European Milestone gets OTA 2.1 update, Droid update MIA
Motorola Milestone owners, your moment is now. The Android 2.1 update you've been waiting for is now available en masse. Users outside of Hong Kong (which already got served) have received notice that an over-the-air update is available to unlock the nine home-screens, Google Earth, and other goodness that comes along with the latest flavor of Google's mobile OS. When can US-bound Verizon subscribers hope to get their point release of goodness? That, sadly, is still TBD, but we're guessing it'll be any day now.[Thanks, Miao]

Thanks a lot Verizon.
@rhimbu i like verison. im rilly into this phone except its totally unattractive golden sheen button looking thing.
HTC EVO > Moto Droid/Milestone.
@Almo
A lot of phones that are coming out in a few months are going to be better than phones that came out a few months ago. For example I can almost guarantee you that "nexus two" or "HD3" are going to be better than HTC EVO, and that "nexus three" or "droid2.0" are going to be better than "nexus two" or "HD3". What's your point.
@rhimbu I stopped waiting and rooted this weekend. Great way to stop caring what VZW does with the update. All the goodies of 2.1 and then some :) (SS2.2/CheyvNo1's 1GHz lv kernel.)
@virtual I just looked that up. If verizon doesn't get this out soon I am for sure rooting and flashing to that ROM, looks great :D
@virtual I did the same last week and I'm really glad I did. I used DroidMod 1.0 and am really happy with it. It's the tamest ROM I could find with just the 2.1 updates plus a couple extra's like wifi tethering and overclocking.
I'm glad Motorola is taking this long with the update because otherwise I probably never would have rooted and flashed.
any month now. c'mon
Hopefully the update for the droid comes sooner rather than later
9 home screens?! 2.1 only has 5, right?
@Marmite Turkey
the verizon early build that leaked of 2.1 had 3 homescreens. i'd personally like it if they let you set how many screens you wanted, like helix launcher
@Marmite Turkey
I've read that you can set how many homescreens from 3, 5, 7 to 9 homescreens :-D
@Marmite Turkey You can change between 3,5,7,9 on Milestone 2.1. It's so awesome!
@Marmite Turkey
Yeah I was wondering about that. So I take it it's a Milestone thing only?
Also, does this actually apply to Canada, i.e. Milestone on Telus? Or is this European Milestone only?
@2late2die European milestone only. You CAN flash to this ROM, but you wont get 3G because they have a different baseband. This means it's useless for Telus and Bell users.
Ya know the funny part... I got the droid so that I wouldn't have to wait for whatever chump middle man company to port the android OS to their proprietary wrapper..... seriously, what the hell??? How long has it been since the 2.1 release??? And who can I blame for this legendary level of dropping the ball on this?
@RowdyReptile I would blame yourself
@petebob796
haha, true, good call.
@RowdyReptile Root it and install a custom rom and then overclock. That is the true beauty of Android
9 homescreens? Did I miss anything? Or this is Milestone-specific?
@attilag78 i've got a beta-quality build of 2.1 running on by samsung spica, and i have all 9 home screens. this isn't milestone-specific.
sidenote: don't get the spica. the touchscreen accuracy is terrible, and i don't think the touch controller supports multitouch. i may be wrong though. it does have an 800mhz processor which makes it feel really really fast.
@TWiT Commander Thanks for the info! The Nexus One has "only" 5 homescreens, that's why I thought that this is specific to the model.
9 screens? That would be a welcome improvement. Still waiting verizon!
Does anyone know if Canadian Milestone owners are seeing the update?
@carsonb I'm still getting can't connect to server here in canada. I don't think ww are supposed to get it til Q2 though.
@carsonb
I feel like I'm waiting for the Miletone's release all over again. No info, just eager anticipation.
@ProfKOS its still better than the hero. I switched from the hero to the milestone because I got tired of waiting for any and I mean any news regarding an update. At least with the milestone I know its coming, its just a question of when. PLUS 2.0.1 is 20 times better than 1.5. No, a MILLION times better. Hahaha.
9 homescreens??? Man, I'm glad I don't have to worry about that much screen management with my Droid... :(
@jamo
You can choose between 3,5,6,9 homescreens.
@ce782138 6 would suck, you need an odd number for centering.. I am running 5 now. Seven would be perfect.
Still getting "Server unavailable - try again later" here in Holland, so you're not missing much.
@Avex depending on what milestone you have you can update it since a week now (through USB connection). Just use the motorola software.
@ce782138
Does not seem to work with the UK motorola milestone yet :-(
Who in their right mind needs NINE homescreens? I'm lucky to use two.
In either case, I'm glad I rooted my Droid...
@SuiXide Those who haven't figured out how to use folders.
Server unavailable - try again later here in Germany, and via moto software still no update.
Where's my update? =0 I have a milesone in the UK and no update yet. Guess I have to play the waiting game with everyone else
I checked about 90 minutes ago (Germany) after reading that article that says: ".. it will probably take a while before it is available in all countries" so I'm not holding my breath. Server is getting hammered and other countries got this last wekk, so it could take a week to roll this out in Europe.
And...check that link in the article - I don't think it's valid for most of you!!!
Looking forward to Google Earth, mostly.
No OTA in Germany, the linked File is the .31.-Version
Now i get the msg from the phone that software is up to date. Oh well... could be another week from today!
Do yourself a favor and root our Droid. Been rooted since day one and I have been running 2.1, OC'd to 800 Mhz, multi-touch, tethering, etc... Screw VZW and do it yourself. Much better outcome anyway.
@Darkseider
Unfortunately that doesn't work for the Milestone - which what this article is about. We have a signed bootloader = no overclocking.
At this point it feels like they're just rubbing it in :-/
What I don't get is if some guy in his basement can get 2.1 working why can't a multi-billion dollar company. Seriously, just get it done. Lazy lazy lazy.
Add me to the contest. I just hope that good office document support is added at some point. I would even love ODF formats for it.
I gave up on Verizon/Motorola. Went back to AT&T and got an iPhone 3GS. Just tired of BIG REDS BS.
I wonder if Canada was included in that update.
@samjjordan
Not sure. I've got the Telus phone but the update server is showing 'can't connect' (it used to just say I was up to date'. Either means there could be one or averyone else in Canada is trying the same thing as me...
Just root your phone and install 2.1 already. It honestly takes maybe an hour if you are computer illiterate. I am running Smoked Glass 6.0.1 with the processor overclocked to 1.1ghz. This phone is amazing if you just let it do what the components allow.
