We just spent a few fleeting moments with
AT&T's just-announced Pre Plus and Pixi Plus from Palm, and they're pretty much exactly what you'd expect: GSM remixes of the models available on Verizon (we weren't allowed to take a peek at the SIM slots, but rest assured, there's an AT&T carrier logo up there at the top left). Both devices seemed relatively zippy -- yes, even the Pixi -- though that can naturally change pretty quickly once you've got a few cards chugging away. We were delighted to see that Palm loaded our very own Engadget app on their demo devices -- a good way for booth stoppers-by to catch up on show news, eh? Check out the gallery below, and keep an eye out for more coverage throughout the day!
ZZZzzzzzzzz..... huh, what, Incredible?
No?
okay... zzzz ZZZZZ ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......
@steel Right there with ya, bud. You know when Big Red or HTC are doing presentations?
@steel
Wait the incredible will be running android right?
ZZZZzzzzZZZZZ
See how that can work both ways?
Stop trolling.
Palm needs new hardware. That no one can disagree with but that doesn't mean that the Pre + and Pixi + are worthless.
I wish they would bring them to Sprint so I could get my mom and brother one. I'd love to bring them to AT&T but I know my mom will bitch about the price of the data plan plus texting (and I honestly can't blame her).
Still though I think AT&T is loads better than Sprint and this phone in particular should be a beast of a phone on AT&T.
For the love of God though Palm PLEASE announce something....ANYTHING! I need to know you guys are still in this to win it.
@InspectorEngadget
I've would've bought this last year if it came out much sooner to At&t but now it's way too late. Palm deserves to fail.
@TheLondonExchange
Dude, seriously? You're defending these devices? Why? The Pre was announced over a year ago. Even Apple releases a new phone more often than that (if you call menial upgrades a new phone, that is)
@steel me and my girl been waiting for this bad boy and bad girl to come out.
hell yeah
@TheLondonExchange bring the pre to Sprint? What the heck are you talking about the Pre were launched exclusively on Sprint.
@InspectorEngadget
I'm hearing there is a press conference @ 3pm.
@steel Hey why don't you occupy yourself with some 3d gaming on your android phone... oops i forgot, no games. I'll play them for you on my pre and you can continue snoozing.
@steel
Uhh stop hating
@ moto
What the fuck are you talking about? I'm talking about the Pre+ and Pixi+
You know...the devices that this article is about? I swear people are just being more stupid by the day on this website.
As for Apple and it's yearly update that's to be expected and Apple can get away with it because they're popular and people have come to expect that. Not to mention they are not on the brink of bankruptcy...
@steel although it was announced a year ago, as a European, we only just got our hands on the Pre shortly before the announcement of Pre+.. I'm just waiting for the GSM Pre+ to arrive in the UK now @_@
@steel
Apple releases a new phone roughly once a year. The Pre was ANNOUNCED a year ago but wasn't out till late spring/early summer. It hasn't been a year yet and they're expected to release a new unannounced handset around the one year mark (around the same time as the new iPhone announcement most likely)
@TheLondonExchange It actually does mean they're worthless.
Look at the Pixi's sales, no one wants it, depsite good marketing and cheap costs. Look at the Pre, no one wants that plastic, small screened, underpowered phone either.
In a world of Droids, Nexus Ones and even iPhones, yes, Palm's hardware is worthless. It's just true.
@JONNNathannn Underpowered? Doesn't it use the same ARM processor as the iPhone?
@JONNNathannn
Good marketing...HA! Don't make me throw up. The marketing for both phones on both Verizon and Sprint has been a disaster. An absolute disgrace.
As for hardware the iPhone 3GS is powerful but even I as an Apple supporter know that the Droid and Nexus One have the edge in that department. Not that they are benefitting from it. People are still flocking to the iPhone in droves. It continues to outsell both of those overhyped "iPhone killers" and Apple/AT&T continue to make serious money from the iPhone.
So more powerful hardware doesn't necessarily equal success and lots of money.
At this point Palm needs an image makeover for it's product line. It's been decimated by the stupid commercials.
The Pre+ and Pixi+ are great phones but I agree that Palm needs a new flagship phone. PRONTO.
@JONNNathannn: Palm good marketing?
I hate Palm's marketing.
@steel
ya that pre is so outdated, funny that it is so outdated that from what I read there are only 2 android phones getting flash 10.1 because of hardware... Lol driod has the exact same processor as the pre even through driod came out 10 months after the pre was announced (so was driod out of date when it came out?), iPhone won't be getting flash anytime soon... Man that pre is so outdated it's crazy... What was palm thinking? Lol nerd!!
@TheLondonExchange
Get them the original Pre then? No?
Oh yeah, another one of those "I would buy one but.." Palm fans!
