We'd heard buzzing for some time now around the internet that Apple planned to sell its
iPad in more than just its own stores, and usually the name Best Buy was mentioned in the same breath... but now we've got some photographic evidence. The above shot comes from what looks to be an internal memo from the big box retailer, not only stating that the stores will be getting the iPad, but that they'll be getting the iPad
on launch day. Now, there's no way for us to confirm that is 100 percent the real deal, but
we speculated this could be coming back in mid-February, and there's lots of corroborating evidence to suggest this is no joke (such as COO Tim Cook
explicitly mentioning the device would be sold at Best Buy) -- we just didn't expect to see it day one. We're digging for more info on this story, so stay tuned.
Update: Best Buy's iPad playbook is certainly looking legit at this point. Our tipster sent us another two screenshots (they're after the break) showing off BB's new retail display which includes the iPad. Interestingly, they also tell us that the iPads are set to be delivered to stores on the night of April 2nd, and that quantities will be limited to about five of each model on launch.
TUAW has also just published
more of the playbook if you want to head over there and check it out.
Who pays $79.99 for an app?
@Physicsguy89 I did (once) for an advanced app for pilots that gives us the FLIFO we need to make accurate flight plans. It was a bargain compared to the cost of the desktop version. I was doubtful of it at first, but it ended up a great deal.
@Physicsguy89
People who want to use Office and iWork.
@natels
Oh, yeah, haha. That was stupid of me.
@natels
Oh wow. I thought iwork and office are built in the iPad.
@Physicsguy89
APP = AppleCare Protection Plan
@iSkippy
Ohhhhh, hahaha. I'm an idiot
@iSkippy But the AppleCare plans are S...
Like the one for the iPad ($99) is S3791LL/A
@iSkippy This is BBY, so no, that's not applecare.
@natels
iWork is $9.99 a piece for three apps, which are purchased separately depending on which you need, totalling $29.97. I don't know if M$ will have office approved and if so, how much they will gouge their customers- as usual.
@bullshitexpresscom ” experience the web ” well kinda like through your iphone but bigger… Umm I hope all the sites you love drop flash.. Well maybe wait 5 years then this will be the best web experience..umm except technology would have 10x surpassed this by then… Hey we don’t want flash ads just our own iads …matter of fact pay us 130 dollars extra and really experience the web..but don’t forget to pay at&t 30 bucks a month… But just wait incase that didn’t sell youyou can read books.. And not like a pdf but the screen will actually move like a piece of paper with animations.. But hold on have you ever seen a digital magazine?? It’s kind of like ..well.. Oh it’s kinda like the magazines actual website it has videos and interactive media.. Just like a website.. And you know magazines get put out much more frequent then the actual info does on the net … Oh wait it doesn’t.. But don’t just google the information you want ad watch the video on youtube.. No sir buy the magazine.. Revolutionary!!! Except not being able to do everything you already do but on a tablet.. And no keyboard and half your favorite sites not working.. But look instead of all this free stuff you do on the net just buy the apps that do the same thing .. Yeah just give me money for free things while we throw iads on top of them and get paid ….”steve jobs conscience “
@SoManyPhones
You do realize that iPhone users are more likely to browse the web and use web apps than all other mobile platforms in the US combined! So flash isn't hurting iPhone use. In fact pandora app is far better than the flash version... Same for YouTube. The iPhone is for people who do stuff with their device. Not hoarde it like jewelry. The ipad will similarly do well. You're an idiot because you don't know iPhone users use the web more, not less. Next time think before you write.... Or just read!
@think before you react
Unless Apple wants to deal with a shitstorm, it will be approved. And if the price is steep, the people who do buy it will be the ones who REALLY need it, and wouldn't be surprised if it was bundled in the MSVL in the future.
Price gouging or not, if you pay full price for ANY MS product, you're an idiot.
@Physicsguy89
Who knows?
Were still waiting in the UK for the usual apple exchange rate dice game they play with us, will it be double or 1$ = 1£ ... I am sure it will be a bad joke as usual!
