Verizon begins Android 2.1 update rollout for Motorola Droid
Flippin' finally, right? Verizon Wireless put the long-awaited Android 2.1 update on hold for its cadre of Motorola Droid owners earlier in the month, with an all-too-vague "TBD" as the only detail as to when we could look for it to actually, really land. We've just happened upon what looks to be an internal Verizon email that went out this morning, and sure enough, it sounds as if the update will at long last begin hitting Droid owners in just a few minutes. At noon on 3/30 (that's today, vaquero), a grand total of 1,000 users will receive notification of the update, while 9,000 more will get a similar alert just before midnight. If all goes well, the rest of ya will see v2.1 slide down starting on Thursday, though it looks as if patience will be your only friend as you await your turn. Head on past the break for the full memo, but don't get your hopes up too high -- wouldn't want to be let down again, would you buttercup?
Starting 03/30/2010, Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update for the DROID by Motorola. Users will be able to upgrade their software to version AP: ESE81/BP: C_01.3E.03P to receive new improvements and enhancements.

sign in with their Yahoo! Email address and password. Note:

only option in this scenario is for the subscriber to enable

software updates automatically, and your DROID will power
off and on as part of this software upgrade.

At last.
Enjoy Droid fans! :D
@ChazClou
Watch half of the first 10,000 be rooted because VZW took too long to send it out, and we don't even see the notice.
HEH, watch them pull it again after the first 1,000 users.
Doh!
@ChazClout
I wonder how many people are waiting to see if the iPhone/Verizon rumors are true instead of opting for the Droid and being stuck with it for two years? This update (and the Droid in general) are compelling, but I don't think they are as compelling as the idea of using the next iPhone on Verizon's network.
Should have bought Apple stock yesterday.
@justinpe
I, for one, was waiting for a halfway decent android device to hit the market, and the droid was clearly the first winner there. previously I was using an unlocked nokia e71 on att. I could imagine there might be some die-hard apple fans patiently waiting for iphone/verizon, but I sure ain't one of em.
@darjen
Of the iPhone competitors, I think the Nexus One has the best hardware and the Pre has the best software. Even with its disadvantages, I think the iPhone is still the best hardware/OS combo available. Also, they do have a new model coming out in less than 3 months.
I think there are a lot of people who are waiting for the iPhone on Verizon, not because they are Apple fanboys (they all switched to ATT 3 years ago), but because they believe it to be the best device currently on the market. My brother has never owned a Mac, or even an iPod, but is waiting to ditch his stupid phone until he can get an iPhone (Verizon is the only provider in his area). He has seen his friends fall prey to devices like the Storm and LG Env and he doesn't want to go down the same road as they did.
@justinpe
I would be more willing to wait for the N1 or the Incredible than the iPhone. I think Android has opened up a lot of people's eyes about what it's like to customize your phone to your liking, not Apple's...also, HOORAY! for the update, it's back to stock for me!
@jamo
It's a little ironic that one of the one of the top paid apps in Android Market is an app that let's you customize your unlock screen to look like the iPhone's.
Lock 2.0:
http://www.android.com/market/paid.html
@justinpe
Yep, the iPhone has a great lock screen...I like widgets, and customizable icons, backgrounds, etc... The iPhone's not bad at everything, if you like doing things Steve's way; I just prefer mine.
@justinpe I prefer the 2.0/2.1 unlock screen that lets you change it to silent mode. iPhone's lock screen is popular with people on 1.5/1.6 since they have menu to unlock.
BTW, you do know that the Android password grid is also pretty popular on Cydia for the iPhone as is the Pre-like Pro-switcher.
@TheGM Yes, I am aware. But less than 10% of iPhones are jalibroken and it is free through Cydia. This is available to all Android users through Android Market and you have to pay for it.
@TheGM Besides, I think we will see some more customization options from Apple with 4.0.
@ChazClout check this
Droid and Chevy Volt.. Do more with your Droid !

