USB mass storage support coming to Xbox 360 on April 6th
We had a pretty firm idea that this was happening, but now Major Nelson has gone and made it official: mass storage is coming the Xbox 360 at long last. There will be a system update on April 6th, which will allow up to two simultaneous USB flash drives plugged into the system, which will be capable of storing profiles, game saves, demos, "and more." The maximum size supported is 16GB, and even though regular USB hard drives will be supported, they'll be up against the same size cap, and performance will suffer as well. You'll have to manually format a USB device for use in this way when plugging it into the 360, but Microsoft will be partnering with SanDisk for a branded drive in May that will come preconfigured. Also tweaked is the new memory management screen (what convenient timing!) which should make shuffling around these files less of a chore. Check out some screenshots below.

good
@tajam 16gb fail.
@Bowsa you don't have 32GB stick, so zip it
@tajam
External hard drives will be capped to 16GB and slowed down as well... FFS! Epic Fail!
@Prokanda Hey it is at the least a step in the right direction.
@tajam
Yeah, so good that it doesn't even match what's available for the PS3 out of the box. Epic FAIL
@joebob Very true that this is a step in the right direction. It may not seem like much now, but this does open wide open to a non-MS non capped HD solution in the future. If they can do it with any regular old flash drive or USB HD, why not with a traditional 2.5" in an adapter.
@KAL326 Funny how PS2 was the peripheral king, and Xbox was seen as just a PC. Sony and MS completely flip flopped this generation.
I hope Sony continues to stay standards compliant for here on out.
@tajam
Wow. I've been doing this with my PS3 for years. I thought memory cards were a thing of the past.
Get with the program, Microsoft!
@tajam I'm a 360 fan till the end, but this right here sucks major balls. I'm sorry but 16gb is just pathetic. What's the point? Well it's something is better than nothing. Might as well get raped for 250 gig.
@bigsofty i guess we will have to keep streaming our content through wmc...
@tajam
I'm just worried that because it doesn't say anything about arcade games, downloadable content, games on demand, or installs that you won't be able to use USB storage for those- which are the things that you'd need immediate additional storage for first.
@shaze21
The point, in my estimation, is to give you the ability to go over to your friends house and bring your savegames with you while simultaneously making the system restrictive enought that you're still forced to buy overpriced hard drives from MS.
@joebob
It may be one step in the right direction, but it's two steps back for putting a 16GB cap on it.
Heck, they've been marching in the wrong direction since day one when it comes to storage on the 360. $99 for a dinky 60GB hard drive? Are you kidding me? That's half the price of the console itself, not to mention, I can get a 1.5TB drive for that price.
This is why I don't plan on replacing my dead 360.
I wonder if the rumored slimmer 360 will support USB 3.0. If it does, then I doubt performance will "suffer" like it's stated in the article. Either way, Ill be glad to keep my data on a separate source to free up space on the HDD.
@TheHeretic
Doubt it's still pretty expensive and has no real reason for it.
@TheHeretic what's with that 293GB HDD... is a 320GB xbox 360 HDD coming out? Or is it already out and I was just living under the rock??

pal :)
@coolpal I am wondering that myself. I wonder if the new xbox 360 will allow you to install your own 2.5" drive.
@viewwin More than likely they will just keep increasing the size over time like they have been doing through prepackaged drives. Though I would hope the next jump would be to 500GB, but those drives are more expensive than a 320GB. Also makes you wonder why if they were planning on going to 320, why did they even bother with 250GB...but now I'm just rambling.
@coolpal could it be a Dev machine? I think those had larger HDD's
Finally, now they just need to add support for External 1.5TB Hard Drives,
@OCEAN CLAK they do now... just that, you can only use 16GB out of it... no? :)
This is useful, but why is there a storage cap? Especially if you can stream from your computer which could have an infinite amount of storage connected to it.
@harpy Probably to make microsoft some crazy cash in proprietary hard drives.
@sweetelectro
And the proprietary USB they will start selling soon
The maximum size supported is 16GB.....bullshit!!!!!.......16GB is nothing!!
@Antiapple
It's 16GB more than you had yesterday.
@Antiapple I still have a 20GB drive, and the system files take up a few GB, which means this would double my storage. I actually have no space to install the MW2 map pack on Tuesday, so it's too little to late for me (I'll probably have to uninstall MW2 from the HDD).
@itchyeyes
Did nobody else notice the free space left on Major Nelsons HD?
@Antiapple It's 16GB more than anyone had when the 360 first came out, which is when this whole thing should have been announced. Soooooo behind the times, M$.
@BigD145 Because 16GB flash was available and affordable in 2005? Um ...
I just can't wait to be overcharged for a MS/SanDisk USB Drive.
@Superevil
or microsoft's "specially designed for the xbox" memory stick.
@Superevil: since you can use any 16GB flash drive, wouldn't it be your own danged fault for buying the overpriced branded one? ;)
@Wiggy Fuzz
Isn't that what Superevil just said?
@Francis L4D It's worthless to me anyway, I've got the Elite and I still have 100gb free.
why they call it xbox 360 ? because when you see it you turn 360 degrees and walk away
Ummm think about that one
@wupolo
Hah, you sir get +1
@jdm28690
Really?! *shakes head*
@jdm28690
Voted up for the lulz!
@jdm28690 A better analogy might be that a good number of people turn away from xbox (180 degrees) as they have problems, only to turn back (another 180) and return to the platform. About the only way I can see why some people stick with MS when they suffer over 6 RRODs (fifth and hopefully final for me, now using arcade falcon and hasn't died yet...)
@jdm28690
You IQ is very much under 9000!
@wupolo
If he's dumb enough to write something that stupid, do you really think he'd get what's wrong with his statement if he actually did think about it??
@jdm28690
''why they call it xbox 360 ? because when you see it you turn 360 degrees and walk away ''
yes you turn 360 degrees and walk away with an X-box.
you should of said 180 degrees.
@OCEAN CLAK
you guys are all wrong. it's a meme btw.
http://images.encyclopediadramatica.com/images/1/1d/360_moonwalk.gif
@jdm28690
You mean, you turn and keep walking towards it? Dumdum...
Sony saw the Nintendo 64, turned sixty-four degrees, and deviated to the right.
"Microsoft will be partnering with SanDisk for a branded drive in May that will come preconfigured" ....At a cost of $70, no doubt. I don't begrudge any company from turning a profit on their products or services, but when you give your customers a choice between using their own memory sticks/hard drives or buying your offering at a huge price difference, then you shouldn't be surprised when most people take the former.
@TheBennettBrigade
I agree, but there will still be idiots who buy the branded drives because they don't realize there's no difference between a branded and non-branded drive. Parents buying for their kids see is the word "XBOX" and they buy it, not knowing that 3 aisles over they could get the same thing at 20% of the cost.
