Google Voice is now your real-time pusher (on Android)
Once upon a time, Google undercut its own infant OS by offering rival platforms some of the best features of Android. Those days are long gone, and once again -- as much as we love Google Maps Navigation -- the poster child for only-on-Android functionality (in the US) is Google Voice. That's because as of this week, the Android version supports push notification of incoming messages in real time, as well as a neat interface for your reply (as evidenced by the above pic). Feel free to tease your iPhone and Pre-addicted friends, people; multitasking or no, they're not going to get a heads-up of incoming voicemail transcriptions with plain ol' HTML5.

Cool
@scrub175 it is!
@stueck indeed...very!
@scrub175
Wow omg I am soo jealous of my android friends
no I'm not.... iPhone still pwns.
@hbueain
That is painfully obvious due to the fact that your built-in automatic spell-check can't even figure out that "pwns" isn't a word, and hasn't been considered an acceptable term by the tech community for years...
(and no, your other unemployed WoW "friends" don't count)
Well to be fair, Google did try to release Google Voice on the Apple App Store.
@Kmobs
Yes, but like all things Apple, they wanted to control even when you pass gas.
I don't get why this is better than getting the email of the transcription pushed to your phone?
@mogren or a text msg. I am fine with the text method. That looks nice though. Of course I just "overclocked" my Pre to 800 MHz and have fallen in love all over again, so I can over look crap like this a little easier right now.
@Cringer I'm an 800Mhz overclocker as well. I prefer email to SMS because it doesn't get broken up into multiple messages and seems to come a bit quicker.
@mogren Since the email app is faster now at 800MHz, I will give that a try. The only way to go since Google made sure the Pre's best GVoice app, Gdial, wouldn't work a while back.
@mogren
The advantage of the real app is the little perks that just make your life a little easier. For one, it has the ability to play back the audio message over the phone's regular in-call speaker instead of the music speaker like it would if you were playing an mp3 in an email. If it's taking a few minutes to transcribe the message it'll give you the audio first and fill in the rest later. And if you want to use Google Voice for calls you can set up this app to intercept outgoing calls from the standard dialer and reroute them through your Google Voice number.
@Chefgon
get Youview, good app & can be setup for your GoogleVoice account too!! Love the 800 patch too! Fallen in love all over again
It's about time. Before this I was forwarding my Google Voice messages to my Gmail to get push notifications. Now I don't have to clutter up my email inbox.
Hmm crap
android is crap in the uk as most things are made for America eg: google voice
@Chrisdaly1 and navigation. I'm a bit frustrated by this too. Envy's not a good emotion.
(Sent from my UK nexus one)
@Chrisdaly1
Ditto. We need GV in the rest of the world too.
@Chrisdaly1
Yeah, I don't understand why google is doing that...it's not like they don't have the proper resources -- but I mean you gotta consider, GV and GM Nav are beta products...so I am sure they will have them in time, but that doesn't help you now of course. Yeah -- it sucks :P
@Chrisdaly1 it's pretty frustrating that there's no Google Voice or Turn-by-turn on my nexus one - but 'most things'? What else am I missing here?
@Marmite Turkey I know i will get flamed for this but I am an avid iPhone owener, an I believe they are the future... Everything is localised to your specific country, or can be via jailbreaking
I thought I noticed my battery life (on my android phone, my acer liquid A1) suddenly improved. It must have been the google voice update.
I however am not seeing the new UI stuff in that picture. Maybe the UI stuff isn't for android 1.6 devices.
@mikedep333 I think you're right. I'm not seeing it either but I am getting push notifications now.
Its great that Pre's can O'c as well as Driods! How did you guys do that? I have a great friend on twitter who has a Pre, I would love to share the o'cing love! Running the Driod @ 1.2 ghz. its a beast. Dont really care about battery life. Any thing is better than my old shitty iPhone 3G.
@arsshaw
head over to PreCentral.net
they have stories on it & the forums have all the links & instructions.
The WebOs homebrew community is some of the slickest & well organized I've seen for any os platform... God I love webos
Now for UK support...
@fpad77
I read this and thought "Yeepee At last" then realised it was your wish not a statement!
Ah well
I'm just so happy to see how sharp Android looks in version 2.1.... well done Google. If only you can find a way to make the bland dark grey menus look a bit more attractive (and the media player app, and phone app)
@TareG
Have you seen the 2.1 photo gallery app? It's fantastic. I suspect that 2.2 (or whatever comes next) will have a similar makeover for the music player and possibly other built in apps as well.
@Chefgon
It's v.v.nice, even though I wished that 3D effect would appear on swiping across many photos, instead of at the start screen where it's just a gimmick.
All it needs is a # to indicate the number of unread messages/voice mails. I love google products!
Hey, thats awesome!!... ohhh wait, thats right, I don't have google voice because I didn't get an invite. I got a wave invite!.... but that turned out to be largely useless. oh well.
@AthleticNerd if you go to the Google voice site you can request a GV number. Can take a few weeks, but you'll get one.
@dietrious I did that, even used my gmail account to curry favor, no dice.
@AthleticNerd
i'll send you an invite. what is your email address
@Jbe3rd daklimaszewski@gmail.com hopefully this doesn't open up the spam gates haha.
@AthleticNerd
Invite sent, enjoy.
for everyone else.. that was my last invite :(
@Jbe3rd Awesome, Thanks man! To think they turned off commenting for a while, it has good uses other then fanboi wars.. and even those can be entertaining.
I was wondering why it no longer had an option to change how often I wanted it to check for new messages. I could actually start using this for text instead of my actual phone # an stop paying for unlimited text.
Am I the only one here who thinks Google Voice is still very buggy and the transcript feature is pretty much useless?
@who said what i mean useless in its current state.
@who said what
buggy? How so? The transcript feature is hit or miss, I've had it be spot on. It's usually good enough to get the gist of what is being said.
It fails horribly with my non-native english speaking friends/family though. But when we come up with software that can cut through 30 years of Korean accent, damn, that is a kick-ass piece of software.
I need a Google Voice invite. Anyone got one lying around?
@NaJaKwa You can request one from google
https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/
Uhm? They've had email notifications forever now, what is the difference? You can even respond to an sms from one of the email notifications. Combine that with Activesync (Gmail supports full exchange now, except task syncying) and it's just as good.
Dumb article.
Not sure I understand. The GV client has always pushed voicemails and texts on my Droid. What's really new?
@dietrious
Before this update the Google Voice app didn't have push, the quickest you could get notices was 5mins. Of course Google Voice could be configured to send notifications to your email, or to your mobile number via SMS, so this isn't a huge thing, but it is nice.
Ah OK. Never noticed it had "lag". Thanks for the clarification.
Now only if I could get Google voice to work on my Droid. I looked into getting this to work last nice and it kept telling me "Your phone number could not be verified. Please try again". This happens after I enter a 4 digit voicemail pin. Now I don't know if this is because I have to have a google # or what? I really don't want a whole new number. My Vz # is just fine. Not sure what to do,
@Camdog916 Check www.google.com/voice to see whether you are already signed up or not. It will also tell you how it works.
@attilag78 I clicked on the link and it takes me to Coming soon: google Voice and I guess you have to be invited to it. So voice isn't even public? That doesn't make sense to me. Why have it on all Droid phones if you can't even use it?