@justinpe ", I think we will see some more customization options from Apple with 4.0." probably and multi-tasking they have to compete with android after all ;) your lucky android exist it changed your bland landscape
@darjen The iPhone world is officially dead to me. I don't care anymore what they do I love my N1 and Android 2.1 to damn much. Congrats Droid users you have waited long enough let us all know what you think I am dying to hear from ya!
@justinpe
Idiot. It's free and already an option on the phone.
So. Um. Can we actually believe them today?
@whySoSerious
Doubtful.
I call bullshit
@whySoSerious
Why so ser--? oh forget it..
"a grand total of 1,000 users will receive notification of the update, while 9,000 more"
WHAT NINE THOUSAND??
@coolbho3000
The ones that bought Droids. Just so you know, there are a lot.
@coolbho3000
IT'S EXACTLY 9000!!!!!!!
@coolbho3000 Well, it's a random selection as it was last time. They will pick 1000 randomly to give the update to at noon. Then at nearly midnight, they'll pick another 9000 random. Then tomorrow, they'll pick more random. And so on and so on until everyone is selected for update. Today's batches are so that they can do a limited rollout, as a test. Tomorrows and subsequent batches will be so that they don't overload the servers... Pretty standard stuff...
@coolbho3000 I wish it was over 9,000
@HardToBelieve
Define "a lot".
@coolbho3000 You guys didn't get the "9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111!!!!!!!" reference there did you? That's ok, not everyone is that cool.
@coolbho3000
Technically, since 1000 get it at noon... after tonight, that'll put it at...
OVER NINE-THOUSAND!!?!?!??!??!!
@coolbho3000
You all should keep up with tech news before coming up with numbers out your asses.
http://blog.flurry.com/bid/31410/Day-74-Sales-Apple-iPhone-vs-Google-Nexus-One-vs-Motorola-Droid
@coolbho3000 What does the general public say about the number of droids receiving an over-the-air update tonight?
ITS OVER NINE THOUSAAAAND!!!!!!!!!!!
@sondun2001 Chill man, I'm an Android Developer, I'm sure 90% of my revenue comes from Droid users. I'm just making a reference to a widespread internet meme based on the OTA numbers posted by Engadget.
@hxczuner
great reference. dbz is awesome.
@coolbho3000 I have under 9000 Droids in my possession.
Refresh my mind... what did they disable for the 2.1 droid update? the new menu? other things?
@technogecko6 The most significant feature is probably just Launcher2 and live wallpapers. Otherwise, it'll be a very similar experience to the Nexus One's current OS.
@coolbho3000
Didn't the document from the last release alert state that live wallpapers would be a go? I recall it being a pleasant surprise.
@technogecko6 The 3D launcher is disabled (likely because it doesn't support landscape mode and the only other Android handset with 2.1 doesn't have a landscape keyboard.
Everything else is in there.
@Sawawa Did 5 homescreens get brought back in, know that wasn't in the first, but now that you (don't) mention it, maybe it did get put back in afterall. Anyways just checking. Thanks.
@technogecko6
Does this mean they finally worked out the issues with Skype on Android 2.1? If so, then this might also be good news for potential Nexus One owners, as it was rumored that was one thing holding up the release.
@KungFuHamster Milestone 2.1 update has an option to choose 3,5,7,9 home screens. I think Droid will see the same feature.
@technogecko6
now they need to add freakin voice dialing over bluetooth.
i'm pretty sure every dumbphone on the planet with a bluetooth radio is capable of doing it, why not android?
Happy for all the droid users...wish my damn samsung moment would get some 2.1 love...
@ThatDudeSolo Very true, I have 2 moments and a friend has a Hero. Come on Sprint, Verizon's 2nd vague time frame got fulfilled where's are 2.1?
@ThatDudeSolo You can go ahead an blame HTC for that. They have to catch up with Sense UI. An unfortunate middle man. Glad I've got a google experience phone.
@eNonsense Samsung moment is a Google Experience phone, and yet it's still not even 2.0, much less 2.1. And the droid, also a google exp device is only now getting 2.1, which came out in frickin january.
@iCello The Droid came out in November, which makes it even worse. That's if my memory serves me right. Welcome to 2.1 none the less my fellow Android brethren. From what I heard the Droid will be spitting image from the N1 just without the new drawer or what ever it is.
how do they decide who gets it first?
@theoneandonlyradiostation
Cage fight to the death gladiator style... *fingers for trident laying next to my lap*
@theoneandonlyradiostation
Verizon checks their billing records and sees who pays the most $ on time evry month... I wish...
@Rick James +1 that was good sir
Pfft no Eris update? LAME.
