AT&T's 24Mbps U-verse broadband hits 22 new states, 120 new markets

Maybe you're sick of waiting for FiOS, maybe Time Warner or Comcast have rubbed you the wrong way, or maybe you just really want in on that mobile DVR action AT&T announced last week. Whatever the reason, if you're interested in U-verse the Max Turbo broadband service now available in 120 new markets across 22 states. That entails maximum download speeds of 24Mbps with 3Mbps upstream -- less than half the maximum speed offered by Verizon or most cable companies, but its cost of $65 per month actually makes it quite competitive against mid-tier broadband plans. What AT&T hasn't said is exactly which new states and markets can now join in the fun, but there's an availability checker on the site that will quickly tell you the good or bad news.

@draftdubya
I am pretty happy with RCN. It has only gone down once in the two years I have used it. At least that I am aware of.
You really get a raw deal in the US. In the Uk I pay £10Pm for broadband. That's what $15 for 20meg broadband with unlimited downloads.
@Rodgers86 : Yep that's what I was gonna say.
I thought I was paying too much for my ADSL2+ connection here in Belgium, but maybe I was blinded by the offers made by French ISPs (across the border, they get 100Mbps net + TV + unlimited phone calls on landlines for 30€/month).
Now 24Mbps/3Mbps for 65$ is way too expensive IMHO.
I really need to move out of Iowa.
@Dandmcd
hey man, at least we live in a decent state. Beats illinois traffic laws, i'll say that.
Willing to be none of those 120 will be where I live.
Ah yes the broadband vacuum of Texas..
@Flaystus
They don't even have my address (or any address in my town) on file - I can't even get a "we don't service your area" error; I only get a "where the hell is that?" error.
Texas, I hate you.
pft. I get 30 Mb/s with Comcast's mid tier and an aftermarket DOCSIS 3.0 modem
I don't know what country they are calculating averages, but where I live in NY State, TWC offers 10Mbps for ~$40/mo and 15Mbps for an additional $10. Not that I'd personally be willing to pay $65/mo for internet access (unless it would work for all of my computers, consoles, and devices!), but half of that price and half of that bandwidth is still cheaper and faster than what I get raped with.
Phoenix gets absolutely no love from U-verse. Wah! Wah!
Not that I was looking for this, but it is not in the Philadelphia area.
Comcast and Verizon will eat this service alive.....
@shizbgby
What? You'd rather deal with bandwidth caps and BitTorrent throttling? You'd rather hook your TVs up with the single worst connection method ever invented?
@jgp I don't have any issues with using BitTorrent and I torrent daily. Comcast is not the best but it gets the job done.
Worst service roll out ever. You see advertisements everywhere but its still unavailable for most the area. This type of promotion should be illegal.
This is a rip off. I am in Charlotte and on the 18 Mbps plan and yet hardly ever get above 10Mbps. These a**holes need regulating!
$65 for 24mbps/3mbps? I pay $30 for 30mbps/7mbps with Time Warner.
@tkrow21 yes, but do you actually get those speeds?
@tkrow21 Where do you get 30/7mbps for $30 with Time Warner? The cheapest option for me in San Diego is $51 for 10mbps. That's why I've stuck with Uverse 10mbps for $36. My only complaint with Uverse is the ping time, which is always between 50-60ms.
@tkrow21 That's Odd. Timewarner doesn't provide anything faster then 15MB and even that is not $30, not even in a bundle package. It only claims to hit UP TO 30MB because of speed burst. These bursts usually last a few seconds and harldly ever peak out.
I Pay $55 for a 25MB package from cox in San Diego. That's before the burst crap. Timewarner is WAY behind and one of the worst cable companies out there. Their HD also looks horrible.
@tkrow21 That has to be a 6mth promo rate and those are "PowerBoost" speeds. This is 24/3 all the time and you actually can use the bandwidth. I have 18/2 now and can pull down all of that from servers with enough bandwidth.
@tkrow21
dude, central New York State, we have two main internet packs available: 10Mbps for $45ish, and 15Mbps fot $55... Where the FUCK are you getting a deal like that? Furthermore, why are we getting raped so hard?
I have Bright House Road Runner Turbo in Clermont, Fl. Speed tests always say I get 30 down and 2.5 up no matter what time of day and what test sites I use. I only pay $45 a month. Maybe I'm lucky though.
