Windows Phone 7 Series screwed and chopped onto HTC Touch Diamond (video)
If there's any better argument for rigid spec requirements for Windows Phone 7 Series hardware, it's this video of an HTC Touch Diamond running the OS at an especially syrupy pace. Indeed, the lag is so severe that it could very well be some trickery in the form of a RDP client running on a 7 Series emulator, which is in turn running on a PC -- which, now that we think of it, is a pretty good possibility. Whichever way they achieved this feat, it's certainly not a recipe for a viable handset. But we do know that these sort of "ports" are only going to increase as time goes on. See for yourself after the break.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Sure enough, the author of the video has fessed up that this is an RDP hack job -- in other words, it has absolutely zero bearing on how WinPho 7 would actually perform in some post-apocalyptic future where it's been successfully ported to the Touch Diamond (that being said, we certainly wouldn't be surprised if the herky-jerky action ends up being just about accurate).

Desperate punks.
@ashleythehottiest Hah how true. I guess we are going to see a lot more of this in the coming months. HD2 was worth it, maybeee this isn't..
@ashleythehottiest What sorcery is this?!
@N900
I Guess the stylus is back
@ashleythehottiest
I hate not being able to watch youtube at work!
@ashleythehottiest
They must really be desperate indeed, this is not even the the last incarnation of the Diamond, this is the very first version and my geez, I can't explain how much I hated that phone.
I had it for less than a week before I replaced it with the first HTC HD , with which I (like aanybody who used it even for a short time ) fell desperatedly in love.
Since last september its place has been taken by the newer HTC HD2 which in my opinion is as near to perfection as a cell phone can get.
Since for business I am forced to carry another phone I also have an HTC Hero, and I'm willing to recognize that Android is a superior OS, but as a full package (hardware + software) the HD2 is still unrivalled and way above anything I ever came across (which is something) and with its new iteration of Sense UI it seems to me that it miss W7S just as much as a worm may miss new shoes.
This week I will receive the HTC Desire that will take the place of my Hero and I really hope and look forward to being duly impressed, in fact I already have put my Hero on eBay, but for the time being I'm holding tight to my beloved HD2.
HTC has really come a long way since that little irritating Diamond 1 ; as my french mom used to say: "Chapeau !"
@ashleythehottiest
What? You think this is cool?
Well I've got Windows 7 Ultimate running on my HTC HD2.
Check it out...

@OCEAN CLAK
No! No more stylus PLEEEEEASE!
@ashleythehottiest It's running RDP like this One: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZovb8onH-g
Really Engadget? I tipped you on news about how the Nexus One's screen doesn't really display 800x480 and you approve this?
@Supraman
Maybe Engadget is still figuring out how to alert its delicate user base to this travesty.
@Alex
Well if your being sarcastic then ill tell that the link I provided was very interesting to read. I can care a less about the actual resolution cause its still higher than most phones out there and its OLED.
@Supraman
Provide it again...
@Supraman
It's hardly a secret. Here, I'll post the link to shut you the hell up
http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news/2010/03/secrets-of-the-nexus-ones-screen-science-color-and-hacks.ars/
@hfm perhaps they did because your tip was wrong. It is entirely dependent on what you define as a pixel, if you define it by a single point on a display then the N1 has a wvga screen, if you define it by 1 red 1 blue and one green sub pixel (which is WRONG) then sure it had less.
It displays 800x480, it just has a third less sub pixels, this is done to give the LCD (specifically blue subpixels) a longer lifespan.
@Supraman
You tipped them about a story you read on Gizmodo
WELL DONE !
@fourthletter +1
@Supraman you sir, deserve to hear a whole Miley Montana Thing album as punishment for online vanity.
Dang, she looks a bit ugly here. (windows phone 7 and the other one...)
why the music vid?
@daytripper
'sloooowwww perfooooorrrmaaaaancceeee"
@daytripper
'cause Mr. Flatley has a crush on Miley? XD
@daytripper
When a song is "chopped and screwed," it's slowed down and chopped up to bits. They posted the music video as a joke, to display their inspiration for developing that headline.
Both them videos scared me
Yes, you get it...remote desktop...
Wow. That second video was definitely not needed.
@fr3z3rburn Very unnecessary.
I love how Microsoft will not do the upgrading, forcing the community to do it. Well at least the community knows what the users want!
Looks like a Pentium 1 trying to run Win Vista lol
@Lord Vader
FEAR LEADS TO ANGER,ANGER LEADS TO HATE,HATE LEADS TO SUFFERING,SUFFERING LEADS TO THE DARK SIDE.
I can see why... but why?!
My pentium 4 is faster than your core i7.
@jdm28690
Your Pentium 4 is faster than a blow heater at cooking bacon but thats about all.
Actually, the chopped and screwed remix sounded a lot better than the original, but I can't say the same for the phone.
huhhh is that me or there ia a second video with a pic of miley cirus in it?
what is it for *__*?
somebody hacked engadget?
The author already admitted this is just RDP..check the youtube comments.
@jalapeno
I loveee jalapeños
WHY?
@Lord Vader
Maybe a lightsaber in stead of a stylus will help you Lord Vader.
Might be worth mentioning that this isn't even pre-release yet of WP7S. That and the fact that is an extremely early port, running on hardware that is 2+ years old all might have something to do with the sluggish performance.
It's articles like this that I just don't get. Instead of showing how cool it is that someone was able to (presumably) bootstrap software that isn't even released yet onto a device never intended to host the application we get the "look how slow the OS is" post.
You can get Android to run on some REALLY old phones. It's slow too. Why not post those articles and discuss how sluggish Android is?
@bjsguess the article mentions that there's a reason why windows phone 7 series has such a strict spec requirement. it isn't bashing the OS, just showing how much it needs newer hardware in order to run properly.
@DaveHazard
That's my point. This article is about how slow WP7S is on this hardware. Yet, there is absolutely ZERO evidence to suggest that WP7S couldn't run on the Diamond. It's just way too early to make those assumptions.
"...that being said, we certainly wouldn't be surprised if the herky-jerky action ends up being just about accurate."
So, even though the editor knows that this isn't running a local version of even a pre-release of WP7S the assumption is that if it were real it would perform kind of like this.
If this were an isolated WinMo slam then no biggie. Unfortunately, this "assumption" is just another put down in a long line of put-downs on this site.
@DaveHazard this shows nothing, the hack implementation isn't optimized. The comments on the article just rub it in even while including disclosure of such info. This is just the revisionist intent after the HD2 video got out there. Wait until they get proper video drivers and then these sorts of articles will look as dumb as all that BS about the HD2 not being able to "cut it" and run WP7S.
I wouldn't have bothered!!!
"...now that we think of it"?
Give credit where credit is due, Flatley. Some xda contributor thought of that, not you.
I already have a Lightsaber stylus out in the market. You can buy today at only $300 per part. Bargain. Some Assembly may be required. Real Life stylus not included.
I have some GREAT land in South Florida for sale if you're interested Engadget...
now why didn't microsoft let the hd2 be upgradable?
Can someone please tell me what the point of this is? Your hair will turn grey by the time this thing renders anything.
hahahaha miley cyrus hahahaha that shit sounds better than the actual song hahaha
