Samsung Galaxy S hands-on with video
Samsung dragged the Galaxy S out for us to gawk at this morning at CTIA and after the 30 minute video presentation, we were itching to actually check it out in our hands. Let's just get this out of the way right off: the 4-inch WVGA 800 X 480 Super Amoled display on the Galaxy S is nothing short of stunning. Put side by side with an iPhone under some very harsh lighting, the difference between them -- feel free to have a peek at the video after the break -- is pretty astounding. Everything is bright and crisp, text legible, and the colors are jaw-droppingly beautiful. Touchscreen performance? This is another standout on this Android 2.1 device and coupled with Samsung's 1GHz Application Processor, not only is it responsive but the UI is smooth and fast. The Galaxy S can shoot HD video at 720p using its 5 megapixel cam, plays it back with aplomb, and did we mention the display? The spec sheet lists this as triple-band HSPA device living in the 900 / 1800 / 1900 realm -- and while US availability was announced for this year, no word on what carrier -- so we hope to see that 900 swapped out with 850. This is one for the wish list friends, and we're seriously hoping that wish gets filled long before this year's holiday season.

She can do that on the camera and not mention what she is doing on the camera? What? Did i hear that right?
@who said what New Engadget Player?
@who said what I am sorry but after seeing the EVO 4G just a minute ago this phone just doesn't have the thunder...Shit, no phone has the thunder anymore!
@who said what
I assumed it to be that she was just shy or something.
@angermeans Oh man I know what you mean. I made the same mistake of watching that HTC EVO clip...
@kozjegyzo Is it me or do the UI and the overall desing resembles the iphone too much? ....disgusting.
However this phone is good piece of machinery...never mind we have the EVO now!
S vs iPhone comparison
Me: *jaw drops*
That screen is BEAUTIFUL!
@who said what Those super-amoled screen surely made anyone's eyes perk up. There's a lot of improvement here: First view: http://bit.ly/samsung-galaxy-s-phone
no she just didnt want to give up her gum
@angermeans this phone is way better than the EVO, its got a much better OLED screen as opposed to the EVO's old school LCD, better camera, more sensible size, more powerful processor etc etc
@angermeans if I'm correct the EVO 4G shares the same processor as the Nexous one. If so this phone is 4x faster than that. Who has the thunder now?
@marxman
Really? Better camera? The Super AMOLED is nice, but the rest of the phone is mediocre save the GPU. Touchwiz is absolutely terrible.
(down three posts)
Apple and Android mixed together? Anyone?
@VanityPhairs
I smell an Apple lawsuit cooking...
On a side note, who the $@ wants their Android interface to look like an iPhone?
@VanityPhairs
I dont think they can sue google because the OS is opensource
but tbh their skin is a balantly rippoff of the iphone menu
@VanityPhairs It's going to be amazing to see what Android OS's market share looks like at the end of the year. March forth, Android army.
@VanityPhairs
Good luck too them Samsung have been making phones for a LONG time and have plenty of patents themselves.
Do we really believe Apple can patent a grid of icons ? LOL
@commenter7 Yea, it's a bit too similar to the iPhone for my liking. It rips off a lot things, even down to the animations and transitions. There's so much meetooism going on nowadays, thats one of the reasons I love Windows Phone 7 Series. They went in their own direction, well done Microsoft. There are other ways people.
@VanityPhairs
Is this the bastard love child of an Iphone and EVO 4G????
@commenter7 Oh yeah it is a grid with icons. Apple invented that...Not
@xkaosu9x
Hint: Only successful Platforms get sued.
Apple didn't sue Palm, they just let them die on the vine. Saves money in Legal Fees.
@VanityPhairs
apple should sue themselves. i'll take samung over apple anytime anyday.
@xkaosu9x
so putting icons in a grid is a copy now?
It's already on my wish list! Right under the HTC EVO and the Courier.
I'm pretty sure everyone is still changing their pants and re-staining them due to the EVO post...galaxy hang in their patna
god why do people bother showing their hands in the pictures ruins the picture
@ajac09
I enjoy being able to see the size of the phone compared to a human hand.
And then the Galaxy screamed "holy crap look at that Evo!!!"
That screen is so sexy
@dynomite16
this screen destroys Evo.
if i really wanted a super-spec phone, i would wait for Samsung's answer to EVO. i don't care how advance EVO is samsung destroys HTC in screen quality.
@michigan4life
You are totally right. The Samsung Super Amoled screens are no match with any phone out there right now.
I can not wait for the new S. Phones (S stands either for Samsung or Super ;-), the Samsung Wave and Samsung Galaxy S to hit the Netherlands. I'll definitely buy the first one that is launched here.
I have read dutch reviews at http://www.gsmpedia.nl/samsung-wave and at http://www.gsmpedia.nl/samsung-galaxy-s
I am so jealous that these exciting new phones allways first arrive in the States. Did you buy one of these allready? Or is there another phone out there with a better screen than the Samsung Amoled screens?
If so, let me know, but i cannot imagine it's possible. I have watched video's several times. Can't wait.... but have to....
I feel like this is going to be another phone like the Omnia II last year...awesome hardware that gets wasted by a terrible Samsung UI. Seriously, that company is in despare need of either hiring a new custom design staff, or just sticking with stock.
I think this was a bad for this to be announced due to the EVO 4G.
@iHakr Why? This has almost the same specs but with a better screen(plus this was technically announced earlier). The only downside is that iPhony UI
@MarcusMaximus
3G vs. 4G
/discussion.
@BigJayDogg3
Good thing 4G is as widely accessible as 3G!
Oh wait . . .
@Cata
Crap wrong tab hehe
go back to the kitchen!
@Kinte Kunta In some ways, but the 4" Super AMOLED screen is unique. Smaller than the Evo 4G, but most likely a lot nicer looking.
Also, one is Sprint, one is "unknown GSM", so this phone appeals to a differnet group of carriers.
Between this and the Evo, things look pretty exciting. Now, if only we could get the Evo with this beautiful screen. It's unfortunate that Samsung made this kick-ass of a handset only to completely ape the iPhone UI for part of its interface.
BOOM.
HEADSHOT
Well, I have my Nexus One, and happy that the Android family is geowing up, but take care Samsung, I think Apple is going OVER YOU?
@Kinte Kunta
Exactly, samsung picked the absolute worst time to release this.
EVERYONE RUN FOR THE HILLS, ITS THE ANDROID TAKE OVER!!!!!!!
@Kinte Kunta between the 2, ill buy whichever reaches Portugal first :)
she probably said she can't be on camera cuz she's a noob
It looks like a Kirf iPhone.
@Kinte Kunta How so? They have extremely similar specs. Same speed processor, screen on this is slightly smaller(4" is still huge though) but much higher quality, same video resolution(actual comparative photo/video quality has yet to be seen).
@Kinte Kunta
I agree, but Super Amoled technology far surpasses the current technology on the TFT displays (Iphone, Supersonic).
Being able to use your phone in direct sunlight usually isn't an issue but when it is you want the Super Amoled :)
