Sony intros four new made for iPod / iPhone headsets
Sony's already kicked out some decent looking PC gaming headsets this month, and it's now followed those up a new batch of 'buds (and one set of over-the-ear headphones) that are "made for" for your iPod or iPhone. The earbuds come in the form of the DR-EX300iP, MDR-EX38iP, and MDR-E10iP, which pack either 9mm or 13mm Neodymium drivers, along with in-line controls, a built-in mic and, in the latter two cases, your choice of two different colors. They're joined by the DR-V150iP headphones "tailor-made for DJs," which pack the same in-line controls and mic, along with a 30mm ferrite driver that promises "deep bass and generous power handling." Of the lot, only the MDR-EX38iP is available now (for $40), with the rest due out in May.

"tailor-made for DJs,"
HAHAHAHAHA*gasp*AHAHAHAHAHA
@New Reformation There is an over-the-ears variety shown in the images, I assume that's what he's referring to.
"Made for ipod/iphone"
Equally HaHa
I wonder if they will work on a Droid?
@bartman
The call button will but that's it
i know these will play for ipod but will they work for mp3??
@fanfare You mean alternative MP3 players? Likely not.
@fanfare "will they work for mp3??" Aww... Aren't you as cute as a button!
@fanfare
MDR-EX38iP worked fine with my Zune 30. The volume control doesn't work though. Its an ipod/touch only feature.
@fanfare the headphones will work its just that its highly unlikely the controls will work on other mp3 players.
@Luxury Guy
lol they put the control line at the back where the ground is so doesnt interfere with anything nice call
@fanfare
I'm sure the mic and the click button will probably work on blackberries as well, but volume button def not
@fanfare
are you Sarah Palin?
@fanfare
They will only work with ATRAC
SONY headsets are the best! I love to see them finally releasing iPhone models.
@Jimbojones To be fair two tin cans connected by twine are better than the embarrassments that ship with the iPod and iPhone.
They look normal.
@friendly0ne There is a mic in the volume control, I believe, similar to the apple design.
TTTT, these headphone's are pretty sick!
I wish they'd bring back earphones with short lead + extension. Saves so much tangle.
@bjs They exists. Shure makes 'em.
@bjs SonyEricsson makes them as well... if you want a cheaper option than Sure. Just look for X1, X2, or X10 earbuds.
@bjs Please no. I'm 6'5" and can't put a player in my pocket with those short headphones.
Four headsets and none of them is wireless?
@Exbloder Sony already have plenty of bluetooth models.
Why aren't there many manufactures make just the remote+mic extension cable? Shure has one, but it's the old iPhone style (only the 1 button), and it doesn't work "properly."
As for these Sonys, can anybody tell me whether they're y-style or neckchain? I hate y-style, but alas they're back in popularity thanks to the stupid iPod stock bud.
Not sure about the other three, but the MDR-EX38iP has at least been available since early January. I bought them during a trip to South Florida at a Best Buy. They sound great like a lot of the other Sony earbuds, but definitely don't hold up for very long.
Just a warning to those people who've bought any or are interested in Sony premium earbuds. I've had 4 different sets (each a different model number) fail on me within 2-3 months after purchasing them. One of the ears goes out or faintly produces sound. The same thing happens each time. I tried to RMA these MDR-EX38iPs, but I lost my receipt so I was out of luck. I'm not hard on the earbuds or yank the cord or anything like that. I just use them to help get to sleep.
Thought I'd share my experience with you guys for whatever its worth.
@thephased
I'm not hard on the earbuds
I just use them to help get to sleep.
I'm not trying to be a wise guy But If your wearing them to help You sleep , How do You Know your not hard on them..
@ThinkpaxX200s
Good question. I guess I forgot to mention that I stop using them before I actually fall asleep. I just take them off when I get tired.
@thephased
yeah keep the receipt cause the soldering isnt too good and they are hard to resolder those micro specs
"If your wearing them to help You sleep"
YOU + ARE = YOU'RE
@thephased
Good to know. I had some Shure E2s but the cord failed after about 5 years (okay, the first pair I had failed after 6 months and were replaced under warranty).
I'm using Sennheiser CX300s but the fit isn't so great. Got some Klipsch S4i on the way with in-line remote and mic. Looking forward to having earbuds with the convenience of the mic and remote for travel when I don't take my BT headset. Love the functionality of the Apple earbuds, but the sound is terrible, I've only used them 2-3 times in 8 years of owning various ipods.
Hey SONY how about a MADE FOR PSP GO version??? fuck apple.
These look nice...
BTW, does anybody know if the controls and mic on these will work with the Nexus one?
@pika2000 This is a clever troll. I approve.
@pika2000 haha... troll or not, the answer is kinda. Most phones seem to work the same with the mic. I know BlackBerry headsets with the mic and button work on the iPhone, so I'm assuming vice versa. The volume rocker probably won't work.
Coyote speaks the truth
@grayskul I'm not trolling. I've seen reports that the iPhone bud works on other phones, so just asking.
I've seen one of those models on sale at Target... was considering them when my stock buds died, but it turns out Apple covers earbuds under the iPhone warranty so they were happy to give me a new pair.
I use the stock earbuds for the gym and walking around (so I can still hear). For more isolated listening, the Apple in-earsare hard to beat. If the higher-end sony buds are $80 or more, just go with Apple. They are dual-driver, not something you find in the
@Coyote
Are you using the stock earbuds or the Apple in-ear? Hard to tell from your post. The article says the Sonys start at $40. You're right that most in-ears don't rock dual drivers at the $80 pricepoint, but I've never heard the Apple ones described as best-of-breed. I haven't heard them described as overpriced, but I don't think they're anything special for the price either.
I've had a pair of MDR-EX38's since november. They're pretty good, sony-like sound (lots of high and low), but definately a good buy if you want iPod controls. On the down side: they leak sound more than they should. People around you will hear what you're listening to, especially your partner if you're listening in bed.
@okeribok PS. another con: bad choice by Sony to make the leads symmetrical.
Hey Sony. Nobody cares about you anymore. I don't have anything Sony in my home. just memories of an overpriced brand name.
@socritic
r u kidding me nobdy cares bout ps3 and vaios and their blu ray!? i have everything sonny from my tv to my alarm clock stupid ass! and overprice brand name? and apple isnt? really
I'm not a fan of the stock Apple earphones but they do allow me to hear ambient noises while driving and such. I first switched over to the black earbuds made by motorila for the Rckr and they worked well til I accidently wen over them with a lawn mower. Then I switched over to the black Sonys and loved them just as well. I'm not a fan of white wires since they scream out "I got an Iphone!!!" and I feel like an Apple drone lol. But as others said the Sony came out a few months ago.
Does this work on iPod Shuffle 3G?
@enterneo Yes. Actually, some of the models are designed for iPods as they don't have mic (just the control buttons).