@natels But that would be too costy, wouldn't it? Anyway, I'll reserve my judgment for the iPad until it comes around. Opinions: http://bit.ly/ipad-verdict-viewed
@think before you react
I don't plan to use the pad for heavy work, but I'm stoked about the iWorks word processor. Apparently you can import Word files and export to pdf and doc. Not bad for a ten-note
@CTTHosting Yes, that is AppleCare. S3791LL/A is an auto-enroll AppleCare part, Apple doesn't make auto-enroll available to their resellers so MC595LL/A is most likely a boxed AppleCare for retail stores. iSkippy is right.
@staticjethro
You thought MS Office as built into the iPad.
Seriously?
Hang yourself.
@staticjethro
Why did they downvote you for that? Office/iWork SHOULD be build into the iPad. It's such a rip off
@bullshitexpresscom
Hey, what was the name of that app? I've been looking for professional flight planning, but have one found a few $3 gimmicks.
Thanks
Well that's a surprise.
Yeah.
Would you like to buy the extended service plan with your purchase today? Even if it gets crushed by a steam roller, just bring it back for a brand new one. No questions asked.
@FrankTheCrank
They are all lies!!!!
SWEET!
I can't wait to try one out in person before I buy 2 of em.
Apple App for iPad is how much!?
I can buy TWO now!!
@iPad2010
I can buy NONE now!
@iPad2010 You could have bought two even if they weren't going to be at best buy.
I honestly still don't see the appeal in this device. At least, not at the price. Make it $300 max and I won't feel so bad letting it gather dust on the bookshelf a month after I buy it.
I still say at that price go and buy yourself a real laptop or a net book and stop giving apple your money for over priced pos's like this...
@onlymyrailgun
He doesn't need our money to do that, with his money he could afford to pay for cancer treatments 100 times over.
@3dpenguin
Let's hope he gets it 100 times then to put some of that money to use.
@onlymyrailgun
Seriously.
Who cares! We are over this icrap thing!
@Lord Vader
Vader just disowned his son?? *gasp*
@Lord Vader
Oh and don't worry, he's probably that idiot Chad Vader's illegitimate son...
@Lord Vader HAHAHA now that was funny
its smarter to buy at BB than at an apple store, because if you change you decide you don't like your shiny new iPad, you won't get hit with a 15% restock fee that Apple charges on returns.
@dave1812 Good point. But one point towards the Apple Store is better customer service who know the product. I haven't been in BB for years though, so the Apple service might have improved. But God forbid you have to deal with those "people" at Geek Squad for a return.
@bullshitexpresscom
Why you need customer service that knows the product? It's a big ipod..what more you need to know?
@dave1812
My routine is to go to the Apple store to get my hand-on time with their devices, because they let you play with their devices without any pressure... then I stroll over to Best Buy or Future Shop to make the purchase, for their return policy and rewards. If I were to buy a Mac though, it'd be from my Campus Bookstore, as BB and FS don't do the educational discount in store, and Apple Store has that previously-mentioned 15% restocking fee.
@bullshitexpresscom
I only mentioned BB as an alternative to Apple. I don't much like BB and rarely go to their stores. And yes, support IS better at an Apple store--I got them to exchange some defective units, over the counter, with brand new retail boxed ipods.
Over time, the iPad should be available just about "anywhere" like the Touch.
Would just want to play with it...I know people will be flocking Apple Stores and Best Buy to take a look at the iPad (including me)...but still I won't spend 500 on this.
"APPLE APP FOR iPAD" - iWonder what that is?
@Putzy09
APP = AppleCare Protection Plan? ($99 at Apple, so $20 cheaper through Best Buy?)
@MarkS22 - Ah, of course! Well then, that's not too bad.
I was wondering who the hell would really pay $80 for an iPad app.
@MarkS22 This is BBY. That's not it.
@egloskerry Do they not sell AppleCare at Best Buy? That's weird.
@egloskerry
Yes it is. I worked at Circuit City and we sold BOTH Apple Protection Plans via a shrinkwrapped box or the in-house plan.
Make no mistake, Best Buy will offer both and try to bludgeon you to death if you attempt to walk out of the store without one. "Sir, lightning will strike that iPad and kill your kittens if you don't have a protection plan on it!"
Go away Luke, you are no son of mine
