Everyone, stop what you're doing. The day you've been patiently waiting for has finally come. That's right, the Engadget app is now available for the Android platform... totally free, of course. Can you believe it? Owners of Android 1.5 devices and up will finally have access to the unedited, unrestrained application, which allows quick access to Engadget, Engadget Mobile, and Engadget HD, podcasts, the Engadget Show, galleries, and more. Just as in the
iPhone and
webOS versions of the app, you've got full support for commenting, options to tip us, and lots of ways to share news with friends, family, or mortal enemies. We're also constantly updating, and we have plans for some changes right out of the gate -- like a homescreen widget that should be coming in the next version, so you can always stay on top of Engadget news. Keep in mind, we're still going to be cranking away on all our other versions too (the
BlackBerry and webOS apps have just recently been updated) -- so expect more good stuff coming your way. Okay, less talk more rock -- the app, er... prog, is available for download
right now from the Android Market. Go get it!
Things that need work:
Currently the app blocks out the notification bar completely! This is a huge usability no-no. No app should completely block out the notification bar. When a text message or email come in, I want to be able to see it and quickly look at what came in using the notification bar. Please change this Engadget.
Also when I listen to a podcast, you can't do anything else. So Engadget app is effectively not allowing me to use the multi tasking capabilities of my phone to stream and listen to music while doing other things. As soon as you press home screen button, the podcast closes and stops playing.
I've listened to Last FM all while using my GPS Navigation on the road and checking notifications like email and text all at the same time with my Droid. Why won't this app let me do other things too while listening to podcast?
Would love to have pinch to zoom on the photos or at least some way of magnifying at least one level.
Other than those gripes, this really is a great app. I gave it 4 stars on the marketplace till the above issues are addressed.
Nice, posting from my Dream right now! Kinda stupid that it shows the "loading" screen on the comments of a story just from changing orientation.... other than that, its gold.
OMG its a picture of a phone taking a picture of a phone (left)
@Adolf Hitler
Long time reader, first time poster, now registered mainly because of two reasons.
1. The app
I have to say Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!,
even though I've never seen great programming meeting bad programming in one app like this since Opera Mini ;)
It's fast, but there are some things (most mentioned already) that can easily be done better.
1. (already mentioned) Please review the apps lifecycle managment. Store the place the user had scrolled to in the comments, and please, please store what he wrote in the comment-form but didn't send yet.
By the way, this works when you were in the app and reopen it using the Sense Home-Button-Longpress-Menue (don't know how to name it properly) but doesn't work when reopening the app e.g. from the homescreen.
Also, please fix the reload-comments-on-turning-the-screen-bug
2. (already mentioned) There is a bug that opens the wrong comments or even articles when you where in the topics-section and go back to the latest-section.
3. (already mentioned) Please add an option to show the notification bar.
4. (already mentioned) Please make the engadget logo at the top a little bit smaller or let it scroll up with the comments.
5. (not mentioned yet, as far as I know) If I use a link redirecting to an other news on engadget, it asks me which browser to use...it should stay in the app, if a link links to engadget.
But, a really nice app, thank you, I will use it a lot!
Would be great if the app could remember which news I already saw
and which not, but I've got no idea how to integrate this smoothly into the interface. Maybe just a big black line above the news that where already online the last time I visited?
Reason 2 I registered:
I was quite shocked to see that you allow your users to take a name like Adolf Hitler. Maybe I'm a bit more sensible to this topic, cause I'
m german, but I don't think anyone should (or should be allowed to) wear the name of the murderer of at least 6 million(!) jews, who is also responsible for the death of at least 55 million soldiers and civilians during world war II, including over 200.000 U.S-soldiers.
And no, I don't think he just wants to make a fun.
@Adolf Hitler: Shame on you!
@FelixL interesting question. where should freedom of speech start and end ? as a famous french author (Voltaire) would say :
I do not agree with what you say, but I I will defend to the death for your right to say it.
@phearme
I think there is a difference between "I do not agree to this" and " I don't think someone should be allowed to say this in public without beeing told how stupid and against humanity it is"
Just downloaded this on my Sprint hero. I must say that if all the applications on Android were as well designed as this no other mobile os would stand a chance.
Please enlarge the QR-code, it's too small and unreadable. And it's not because of my phone, other collegues have the same problem with other Android phones.
@caoimhin
Had success with my HTC Hero by zooming it to the size of the hole screen.
Good job with the app engadget :)
Why can't I view anything "after the break"?
Seems to work
LOVE IT!!
Using it on my Milestone.
just dont realy understand why it needs to reload so long after orientation switch.
like when i slideout my keyboard.
So much faster then even my laptop. Thanks for a polished product.
SUPER
Weeee!
Whoo, thanks for finally getting round to it :)
Quite smooth, too!
Just ready to sell my hero on eBay so I can get the money up for a HTC evo.
no multitouch???lol
What's the point of the app? If going to the full blown site is better?
Thanks!!! Really love it!
Great but pretty laggy :/
Wow, perfect timing. I just got my AT&T compatible Nexus One a few days ago!

YESSSSS
Not supporting Tattoo???? :(
