Geohot teases untethered jailbreak that 'will probably work on iPad' (video)
Is it April 1st already or does Geohot actually have something real to show? There's no way to be certain that what the self-promoting master of iPhone (and PS3) hacking is demoing is what he says:

Given his track record, we'll play along for now. The only thing we can say for sure is that the chosen music accompanying his iPod touch theatrics makes us want to break something, jailtime or not. See it go down after the break."The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models(ipt2, 3gs, ipt3), and will probably work on iPad too."

I just jizzed in my pants!
@Nerd With Out A Cause
Cant wait to see this thing breaking the iPad day 1
Apple fails before launch
@abedinthehouse right, but you still need to buy an iPad before you jailbreak it right? So I guess you kinda give it to the man in the app department right? but then your also hitting the pockets of some great developers which kinda sucks no?
@Nerd With Out A Cause
...and Steve Jobs just pee'ed in his.
@Stepup
Do you know /anything/ about jailbreak?
@viditbhargava This is just AWESOME!!! Finally a universal jailbreak, and untethered to boot! Geohot is a very reliable source, considering the work he had out there in the past (and still is available, although won't work with the current devices and 3.1.3).
He is not showing what the exploit is, and not releasing the code out there, so, Apple cannot patch the exploit, and thus, when 3.1.4 comes out, it is 99% likely that it will have the same hole that allows this.
What I don't understand is why Apple tries to stop Jailbreaking. I guess it's Steve Jobs being a control freak, because rational business thinking clearly tries to accommodate Jailbreaking as much as possible without actually supporting it, because people who want that functionality will then buy the hardware, and then Apple would make even more money.
So, technically, Apple is going against their responsibility to their shareholders by trying to stop Jailbreaks. Just think about that for a second.
@(Unverified) Apple tries to stop it because jailbroken phones enable piracy, which is affecting every commercial app in the app store, costing both large and small developers and Apple money.
@abedinthehouse day one, you called it. Can't wait to see another geohot pwn.
@Dreamwriter
Apple tries to stop it because when a device is jailbroken, it is no longer confined to their closed ecosystem. Apple is all about, and always has been about having a closed system. I've been a Mac user for 15 years, but I'm willing to admit and accept that it's just a part of the platform.
looks like he is giving us the finger.
@Dreamwriter Perhaps I'm the minority but I still buy and use app store apps on my jailbroken iPhone.
@RLBurkes
same here. I still want to support developers, I just like to multitask, have a 5x6 icon layout, and have emulators
Yeah, that's painful to listen to.
@b3ar What? Did you say something? My ears no longer work!
@b3ar
yes, and since the video maker liked this dumb thing too much, he let it continue to full video length, even as frames were not changing at all for nearly 20 seconds. I must have been to prove continuity of video, but the song is torture.
@b3ar
It's actually not that bad. The more I listen to it the more I want to... COMMIT SUICIDE!
@b3ar Engadget should have marked it NSFW just because of the music!!!
well this make the iPad at least slightly more interesting.
@kojo87
only if you can jailbreak copy, paste, and multitasking into it
..................so no?
@abedinthehouse Maybe I just failed to pick up the irony, since the iPhone OS has copy and paste out of the box and you've been able to get multitasking through jailbreaking since forever.
@abedinthehouse Multitasking. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_4DG3n4NOI
@Clancycoop
yes, the ProSwitcher app is fantastic on the iPhone, works very well and doesn't ruin my battery life that much. Heck, my girlfriend's Pre is not on par in terms of battery life when multitasking and that is supported out of the box, which should be implemented better.
This is proof that Apple was bullshitting us with their lame excuses for not implementing multitasking.
@BogdanGC Apple always keeps you wanting more...they leave out functionality for later releases and make people excited about stuff which even comes on dumbphones out-of-the-box. This is a strategy only Apple has been able to take forward. The rumors say it...iPhone OS 4.0 has multitasking.
@viditbhargava This tactic won't work for too long now. People are getting tired of it. As they say, you can't fool everyone all the time!
@who said what But you can fool some of the people all the time, and that's all they really need! It's worked for them for awhile, it will continue to work, I'm guessing. I know you are somewhat right though. My friend who has an iPhone and MacBook pro refuses to get an ipad saying, "it adds no functionality in an oversized case."
@abedinthehouse
Copy and paste has been in the iPhone OS for a long time now genius - get with the program.
@viditbhargava
Hate to break it to you, but that's pretty much how ALL tech companies work.
