Let's start with the obvious proviso here, the above image is so painfully easy to fake that even our computer illiterate grandparents could mock one up within a few minutes. That said, it's purportedly a screenshot of a little oopsie by Google's online store, which is said to have briefly displayed the Verizon option for
Nexus One handsets as available to buy for $199 plus the relevant contractual shackles. We wouldn't normally credit such unverifiable information, but then we're also hearing from
Soft Sailor that a highly trusted "inside" source of theirs is reporting that Verizon-carried,
Sense-less Nexus Ones will be out and about "by the end of next week." Given that the
earlier mooted date of March 23 has now come and gone, we're apprehensive about investing too much of ourselves in these rumors, but those supposed CDMA Nexus One
shipments from HTC have to come out and play at some point, right?
[Thanks, Carson]
Update: jkOnTheRun has more insider info to share with us on this topic. James Kendrick's people "in positions to know" tell him that the Verizon Nexus One will definitely show up in April, which meshes with the Spring timeframe we've already been given, but there's also word about a "surprise" that other US carriers lack. Whether that refers to Sense-related enhancements or some other software optimizations, we'll have to wait and see.
So... this just leaves Sprint, right?
Oh, who cares? I'm excited for the EVO 4G. That's the only phone on my radar at the moment, unless Sprint somehow picks up the HD2, and then I can get a ported version of WP7 on it.
@r34p3r
its not gettin released on verizon. i kno
@r34p3r
im really surprised Google doesnt throw the N1 on all the carriers at the same time! why not?
if Palm had released the Pre everywhere at once, they prolly wouldnt be in deep doo doo now
@r34p3r
The EVO does seem like the best phone in the world, but it's just like the once-great iPhone: awesome phone on a terrible network.
@jamo
Sprint is not nearly as bad as everyone says.
I haven't had a dropped call in almost a year's timespan, and that's traveling all over, even places that only have one bar.
And when in doubt, I roam for free on Verizon. So, your commentary doesn't really matter here.
You don't roam free on Verizon as a Sprint user. When you're roaming on Verizon, you're using up minutes and mobile-to-mobile isn't in effect.
Go read your contract.
@Elranzer
unless its charging you extra, its free
@jamo I used to have Sprint, and they were ok, it was the hardware that was the problem (Touch Diamond). I wish the EVO would come to Big Red though...
How about a subsidized Nexus One on AT&T? I'm due for a new phone, don't want to play in Steve Jobs's walled garden, and stuck on AT&T, so there's no advantage to NOT getting a contract for me. Right now the iPhone's the only game in town for us Ma Bell-ers. You Verizon folks have all the luck.
@Smart People Play Tuba
AT&T seems to locks down all the Android phones they sell, I don't think google would let that happen with the N1 so I don't think it will ever be subsidized by AT&T.
@blindguymcsqueezy
One can hope, at least. Maybe if the Backflip fails miserably, AT&T will learn their lesson.
Looking at the AT&T website, my only options are a Blackberry or an iPhone. This sucks. Guess I'll continue to wait for the Pre Plus.
@Smart People Play Tuba that's how I felt so I sold my 3Gs and $29 later I had my Nexus one ordered. I didn't have to sign a contract or anything. I like how Google is selling this phone. Att is really good where I live and the 3G with that snapdragon processor tears it up.
@Smart People Play Tuba subsidized phones shouldn't be offered anymore, they give the carrier too much control over the devices which use their network.
Man I was waiting for the VZW Nexus One all this time, but now that I hear about the EVO 4G I'm torn. I might just buy the VZW Nexus one off contract and wait for the EVO, then sell the Nexus One
@bucwylde23
You and me both, that's exactly what I was thinking :D
My contract with Verizon ends in February (I have a dumbphone for $15 a month or something ridiculously low like that) and I've been using an unsubsidized G1 on T-Mo as my main phone for the last 2 months. Even though the service where I live isn't so hot (barely get Edge and no 3G at all), I love Android and I really enjoy flashing roms and themes. I'm curious to try out Sprint since it's cheaper per month than Verizon and I'd roam Verizon's network for free :D Also, I'd get an EVO...mmmmm....
The "roaming on Verizon for free" is a myth. You're using up your minutes when you're roaming on Verizon.
@Elranzer
I roam on Verizon's network all of the time. I have never been charged MONEY for my time on their network. It is free.
@Elranzer
Well yea, you're using your minutes. It's still free to use Verizon's network: http://cellphones.about.com/od/roamingpoliciesbycarrier/qt/sprintroaming.htm
@bucwylde23 Isn't not being locked into contract wonderful :)
I just read the N1 might come to Korea. Anyone know how this rates versus the Motoroi (what's the other name for it? Milestone maybe?).
@juanvaldez Actually, I guess the Motoroi doesn't have another name, I guess I was confused.
@juanvaldez If you're talking about the Driod, it's called Milestone here in Asia.
@joshl No, I was talking about Motorola's Motoroi, I thought it had a different name in Europe, but I was confused. Thanks though.
Too late! Sprint EVO or HTC Desire. Verizon missed the boat. As for your trusted and reliable sources, WHAT A JOKE!
So is this one going to have that same screwy screen that the T-Mobile version has??
TOO LITTLE TOO LATE VERIZON ! KEEP IT !
what happened to the Incredible? Nexus One won't sell unless google puts it in stores. There is just too much solid competition out already and even more on the way. I think there are a dwindling number of people who will dump their money on a phone based solely on specs without getting to see, feel, and experience the phone themselves
@dswatson83
Thats what I want to know! Big red has nothing to lose by announcing these phones.
