No big surprise here, but Microsoft is bringing its full
Project Natal setup to the E3 games show in LA this year, with a "world premiere" event on Sunday, June 13th, followed by a media briefing on Monday the 14th. It's good to know they're on track for showing this off, after a no-show at the
PlayStation Move-dominated GDC, and we'll of course be there in force, waving our arms around like we just don't care. From the looks of our invite, which puts the name "Project Natal" in quotes, we're not convinced that's even the final name for the device, but we suppose we'll find out for sure in June. Microsoft promises this will be our "first look at the future of fun," and we imagine some near-final hardware and beta game experiences will be on display as well. No word in the invite, but we imagine a Fall launch is still in the cards, with Jonathan Ross's
"October" tweet as the most recent morsel on that front.
Roll on E3
@ChairmanMeow
E3 is too long away!
@ChairmanMeow Project Natal Will change the world: http://j.mp/natal-time-official-impressions
@InternetExplorer
It also has voice recognition commands too. I like the fact that you can turn off/on your console just by saying a command with it...
About time. I can't wait for this to be released.
In other news, if I wanted a Wii, I would have bought a damn Wii.
@GeauxTiger
I know your trolling but i digress.
DONT BUY IT IF YOU DONT WANT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok...got that out of my system.
@matty
It's not trolling; I legitimately wish Microsoft would shift their focus towards something innovative or improving upon their strengths. Namely games, graphics, and online. Allow Nintendo to be Nintendo. Different demographic.
Maybe the Courier is next?
@delgadilloaaron hopefully it's one of those here it is, releasing in a month sort of deals.
@InternetExplorer
You don't know how badly Noone want's to play with the Move.

Somebody's desperate to show off what they got. Announcing the date all early. I prefer Sony's Move either way.
@KennyR You know who else prefers the Move, owls.

@KAL326
Lol
I'm damn sure my first victory was WAAAY before my first concert.
@PhoenixFox
That DOES have to be one of the worst promotional graphics ever.
the 3d games on ds are gonna be better heres a video demo

@SoManyPhones
wow, it works exactly how i thought it would.
@SoManyPhones
This is NOT a video demo of the future 3DS.
@SoManyPhones
that's not a 3d game. That's a tech demo of head-tracking using the DSi's camera and the acceleromitor. It gives the illusion of 3d.
The 3ds will be an actual 3d screen autostereoscopic or something of the sort.

Can't we be friends?
I could see someone releasing a 'Porn for Natal' game. It would be interesting ;)
@tmurph lol very interesting
@tmurph OMG, is there indie games for Natal??? If so, I might be willing to pay the $100 and do some XNA developing.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget: I'm sure it'll become available around the time of Natal's release.
My first crush was in kindergarten... :S
I'm curious to see what the final product ends up looking like and how much it will cost. I'll buy one to swipe and talk through the dashboard. That is one advantage its immediately going to have over move. Will be interesting to see if sony adapts move to move with the xmb.
It will also be interesting to see what games it will have.... since its nothing like the wii or move if games are designed from the ground up for natal it could be better than what the wii/move will do. Then again its just as likely it will fail miserably.
I was disappointed to find out that the PS3 Move was still just accepting "gestures" and was not tracking real-time positions. I don't know if that is a software problem or the hardware.
I hope Natal does a better job at tracking actual positions real-time, even with quick movements.
Still concerned about lack of buttons on Natal. How do you fire a gun?
@Pingles
Unlike the Move, since Natal is based on cameras, you can introduce other peripherals. Not just the ones companies put out.
Remember the video Microsoft had where the kid held up a skateboard and the camera recognized it? Like that.
What I want to know is if these games will have FPS controls improve upon the Wii's way of aiming. I hate the "hit the side of the screen, SHOOT SHOOT SHOOT...turn some more, PEW PEW PEW...repeat ad infinitum". It just gets boring (in my experience) after the first level. You lose that fast paced action.
@Pingles
theres nothing stopping you holding a controller in your hand.
@BigJayDogg3
For clarification, I know Move is camera based, but the implementation is different. They rely on both cameras as well as they gyros and accelerometers in the controller in addition to the glowing ball to track movement.
Natal uses the camera and it "interprets" what it "sees"
I did some project research for the voice command portion of Natal (it was a post on Craigslist called "gaming study"). The voice portion alone was pretty amazing. I think it may further change what people use their consoles for.
@InternetExplorer
Natal probably has a ton of potential, but as a gamer I'm MUCH more interested in seeing Nintendo's 3DS!
I've really been looking forward to this. Too bad Microsoft will lose out on that sale because of yet another victim of the Red Ring of Death. My Xbox is sitting there like a frigging door stop.
@InternetExplorer
I hope you know that motion controllers where first on the pc not on the wii so who's copying who here now.
also sony been working on the motion controllers for a while

@Drycell88
Its not about who started it, its about who popularised it..
All you people saying you prefer one system over the other:
You haven't played shit! So you can't prefer anything since you haven't played them. They aren't even out yet.
@dibs oddjob
no, but they can prefer the idea of one over another, the features etc.
@dibs oddjob
Um...yeah you can. They're two different approaches to motion control. I don't have to play with the Move to know I don't want to have to buy $300 in peripherals.
@InternetExplorer
youtube project natal debunked
Natal like controls for Windows 8 please. K thx.
And yes, I do want to wave my arms around like a madman all day.
@PlatinumSkeet If you say 'oh fuck' without pronouncing the 'h' your console will be turned off. Great.
Why does anyone even write negative comments on a product that they have never tried? It should be interesting to try a new idea, no matter what it is. Grow up trolls.
@phat007
Try this. Scroll up a bit. NO! Not too far! Yep right there. You see that "off" link. Click it. You'll never have to see another negative comment again.
@phat007
So wait, you created an Engadget commenting account just now so you could complain this one time?
Seriously?
@MastrCake
I created it right before i made that comment yes. However I didnt create it just for that. I get tired of people who judge things they dont know anything about. Once it is on the market and its in our hands...then fire away.
@BigJayDogg3
Negitive comments dont bother me as much as pre-mature judgement on something they know nothing about. Thats all bud, not trying to offend anyone.
@phat007
You have no idea the depth of the troll hole you just fell into
@Cy Starkman
No I didn't, but I do now. I will step carefully from here on out.