Better if you mute it.
um... so he activated the voice command then restarted the phone?
if thats all this kid needs to jailbreak an ipod thats actually kind of impressive. bullshit, but impressive.
@aceslick911 Voice commands is only on the iPod Touch 3rd Gen. and the iPhone 3GS. It seems he's saying this is a jailbroken one of those (it's an iPod Touch because of where the lock button is) and that he has an untethered jailbreak installed because he can just reboot it by itself. If he wanted to show it was jailbroken, he should've shown the Cydia app a bit more clearly though. I'm fairly sure it's the second app on the second page, the place it always shows up for me when I restore my iPhone, but you can't really see it very well in the video.
Side Note: Glad I have an early bootrom 3GS so I never had to deal with this tethered shit :P
@aceslick911 i think the interesting thing is that he got voice command on an ipod touch, i dont think that is natively installed. he already had it jailbroken in the video, hence the winterboard theme
@aceslick911 It's all part of the requirements for a "good" proof video: http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:video
@aceslick911
He was showing that it was a G3 IPT. the software is similar to blackrain according to his blogpost.
also he's been pretty much saying "Fuck off, im not working on an untethered jailbreak" for the past 4 months." Hell last week he twittered "The facebook page that says I am working on a 3.1.3 jailbreak is 100% fake. The only official sources are "On the iPhone" and this twitter." I wonder what changed his mind...
@flux Tethered sucks, believe me. I had my 3GS randomly reboot on me twice, in 3 months(not bad maybe), but both times,I was miles from my PC. Oh the pain, lol.
@flux : Doesn't the custom background show that it's jailbroken?
Very interesting!
honestly, jailbreaking is the deciding factor as to whether or not I get an iPad. i'm sure some official apps will be neat, but the possibilities of a jailbroken ipad are what really get my juices flowing...
@androoyang I couldn't agree with you more. When I first got my iPhone I was like cool. But after jailbreaking it I was like WOW!
she love my big ego
i mean, seriously.. what the hell geohot
yeah, i'm not really understanding where the "proof" is in this video. First it's an iPod Touch and it would be better demonstrated on an iPhone where he could illustrate the phone re-locking itself and then his untethered jailbreak by getting the unlock to run without connecting it to the computer. Can someone explain this?
@NikAmi I think he opened voice control to show it is an iPod touch 3g. He rebooted the iPod to show that the thing could retain its jailbroken features (special wallpaper and removed dock). This means that it is an untethered jailbreak.
@NikAmi It's all part of the requirements for a "good" proof video: http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:video
@NikAmi geohot used an iPod touch 3rd gen because if he used a 3gs there are two types, early bootrom and late bootrom
if he did use a 3gs people would accuse him that he is using the early bootrom and that the untethered jailbreak is fake
Me want for my iTouch 3G
Huh? What doesn't make sense in the video is that the background after he unlocks it is already different, meaning the iPod touch was already jailbrkoen. Confused. It doesn't really show how anything happens. The previous on the phone software update was the tiff exploit in iPhone OS 1.1.3 or 4. And that did actually install whatever the jailbreak app store was then (pre-Cydia.) But honestly, I'm happy without my jailbreak. :)
@cycomachead TIFF exploit was in 1.1.1, and it installed Installer. And no, you're in denial because iPhones in jail are USELESS compared to Android.
@cycomachead
you are a tech snob i you think iPhones are useless unless jailbroken. It's really not missing much dude. Multitasking is trivial when apps load faster on the 3GS than switching between open apps in Android. And Safari is still better than Android's browser. There are plenty of apps that are incredibly useful in the sea of garbage apps. I'm so sick of people saying iPhones are crap because of X feature it doesn't have, or because Android is open source. Big fucking deal. They are still nice phones, get over it.
Yes, the point of the video is just to show that it is in fact an iPod touch 3g that has an untethered jailbreak. The background on his home screens show that Winterboard is active, so it's jailbroken. The headphones are shown to show it's an iPod touch instead of an iPhone (placed on top). Voice control is shown to prove it's a 3rd gen touch. Finally, the restarting of the iPod prove that it's untethered.
The video isn't meant to show how, just that it's possible and he's done it. He will probably wait until after the release of the iPad, or next major firmware release for the iPhone/iPod touch to release this.
@CodeRed But the headphones are coming out of the bottom. :/
@cloud858rk
Hence it is an iPod Touch rather than an iPhone as previously mentioned.
