Palm isn't hot on Pre overclocking, indicates warranties are at risk
You know the hacked Pre firmware releases that have been coming out lately, first for 1.3.5.1 and then recently for 1.4? We tested out that later one and found the results to be good, and indeed one of the creators, caj2008, sent us plenty of data from early testers showing minimal heat gains and battery losses. Still, Palm isn't exactly thanking these guys for their hard work, going so far as to issue a warning:
Frankly you can't be surprised that Palm isn't thrilled about users cranking up the clock multiplier on their phones, nor can you think less of the company for indicating that those doing so might face some warranty issues going forward. And, as we've said before, despite all data that these mods are safe users should exhibit caution before dialing up the megahertz. After all, you wouldn't put a manual controller on your turbo'd car, double the PSI, and then try to get your blown headgasket warrantied... right?While we appreciate the effort the webOS community has put forth to try and help us along that path, the use of this application is neither endorsed nor recommended by Palm and will likely result in a voided warranty.

@bhtooefr
People have pushed the OMAP3430 to 12500 Mhz on the Droid so in theory, the Pre should be able to run that fast too.
@JXCGunrunna
Ability to run at that speed isn't generally in question for most of the shipped units, ability not to die within hours or days is. :)
The question is, will Palm know if you overclock the Pre? That's the main issue for warranty replacement request, whether Palm would know if you did overclock it or not.
the fact that palm actually has a link to this mod on their website really means the warning is somewhat side lipped and a CYA measure. I'd like to see the 800 mhz pre vs the 3GS now. I feel it woul kick some apple. Not that it didn't already....
Zero probs thus far on the 800. Installed battery temp patch from Jason Robitaille just in case.... Go getcha some!
They can take my 800MHz patch when ... my Evo shows up ;) Seriously, if no new Palm/webOS hardware soon, my Pre only has to last until "summer" ...
I LOVE this patch! The phone was amazing before the patch despite less responsiveness than the iPhone. Now, the phone is snappy and quite responsive. I love the phone and Sprint's Data Plans are much more reasonably priced than any other carrier.
From a geeks's perspective, there isn't much better in the world than after market tuning that yields something for nothing. That's why I bought a Phenom II 555 - to unlock two cores for free, over volt and OC to ~4 GHz. How satisfying is it to pay $89 for a processor that transforms into a 4 core monster with a few tweaks? Now magnify that by 10 since OC'ing a phone makes a ginormous difference in the overall experience and UI responsiveness and you have something to covet. WebOS + 720/800 MHz = AT&T needs to hurry the f$%k up with the Pre Plus. I have an iPhone now and all I can think of is 400 MHz, and it makes me sad...
@felipedeeznuts
if you have a 3gs you're running at 600 and capable of 833 without calling it overclocking. And you only need 600 for a fluid UI. Meanwhile we need 800.
@anus1220 Are you really gonna compare the non multi-tasking, super- simplistic, just plain meh OS that is iPhone OS to WebOS? The only reason WebOS isn't ruling the mobile world is because Apple didn't make it. Also, you seem to be ignoring the thesis of my statement - playing with sh1t is fun. Apple doesn't let you play with sh1t and still play nice with the almighty App store.
@felipedeeznuts
Have you actually seen the palm numbers? Android murdered it. Rim, yes RIM?!?! jumped 60% in this quarter over same quarter last year and Palm keeps falling in market share!
My Pre overheats and runs the battery down just fine without a patch to make it worse.