@JONNNathannn
jon is a troll. 800MHZ patch for pre is coming out tommorow, its wicked fast, faster then those clunky android devices!
800 mhz patch is a game changer for the pre..
@TheLondonExchange
I love my Pre...as my wife and daughter love theirs...and we represent three distinctly different users - a super techie who likes to hack, a standard consumer who likes things to just work, and a teen who is all about texting, photos, facebook, etc.
Frankly, the OS is awesome...and the Plus versions add enough memory to get rid of the lag that is inherent in the JS MVC UI layer. It's sad that Palm isn't doing better, but it is a very competitive landscape right now...and many consumers prefer to buy a brand (and potentially status) rather than evaluate a product on its merits...and Palm does not have a brand that many folks want. Sad, but true. Either way, I am sticking with them as long as I can.
@TheLondonExchange said "You know...the devices that this article is about? I swear people are just being more stupid by the day on this website."
I almost wet myself I laughed so much at that.
It's funny because it's true.
@steel I was released in June of last year how is that a year? It has only been some 7 or 8 months what are you talking about?
@motorolo I think he meant the Pre Plus not the Pre
@Francis L4D their marketing department/company should be shot... what a great phone/os that is being killed by people who are in charge of marketing this product...
i know the developers are so eager to kick the marketing departments ass bc they are killing all of their great work
@Hmm The one thing that still keeps me hangin' on with palm is its web.OS, I say don't quit :D http://bit.ly/web-os-1-4-reactions
Unless Palm drops new hardware, then I'm totally on the WebOS wagon.
@motorolo He means bring the pre plus and pixi plus to Sprint. The difference is the difference between the iphone 3G and the iphone 3GS
@shaze21 I agree to an extent but really...most games on a touchscreen is frankly quite bad. Manufactures really need to come out with accessories. There's a reason why the PSP or DS don't (only) have touchscreen input.
Maybe they took the survival guide to heart?
amendment to survival guide:
release it tomorrow.......unlocked.
What ELSE did Palm show?
@Freakin Ijit Silly you, Palm doesn't make new products!
@JONNNathannn I believe that palm has made more products in their history than you have ma'am/sir, unless I have missed the JONNphone in my consumer product searches on cnet.
@JONNNathannn HA! Hey the Pixi has a new AT&T-exclusive blue backing. That's new. And actually, something Endgadget didn't mention but Pre Central did, is that this isn't running webOS 1.4 like all the other Palm phones. It's running some code-named OS version. So at least that would be news worthy. Sort of.
@statelypenguin Er...okay...
What's that first comment up at the top?
Now if only they were unlocked...
@j2daake Exactly, I really want to import a Pre :S
@j2daake
Exactly, Palm is wasting my time with these carrier lock ins.
Palm, dude, I have cash waiting with your name on it, just sell the frackin gsm version sim free and worldwide for gods sake.
@Exbloder
Import? What poor ass country do you live in?
I would love to demo the Engadget app on my Droid to you. Wait...
@hexoDAT64 I hear that, any idea when it's coming out?
@kuppcake I still don't understand this. When all these phones have web browsers, what would an Engadget app bring that I cannot already access through their website?
@Hmm on iPhone it's good because iPhone browser sucks and Engadget and Engadget's comments crash the browser like crazy.
On Android, I don't know. People just like apps. I use RSS, so it doesn't matter to me. But yeah, I don't get why people want it so bad either...it doesn't even flow or solve problems, it would be cool if embedded videos were watchable in it but they're not.
@Hmm
Who cares? Use it or don't. The Earth still revolves
@JONNNathannn Safari on my iPhone 3GS doesn't crash like crazy. I can't say it has never crashed, but I also can't remember the last time that it did. Suffice it to say that it is a rare occurrence. Admittedly I haven't tried reading Engadget on my iPhone. I just don't end up doing that on my phone, and further I don't have the Engadget app because, well, I don't know why I'd want that either. Maybe it has something that isn't on the web page or makes it easier to browser then would be possible with a web page? Maybe it offers notifications. That could be me. In any case, I haven't downloaded it. Maybe I should check it out.
@crunc
Safari on my 3GS crashes regularly on the full engadget page while loading comments.
@loginatnine The Engadget site crashes on mobile Safari because the Engadget site has over 200 javascript errors. Goodness, it won't even load on my PS3 browser! Pretty poor for a "tech blog" to be honest.
If you showed a photo of the Pixi or Pre running the Engadget app showing the article about the Pixi & Pre with a photo of the Pixi or Pre running the Engadget app showing the article about the Pixi & Pre, my head would explode.
@whySoSerious That's like worse division by zero.
yeah. we know that a phone might slow down if it's running multiple apps. you don't have to mention that every time you review a phone with multi-tasking possibilities
Too little too late.
