Everyone, stop what you're doing. The day you've been patiently waiting for has finally come. That's right, the Engadget app is now available for the Android platform... totally free, of course. Can you believe it? Owners of Android 1.5 devices and up will finally have access to the unedited, unrestrained application, which allows quick access to Engadget, Engadget Mobile, and Engadget HD, podcasts, the Engadget Show, galleries, and more. Just as in the
iPhone and
webOS versions of the app, you've got full support for commenting, options to tip us, and lots of ways to share news with friends, family, or mortal enemies. We're also constantly updating, and we have plans for some changes right out of the gate -- like a homescreen widget that should be coming in the next version, so you can always stay on top of Engadget news. Keep in mind, we're still going to be cranking away on all our other versions too (the
BlackBerry and webOS apps have just recently been updated) -- so expect more good stuff coming your way. Okay, less talk more rock -- the app, er... prog, is available for download
right now from the Android Market. Go get it!
@KAL326 it's an ad. Sprint is funding the app
@KAL326 Saw that too and low rated the app...
Does engadget really need that extra advertising? I thought at least a big name app would be adfree ;(
@sweetelectro it Is ad free. It only shows the sprint logo on initial opening of the app.
Thank you engadget, I was waiting long time for this, but.... just got a "force close" when trying to reply from my Acer Liquid A1 :\ ..
Hope you can fix it soon.
Greetings from Portugal (:
Ahh finally, that was the only thing I was missing after my switch from iPhone to Nexus one
YEsssss! YEssssssss! Yesssss! Downloading NOW!!!
Posting from it right now. The opening screen was kinda confusing(looked like a loading splash screen but you're supposed to choose one of the pictures), figuring out how to comment wasn't totally straight forward, and changing orientation makes it load the whole thing over again(annoying when I just rotated so I could type my login in landscape and it sent me back to the comments section and reloaded the whole page). Aside from those, its great!
omg this app is so sexy
Yeah really
I wonder if they plan to have a 7 Series app as well.
@Blayze04
Does it have a fruit on the back?
Works wonderfully so far. Thanks guys
Found a bug.
If I go to a "Topic", example, "Handhelds", then I go back to "Latest", each item I click on is loading from the "Handhelds" section instead of what I clicked on
@pitnefor
Thanks pitnefor, we'll get this fixed in the next update.
@Eric W Update is in to fix this problem - just download v1.0.1!
I've waited so long. THX.
Thank you, Engadget! Posting from my Cyanogenized G1
WINDOWZZZZZZ MOBILEEEEEE....where is ittttttttt????????!!!!!! waaaawaaaawaaaa
Thanks for the app! I wish though, that the icon looked a little cleaner. The shadow on it is way to harsh in comparison to other apps.
@victorstuber also, (at least on the mytouch 3G) the top and bottom bars take up a heck of a lot of valuable screen real estate *Maybe the engadget logo could scroll up with the posts so that it is there, but out of our way when we dont need it*
@victorstuber
I noticed this too, all the surrounding apps look clear on the Moto Droid, the Engadget logo just looks grainy. Also, someone already commented on this but when you slide out the keyboard to comment, it reloads you back to the 1st page of comment.
This is an awesome app. keep up the good work!!!!
Any plans for a Windows Mobile 6.5 app?
bout time!
Figured you guys were waiting for 2.0+ to drop for all the devices still stuck at 1.5. Glad to see this come out earlier than expected! (Posted from my Sprint Hero)
Woot! My droid is happy!
I thought i'd post another thank you...this time from inside the app! I'm loving it!
awesome!!! thank you!! app looks and performs great! good job!
The wait was well worth it. What a terrific app! I wish your approach to content distribution was applied more often.
just installed. WOOT!
commenting on this story from my G1, works really well.
You should post a QR code that links to your app on the market.
@iRACK Appreciate you stepping up and saying what I was thinking....what do you think these jealous Droid owners are going to say when the proprietary binary program, that is ONLY loved cause Apple won't allow this old technology, achieves it GOD DRIVEN destiny and is replaced with a FAR better standard like HTML5?? If Android is a superior OS then why are there 15 versions of it? Correct me if I am wrong but isn't Flash Light what SOME of these God awful weird pieces of foreign plastic support? Come on guys, I know you hate Apple but OS X has no comparison....
@lsills81
You sir are an idiot, and you lack proper punctuation and sentence structure. I hate everything about you and people like you.
just pre-ordered my EVO 4G
Sweet. Maybe a bookmarking feature or so? Like so I can continue reading where I left of last time? So I can read all articles in the right order? That would be very sweet. Looks good so far though. Just this one feature and I think it has everything I need/want.
Nice ;) And the ability to stream podcasts and the engadget show makes it the best app prog on my magic.
'Bout time! :) Me and my Nex' are stoked!
Great ui.
Loved it on my itouch.
Now I can love it on my hero.
My G1 thanks you. (Yes, there are still some of us with the first Android device out there)
Finally!!! Thanks guys.
awesome!
Using now sweet!
Timely as always Engadget. Just as I bought an HD2 yesterday and retired my G1.
If you're going to post about your own Android app, it would be helpful if you also posted a QR code image to make it easier to get.
@Rubbinz Very good point!
@sweetelectro The good thing is, whySoSerious posted it in the comments back on page 1 of the comments.
Pretty embarrassing for Engadget to have to rely on a visitor to post the QR image to their own app in the comments.
Just made my day :)
Nice looking app too, particularly like that you hide the noticebar at the top, makes it look very polished.
My first post using the new app on my awaiting 2.0.1 to 2.1 Droid! Thanks Engadget
This is awesome! Simply awesome!
FEEDBACK
1. Comments that are down ranked into oblivion do not get automatically hidden!
2. No colors for highly ranked, highest ranked etc.
3. Can you add an option to show only highly ranked and higher? Sometimes the only comments I want to read for a particular story are ones that other people have ranked up.
