You may be seeing a rumor doing the rounds today about Palm throwing in the towel and moving to the Android platform as a means of survival -- but just hang on. Most reports are citing an email that made its way to the inbox of what looks like every major tech outlet, stating that CEO Jon Rubinstein issued an internal memo to software developers at the company about the switch. The supposed memo quotes Jon as saying, "While Palm is incredibly proud of our engineers who spent timeless work and effort to bring us this advanced operating system, consumers simply have not caught on. To provide a better future for ourselves and our customers, the only logical choice is to transition our hardware and software to the Android platform." The plan -- according to this email -- would be to create a kind of
Sense UI-ish webOS interface on Palm devices, while leveraging Android's market footprint. The anonymous emailer went on to say that the full memo would be made available on
Wikileaks at midnight last night.
But guess what? Not only did the memo not appear at the stroke of 12, but when we picked up the phone and actually spoke to Palm, they had a pretty quick response. Their answer? Our sources at the company essentially laughed when they heard this news, and they emphatically stated that there was no memo, and no move internally towards Android. Furthermore, many of the reports are citing a bunk piece of news from Monday which erroneously stated that Palm had halted production --
that news has also been refuted by the company. Admittedly, our minds reel at the concept of Android with a webOS UI, but until we get some real, verifiable evidence of that (and not just a random email), we're going to assume it's not happening. You should do the same.
@wallyson
got any examples of something webOS has that android doesnt? I'm on the nexus one and it can do everything and then some. Way better than my previous iPhone
@pitnefor - I'm saying that something is missing in the flow of the software. Android is still clumsy and just not as fluid as WebOS.
@wallyson
wow you are WAY off. Android is the smoothest most user friendly OS around. I think you need to get with the times and use a newer phone with android 2.1. Android is the best experience you'll find on any phone on the market today
@pitnefor uhmm...no?
as for best user interface, it goes webOS > android
and this is coming from an iphone user
get with it
Well, I'll say this, I once worked with one of the guys who works on the OS at Palm and he's sending out his resume right now. I assumed it was just because his stock was going to be worthless, but maybe it was because they were discontinuing the OS.
I do have to say it seems strange to me. Palm only has two real assets, their patent portfolio and this OS. It'd be odd to abandon the OS.
Another idea would be a dual boot between webos and android... let people buy for android and let them use webos... in the long run they would know whether to further develop webos or dump it..
Stick WebOS on that new Blackberry Slider. Rugged looking and solid hardware, touch screen and a hidden Qwerty for those who don't have fingertips the size of pencil erasers.
Why doesn't Palm just do like they did with iTunes and create a backdoor so that Andriod apps work on WebOS. BAM! App Catalog up to 32,000 apps instantly. They're both built on Linux, Make It So
I doubt Palm is moving to Android or Staying Alive.
yuck, android on the pre would b ugly... on the other hand, webos on any capable hardware would b awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WebOS ist great. And if there was more interesting Hardware on the market right no, I'd ditch most Android Handsets for that.
Yawn. Anyone who's anyone has already cashed out on this dog. Next.
yeah, agree with most people here. As a palm pre owner on sprint, i like webos more than I like the hardware of the phone. I like the idea of seeing the OS on other phones.
I actually really enjoy Palm's webOS. :P It's really smooth and fluid.
Although, it's hard to say much considering I have a BlackBerry. Haha.
Interesting rumor, but it is just that. If it's true, I think Palm could do some great things with Android.
You palm fan boys sicken me. I bet none of you actually used an android 2.1 device to say that Palm is leaps and bounds over the competition just software wise. If Palm integrated WebUI into android the possibilities are endless. Palm knows that they are not in the upcoming top trio of OS's which are Apple, Google, and Microsoft's operating systems. They can easily integrate their card view and their way of multi tasking, and well designed native apps in Android. Plus, the huge amount of growing apps in Android will elevate Palm to another level they would not achieve on their own.
I agree new top level hardware is needed, but you people have to realize its too late for them. Palm should of debuted better hardware on all carriers, but now since their stocks aren't that valuable, a drastic revolutionary change is needed to save WebOS. That revolutionary change needed is Android!
@Android4Eva
and you're saying this as a completely unbiased, android user (not a fanboy)
/sarcasm
@Android4Eva They could do that of course, but it wouldn't really be the solution you think it is. Android and Palm both have made from scratch graphics subsystems which are actually very similar, and both could use the others means of doing cards/live widgets in the home application. The more difficult part would be to have actual Android apps on top of Luna, or to have the WebOS rendering system on top of Dalvik/SurfaceFlinger/etc.
HTC should buy Palm that way their troubles withApple will be over too. WebOS will also survive since they will be able to make lots of phones with WebOS.
that would possibly be one of the dumber moves they could make.
Nothing against android in particular but WebOS is better.
Palm staying alive??
Not for long at this rate.
Palm called me today to ask about my Pre Plus.... They are taking consumer feedback very seriously and doing what they can to satisfy customers.
Logically they would not move to android especially after they JUST improved upon their SDK and now support native languages. Even if they didn't just make that change, it wouldn't make very much sense for them to just waste away all of that investment they put into WebOS. Next we might see "Steve Jobs Sends out memo to employees stating that iPhone will be moving to Android".
If palm goes for Android, she's dead, period. My dream is to see Palm developing WebOS for HTC devices (an idea from your latest podcast actually!).
Yay, WebOS is still alive!
(Remember, Android Hell is a real place where you will be sent at the first sign of defiance)
I think a Palm Android device could be awesome. Like on the homes-creens, you could flick them down (flick from top to bottom) to pull up the multitasking cards interface and flick the cards up to kill an app. And maybe flicking down on the home-screens could pull up the apps, instead of using a launcher tray button. Sounds like a good idea to me.
@Fat Scooter
Sorry, I meant flick up for the cards, down for the apps. XP
