and virtual machines.
I'm sure I could find something to keep those cores busy pretty fast.
I'm not that sure how can I get the $$$ for it, though...
I just creamed my pants.... again.... lmfao
wow, I'm getting the "X12 6128 SE is a 2GHz chip with 16MB, 80 watts, and it's currently listed at $291".
Got a nice set of ballistix ram that would scream with that cpu... the "g34" socket is quite strange... i have never heard of it before
@pstasyna its a server socket
Will it enough to running Cryis?
8 cores at 2ghz each? yes plz.
I don't care that they arent intel fast. Thats going to be the hotness right there.
CPU has a new socet G34.
@zvnbadboy
Check out these two boards:

Drool on!
@ceteras
I wrote that it has a different socket, because @ircmaxell in his post wrote "The interesting thing about this, is it's still using the socket F connector"
AMD's 12 core is a bit more expensive than Intel's 6 core, and AMD's 6 core is a fifth as expensive as Intel's. Bravo, AMD. This is why I like you.
