HTC EVO 4G dev guide released: it's really boring, but the phone is still cool
See that picture right there? That's a photo of the HTC EVO 4G, the universe's first Android-based 4G phone for the Sprint WiMAX network, plugged into a TV over HDMI. Sure, you could hit up this source link, a Google Doc guide for developers looking to sling together EVO 4G-compatible Android applications before the best-specced phone on the planet is released this summer, but you might get bored with the abundance of code and shortage of amazing photos like this one depicting the greatest piece of technology known to man. It's 720p out, just in case you were curious or lacking in faith.

Nokia should bring N8 quickly , if not EVO will have it for lunch.
EVO 4G.. soooooo SOLD!
I plan on carrying my HD2 and EVO on either side of my hips and having both 4.3” screens directed at each other thereby creating a mini Hadron collider. The protons crashing into each other will create mini black holes in my pelvis and and over time transform me to Seth from Street Fighter 4.
@Nokia N900
I'm quite intrigued with the idea of a kickstand! Makes way more sense to have your phone pointed at you while you're at your desk at work, etc.
iPhone 4 will have to bring ALL of the following to the table in order for me to not snag this bad boy:
- Verizon support
- HD output
- Bigger, higher res scren
- 3rd party multitasking
- OS integration with Facebook and Gmail
So yeah... Looks like there's about a 99% chance I'm going with the EVOOOO :)
Is CorePlayer for Android out yet? I need Xvid, MKV (and subtitle) support built into an android player now! (Why this wasn't included by Google, I don't know.)
@One Love I was thinking the same thing. Now if someone could get an NZB reader/downloader working on Android...=)
@HerbieDerb
@HerbieDerb And I thought I was excited.
Already got the cash waiting for you sprint! - waves it around and around -
Don't look at me like that AT&T.
@crawdad689 HD out?! Who are you kidding, SJ ain't down with that-
esp if blurays are " a bag of hurt"
@AlexSanchez : Make it Rain!
$ $ $ $ $ $ $
$ $ $ $ $ $ $ $
$ $ $ $ $ $ $
@HerbieDerb
like weapons in a geeky wild west
@HerbieDerb This is the best post on Engadget. Ever.
@AlexSanchez Just keepin it REAL
@JeremyBenthem I won't soil my memory banks with your useless data.
@alan7467 : ).. and yes, I am disturbed.
@HerbieDerb amazing stuff really
@One Love they said they cant do it for android yet. possibly with this level of hardware but not when the hero was a powerful android device
@HerbieDerb wouldn't it transform you into Dhalsim but just in the nether regions?
@AlexSanchez
That's right, AT&T. Don't worry. Alex's attempts to make calls will be just as futile on Sprint's network as yours!
@HerbieDerb Definitely yes, just looking the cam, makes you want to buy it already. For sure, this is more than what we expected during its development stage. Reactions: http://bit.ly/evo-4g-phone-comparisson
@crawdad689 This is nice and will almost certainly be my next phone.. But I would honestly take the lower res VGA tv out if it was OS wide like on my Touch Pro.. This looks like its only for watching movies..
*Crosses fingers* Let this work on the browser, map, and games like my Touch Pro and I will for SURE buy this phone
@alan7467 I would agree that was fairly entertaining to read and made my day.
@HerbieDerb :D this really got me crying from laughter, man! Thank you!
@HerbieDerb
LOL
If they were aimed at your pelvis, wouldn't that make a large "HARDON" collider?
Excited much about this phone/bringer-of-world-peace, Paul? (ok, we all are)
Bow before your phone master.
@DougB541
*bows*
is it just me me or does anyone else get excited just seeing more news on this phone?
@thesafecigarette Concurred.
@thesafecigarette
Sexually excited? Yes!
@thesafecigarette Definately i get goosebumbs the min i see HTC E...VOOOO!
I'm not sure about that, this phone is just too damn big for some people (including myself), that's why the Desire and N8 will propably still kick ass at launch.
@kiezel I thought that about the HD2 until I tried it. The thing with this phone design is A) the bezel is VERY small, its almost all screen and B) its very thing.
The HD2 fits better in my pocket than my Droid ever did.
@kiezel Don't be a pansy toss out them skinny size 29 jeans and start rocking cargo shorts, do you not respect the EVO? jk. =]
@kiezel Boys shouldn't be wearing those tight girly-pants anyways.
@LEDfoot Josh would know from experience....
Every time I mention this phone my girl get's jealous, she doesn't understand how super funky this thing is. sigh...wiminz
@ThatDudeSolo
That's alright, trade her in for the Evo come Summer.
@Steven I feel guilty for even thinking about it LOL
I'm switching to sprint solely for this phone. Does anyone know the data pricing for the phone? Hopefully they don't change their current pricing for those who can't benefit from 4G.
@scots79
more than likely it will be a universal charge for 4G because the phone is capable of doing the service in a 4G area, I don't believe there is a way for them to block 4G on the phone if you were to go in an area that had it and you weren't paying for it. Much like when the iPhone 3G came out and the data plans raised $10 to help with the cost of the AT&T 3G network cost and upkeep, I still don't have 3G in most parts of where I live and I've been paying for 3G for almost 2 years now. Not an option.
@scots79
i've been on sprint forever, and i have no idea what the plans will be for the 4g phone ... but
a) my current all-inclusive plan on 3g is 99.99,
b) their 4g cards are the same price per month as their 3g data cards (59.99) ... with unlimited usage on 4g
i think the 'simply everything' plan will stay the same price, and even if it doesn't, it will still be the best priced plan across all the networks
@iBuferd
Negative, Sprint has said there will not be an additional charge for 4G, in fact, 4G is unlimited with Sprints current plans. Some people seem not to realize, it is cheaper to operate 4G as opposed to 3G. One of the reason 3G has a 5G cap, 3G is expensive.
@scorpeo Yep the mobile broadband plans for 4G/3G and 3G only are both the same price of $60 a month. I'm going to tether the poop out of the 4G with this phone without the bandwidth cap.
@iBuferd there data rates are flat... you dont have to worry about a surcharge for 4g its included in the 99$ flat rate for this phone
@Toneglaso
yea... That's cuz Sprint is really not using 4G speed. It's still on 3G. 4G dosent even exist yet. It's gonna take years for us to be using 4G. Plus 4G is gonna be expensive.
@Mtmrob Did you just pull a Kanye x Taylor swift?! Death to you!
The Phone is nothing short of amazing but for me in our area, we don't even have 3G for Sprint, Let alone 4G. Funny thing is, about 4 1/2 hours west is a 4G area....
@iBuferd
4 1/2 hours is pretty freakin' far. Unless you mean walk time.
@plyx
Nope, Interstate speeds of 75-80 mph...
@plyx
I guess what I was trying to portray is that not only is it one of the few 4G areas in the nation.. but it is pretty much the only area that has 3G through Sprint in our entire state.
@iBuferd
You should move to a better state.
