CyberPower, Digital Storm and Maingear add NVIDIA Fermi GPUs to flagship gaming PCs
Origin PC kicked things off on Friday by shoving NVIDIA's latest and greatest into its Genesis desktop, and now a few more in the custom PC game have upped the ante by offering a similarly delectable taste of Fermi. NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 470 and 480 have been all the rage over the weekend, and if those raucous benchmarks have you convinced that the time to buy is now, a trio of system builders are here vying for your attention. Digital Storm's Black|OPS rig can now be ordered with a GTX 480 (starts at $2,891), while CyberPower is giving prospective customers the ability to add the latest Fermi GPUs into a smattering of towers. Maingear's formidable SHIFT supercomputer is also seeing the update, but it's really asking for trouble with a triple GTX 480 configuration that demands a minimum investment of $6,199. In related news, ASUS, Zotac and a slew of other GPU makers are cranking out new boards based on the minty fresh core, so you shouldn't have a difficult time finding one if the rest of your rig is a-okay for now.

$11718 for Tri-SLI? Count me in...
@aznofazns Cheaper than my $20,776.85 mac pro configuration with # 4x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB. Just Sayin.
@nullifie
True, but it's mainly the CPU and RAM that make that configuration so expensive. The 4 GT120's "only" add $450 to the base price. Which is hilarious, because GT120's are a joke.

@nullifie
except the macpro can do things like dual quad cores and 32gb of ram, it's a work station not a gaming computer so you really can't compare the two
@aznofazns A good system, built by yourself, with Tri-SLI GTX 480's would cost not much more than $2,500. An i7 930 OC'd to 3.6, a decent HSF, decent 3x2gb low latency DDR3 1600, just over $300 for a good 1200W continuous PSU, $80 for a 7200.12 1TB hard drive, around $200 for a proper case...
Of course, if you want a boutique PC, you're going to pay five times more.
@Smurf
You would also get a warranty and a phone number if something happens...
I'm sick of all this "building a PC from scratch is always better" bullsh*t...
@Kevin6432
You do get a support, and a warranty, but only on individual parts.
The only downside is you have to figure out which part is fucking up on your own.
Also, building a PC from scratch is better.
@Kevin6432
But you get that with warranty though so what can you say about that now?
Hmm, i cant thing of a single game thats currently out that needs this much power. Im still using a duel cor 2.66ghz chip with 4 gig ram and a single geforce gtx 260 and it plays every game i have tried at 60+fps on 1920 x 1200 with full specs. Games include TF2, supreme commander 1 and 2, WoW, Eve. I guess people are still trying to pump more out of crysis?
@sdpagent BFBC2 doesn't run so hot at 1920x1200 on the current cards.
But I Can Teh BuildZ It 4 Ha... oh what's the use
If I get one of these rigs then I will not pay for heating. The heat from those monsters is enought to heat up my bachelor place!
@hero785
my rig has just one 5870 and it gets my room hot fast lol! I would die if i had a rig with 3 cards lol!
@SeveringGecko
Yours is just hot..One of these rigs will be Hot Hot Hot Hot!! Get it, really hot enought to channel heat through the whole house I guess lol.
omfg triple SLI config. I just came
My GTX 285 hits 90C sometimes.. Imagine three of them. My computer would 'splode.
Is it me, or is the computer in that picture lying on its front?
@AaronX No. This is a new trend in high end cases. The cables come out the top, but are covered by an enclosure. It gives you much easier access to your ports. I love it.
I'm not sure that's what is going on in this picture... but that's exactly what it looks like.
@AaronX
Thats Maingear's custom case design for their Shift systems. better airflow.
@BookishOwl To be clear, the case is made by Silverstone for Maingear. The Raven (01 and 02) and the Fortress (02) share the same motherboard orientation, if you're looking to upgrade your case.
@BookishOwl
I thought that was the layout from Silverstone RV01,02 and FT02 case, I heard silverstone supply case for maingear.
Here's a challenge to GPU maker, make those desktop gfx more powerful but smaller and super low wattage in 2D application. I can always wait til next year.
sorry I can't hear you over WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH
5 years ago i used to care about these gaming PC's. Now im happy with a laptop for 1/5 of the price.
GTX480 raped the Quadro FX 5800 (the best card for media professionals at the moment) based on tech specs at a fraction of the price! nvidia's charging us more...for being professionals??? The only difference is the firmware~
it doesn't even need to compete with ATI in the gaming market to earn profits...they're already earn more by selling pro cards...it's like 1 quadro = 5 geforce profit!
@orien2v2 In the professional segment, performance is not the main metric, reliability enters the purchasing consideration.
A very fast machine, which keeps crashing leads to down time, which is wasted money for any professional. In the big scheme of things, a couple of thousand dollars investment in equipment which generates orders of magnitude more in returns is a no brainer.
If you can't understand that, chances are that you are not in the "professional" segment of the market.
I must have this installed in my G5 immediately!
/playah
I didn't even know there are psws powerful enough to run 3 GTX480 out in the market or is it custom made?
I'll stick with my 5870, I wouldn't want to downgrade to fermi.
$exy.
Sure is pork shoulders around here.