@dswatson83 I expect that is what the "a 'surprise' that other US carriers lack" is .... it will be in the Verizon stores, where it is not in any of the other stores.
At least, I hope that is part of the "surprise"
lets not even pretend this is real.... Verizon wouldn't allow google to post this without stating the minimum plan for it or a link such as Tmobile. Some kid just copied the sentence from the Tmobile description and slapped on a different price.
With the HTC EVO 4G coming with a front camera, it's almost as if Google announced that Android will support video calls, via Google Talk, Gmail chat, or Skype.... As much as I absolutely adore the Nexus One (even more than the EVO 4G, which I think is a tad too big), I won't be dishing out any cash for a 2010 phone that doesn't come with a front camera....
For all those waiting for the Nexus, skip it! I have no idea how this thing can be a success.
Got mine for AT&T Friday, today is Monday and it's going back. Alot needs to be done for it to work, the screenvis nowhere near as responsive as the Fruit phone, and is absolutly useless outside as well. Touch sensitve buttons are horrible, and the ear piece volume is a straight joke. In an empty room the volume is still low, imagine every day normal use. And to be honest, I like sense on top of android a whole lot better. Plus the whole order through Google thing suxxxxx!
My advice hold out for the Desire, and that sexy beast the EVO! Both will be running a new version of HTC sense and look pretty Awesome. I would learn towards the EVO cause it's similar to the HD2, which i love, and has a more friendly ever day screen material compared to that of the Desire which uses the same technology as the Nexus!
Ehh, VZW can keep that incredible! Especially since the word is that the Amazing Snap Dragon has been underclocked to 700! What a rape on speed and performance..
@Sean76
So many things wrong with your whine-fest.
1 - The Desire has the same screen and same earpiece as the Nexus, so out goes your griping about said items. If you hated them on the N1, you'll hate them on the Desire.
2 - My N1's screen is sensitive to the slightest contact. I'd suggest if you don't return it for another phone, contact support because you have a dud. Same with the capacitive buttons.
3 - I had my old Touch Pro and Nexus One outside at the same time. They both sucked. The AMOLED-Sunlight bandwagon is stupid. The HD2 and EVO will have the same inherent issues because ALL current AMOLED devices have them. Oh and get used to that ish because everyone's moving to AMOLED before they get Super-AMOLED, unless you're Samsung.
4 - The earpiece is loud as shit, I have zero idea who you can't hear it.
5 - Sense is available via Modaco's firmware, which also gets you root access the himem kernel, and undervolt. Everything works with the exception of flaky bluetooth. How did you not know there was no SenseUI BEFORE you bought this phone if it were such a dealbreaker?
6 - If you were apprehensive about ordering through Google, why did you bother? You're going to have to eat a restocking fee when you return the device.
Doesn't even fly.
@Level 5
My whine fest? Look at yours u clown! And no the Evo does not come with an AMOLED Mr know it all, so u do your homework! And do a search on low ear piece volume, it's well documented. And i did call Google support, they said there working on a fix for the WELL KNOWN LOW VOLUME issue.
Even further, who wants to deal with sending stuff back and dealing with Fed Ex, when I could just sit back and wait for some better products to hit the stores this summer.
Enjoy your Nexus Mr know it all : )
@Level 5
3. Both the HD2 and EVO have TFT screens.
@Sean76
As for the Incredible being underclocked. That's completely bogus. The processor doesn't work that way. It is not available at lower clock speeds. It does however automatically scale the processor speed based on the current load so if it's not fully loaded and someone were to check the current clock speed it could show lower then the rated speed.
@MacBandit The Acer Liquid has a snappdragon underclocked to 768, and you might remeber the droid shipped underclocked as well. Something that I was thankfuly able to remmedy.
@MacBandit The Acer Liquid's processor is binned at 768MHz and has a rather hard time getting to 1GHz.
@reallynotnick
That's correct my friend
Yawn. How much longer before Engadget realizes that Android phones are a dime, it that, a dozen. I am curious to learn if the Verizon Nexus One ships with Yahoo, or better yet, Bing search and services.
Hahaha. So much fail.
@Ariel Bender
The last three words of your post are so ironic.
Prepare for oblivion.
@Ariel Bender
Yeah because Bing is awesome?
Bing is light years behind Google. Google understands what I want and brings it to me. It's been learning what I want and how I ask for it all those years back. Bing is just another search site that blows in comparison.
@Ariel Bender
What's wrong with variety? Seeing as the Nexus One is the highest speced phone on the market, I am not seeing the problem?
@Ariel Bender
this idiot has his carriers mixed up, he definitely had at&t in mind when he wrote this post, although oddly enough, there are no bloat-ware filled versions of this phone, at least from what I've heard.
That looks fake, the radio button has slightly different shading than the others.
If others saw this (I looked on google dot com /phone this morning and didn't see it) - I would be more inclined to believe it.
Saving my monies for the HTC Incredible, whenever that comes out.
By "Next Week" they mean this week.
The Soft Sailor post was dated on the 24th.
Get ready Verizon fans, Nexus One should be out this week.
Hopefully not on April 1st! because I won't believe it :(
April 2nd.
Nexus One is too late now. Wish sprints network was as big as verizons cause Evo kills the nexus. Sprints 4g isn't announced in Orlando, Fl yet either so I wouldn't get to benefit. The Evo is awesome but only a select few will stand to gain with its purchase, primarily those with 4g in their area. Everyone else would be better off with the larger network of verizon