We get it here in Chicago. Be damned if I get it though, I'm still trying to get my parents to spend the extra 5 bucks a month going from 3 to 6 :/
Hey, I like it. I don't have the option of Verizon here, plus they're halting their roll-out for good. U-Verse gives me decent speed with NO COMCAST CAPS. I upload and download large amounts of data (above 250gb a month) and U-Verse just handles it.
As others have noted, still not available in my area as well. I called them up and basically was told that it will get here in the next 3 months.
At least the price for the 18Mbps dropped to $55 instead of $65. You have to call them up and request to get the new price though.
Don't bother with AT&T, you won't get close to their advetise speed, inface AT&t is getting suit for not delvier the promise speed, eversince AT&T took over SBC, it never reach the promise speed, you better check what is the minimum speed becuase they often gave you that instead.
@techlord Pretty close for me. I did this 1:22pm US Eastern Time Zone, which is about peak business hours. I got 16.41 down and 1.47 up. Not bad when my connection is rated at 18 down, 1.5 up.
Figure out a way for me to not have to pony up for a box in front of each TV in my house and I'll consider it.
BTW - I have AT&T DSL currently - when will I be able to just get the ISP portion and not the sorry TV portion through Uverse?
LOL 65 for 24 mbps...LOL i pay 100HKD (13 USD) for 100 Mbps in Hong Kong and is Fiber to The Home...
Have they solved the problems with the terrible latency yet?
Do you have to buy U-verse TV to get the higher speeds, or is this just a branding thing?
@ModernTenshi04 You have to buy uverse tv to get uverse internet period.
@LEDfoot Bullshit, you have to pay an install fee to get Uverse internet sans TV. You can however get internet only on Uverse, I have had it for over a year that way.
States covered:
Alabama Arkansas California Connecticut Florida
Georgia Illinois Indiana Kansas Kentucky
Louisiana Michigan Mississippi Missouri Nevada
North Carolina Ohio Oklahoma South Carolina Tennessee
Texas Wisconsin
The list carefully bypasses most of the major cities in the north-east...
Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida
Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky
Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada
North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee
Texas, Wisconsin
Are the states they have listed on the site with U-Verse availability.
No thanks to U-verse. I'll never consciously go on an interleaved path. It's truly unfortunate AT&T chose the cheaper route of going FTTN, instead of FTTP like Verizon, meaning you're still using a copper-wire with error correction to access the 'net. Enjoy your higher latency, folks.
Gaming is compromised on U-verse's service, no matter where you are. Even regular browsing is affected, considering it's an extra 32ms/hop or so.
Makes me grateful for my 20Mb down 1.5Mb up Insight Cable internet for $50 per month. Central Kentucky is a nice Oasis from Comcast...
I'm holding out for google
God I wish we had this where I live, stuck with verizons crap ass 3.5mb down/ 300kb up, and no plans for fios anymore.
I'd be happy if AT&T ACTUALLY rolled this out. My little suburb is mentioned by name in a 2007 press announcement and I STILL can't get U-Verse today.
Addresses outside the AT&T U-verse service region will be shown as not found. The states currently included in the service region are:
Alabama Arkansas California Connecticut Florida
Georgia Illinois Indiana Kansas Kentucky
Louisiana Michigan Mississippi Missouri Nevada
North Carolina Ohio Oklahoma South Carolina Tennessee
Texas Wisconsin
A local company that I use offers 40 Mbps, it's a little expensive and has to be bundled with other services.
well where i live you cant even get TW, stuck with satellite tv and dial, dial up is advertised as 50kbs with our provider, the phone lines where we live are so bad we only get 2kbs up and down, :(, torrents are painfully slow, i dont even try any more, i just pack up and go about .5 miles where theres highspeed, TW actually comes part way down our road, but only because the power line splits off into the woos, what i would give to at least have time warners cheapest and slowest package...
i wish, we live about .5 miles away from the nearest cable line and all we can get is dial up, advertised speed is around 50kbs, i know, noones going to get that, but our lines out here r so bad, we get 2kbs both ways up/down, it kills me, hoping some new tech comes along soon to solve our problem, or at least some dsl :(
No new markets Engadget, just existing markets get the max tier now. Got my hopes up for a second there.
Wake me up when they reach that speed. oN that note: I nGermany, they offer 50Mbps for $50 http://www.alice-dsl.de/
Yes, you got punk'd
