@iPad2010 A tethered jailbreak means that the iPod/iPhone must be re-jailbroken after it is restarted. This problem currently afflicts 3rd gen iPod touches & most iPhone 3gs', whereas untethered means that a restart will not wipe the jailbreak off.
But does it unlock? New baseband is still locked
Ahhh, so it uses some psp style hacks that psp developers probably found while hacking libtiff a while ago.
So you show it now so that apple can force everyone to get an upgrade and patch it?

The sad thing is that nobody will read all the comments to learn specifically why this is important (even if we don't know specifically which model of iPod touch he's using since there are 3 possibles)
- the iPod touch is already Jailbroken at the beginning of the video; his Home Screen has a custom background/wallpaper, not possible on a non-Jailbroken device
- he pulls up the Voice Control to show it's (potentially) a true 3rd gen model (the 8GB model is a 2nd gen one with a new bootrom only and it doesn't support Voice Control) - however there is a hack to get Voice Control working on *ALL* 2G iPod touches as well, so that's questionable
- a tethered Jailbreak on an iPod touch running 3.1.2 requires blackra1n to get it started again; if it's not connected to a computer with blackra1n on the reboot, it'll just sit there and be stuck
- he reboots the device and upon the reboot it does go all the way back to the Lock Screen, then the Home Screen, and then to what appears to be the second user screen where the Cydia icon is installed by default after a Jailbreak on a clean device
While I believe he's got it, and got it rather quickly according to what he's stated, I don't like it when people do such things flaunting it in people's faces this way. If he's got it, put up or shut up, else keep it quiet and say "no comment" like a politician.
Teasing all of us using 3.1.3 and not being able to Jailbreak at all and those running 3.1.2 that keep requiring a tethered reboot sure would appreciate it. If Apple patches it with 3.1.4 or whatever, we're not stupid enough to actually update to it.

My god why do some of you people think a little about the current circumstances rather than putting so much more thought into your doubting / slagging-off comments.
Its clear (to most) why he is demoing the untethered jailbreak and not releasing it at the moment. He is obviously waiting for the iPad launch which is only days away. Its highly likely the iPad has the same or similar bootrom technology deployed in the current latest devices.
One thing Geohot has always done is offer FREE hack solutions for those that want to play with their devices. He's not playing nay games with you the general public, only with Apple.

Yeah, i respect geohot for what he done in the past, but i also hate it when he shows off like this. he always releases things first, but blackrain, while invaluable, is still buggy and the cause of much cases of boot loops. redsn0w is more stable and bugfree but it is released way later. I'm using redsn0w now since i accidentally made my jailbroken ipodT 3g unbootable after modifying system files.
i suspect geohot does not care what the community wants or need, he just does it at his own whim and fancy, sort of a hobby of a hacker.
But then again, im waiting for this untethered JB, hoping the dev team could release a better form of it.

he is flaunting it to tell Apple to fuck off, and he's not putting it up yet so he can have either a day 1 jailbreak of the ipad, or he's waiting for iphone os 4.0 in general, so tht apple won't patch the exploit before those times come.
So there's plenty o reason to preview it before releasing it.

The problem with sites like this that just re-post video's, is half of the information is missing and you end up will dick heads or mis-informed people (like some of the comments above) spouting rubbish.
If you bothered to read the original blog post from the original source (link at the end), which is in-fact shorter than the engadget re-post but much more informative, you would realise that this video's sole purpose is to prove Geohot has a created a long awaited "untethered jailbreak for Apple devices that have the new bootrom installed".
That's why there are several simple steps shown to prove that the device is the latest iPod Touch with new bootrom, proven with the headphones, the voice command stunt, the rebooting whilst maintaining the obvious jail-broken device with the custom background and other hacks.
If you don't understand this stuff, do yourselves a favour and read up before you post idiotic comments that make you look stupid!
Sorry for the rant, but it p***es me off when people rant garbage about stuff they clearly don't have much knowledge about.

My rooted Droid has a wireless tether app... works on my unjailbroken iPod Touch and is the the only reason i'm considering the iPad

No I don't pay any extra fees. And I haven't heard of anyone else getting back charges either... although you might not want to be raping vZ's bandwidth just to be safe ;-)

NICE, so let me get this straight, if I have a 3gs with the newest MC thing, with 3.1.3, will I be able to jailbreak and unlock it in 2 weeks??? Or is this just for iPod touch? can i pay to get it faster...i'm stuck with a locked and no jailbroken iPhone for weeks... :(
