ASUS's Jonney Shih confirms two tablets, one for Googlites, one for Microsofties
We've been hearing talk of an Eee Pad since the end of 2009, even getting a sort of unofficial, official confirmation of its existence from ASUS exec Eric Chen. Now company chairman Jonney Shih has confirmed not only one tablet, but two. "Netbooks are the best combination of personal computing and cloud computing, but between netbooks and smartphones and e-readers, we think there will be a space for something like a tablet or slate PC." This is where ASUS will insert a pair of models set to be unveiled sometime this year. One is said to run a Google OS of some sort, either Android or Chrome, the other running Windows. We're expecting some level of hardware differentiation between the two as well, but at this point we don't know anything else -- except that the Google flavored version "will have a lot of media." We like media.

Windows Phone or Windows 7, that is the question...
@bob e
Windows Phone 7 tablet would be awesome...
*Series*
As long as this can do HD video out, this will get my money rather than iPad
@ricjd
well, for the fact that it will most likely have USB ports and FLASH from day one makes it more worthwhile than the ipad already....
@ricjd
Like the ipad would have 'ever' got your money!
These guys are looking at the ipad pre order numbers like everyone else.
Non apple tablets will probably bring in Zune like sales numbers v iPod like sales for the ipad.
@ricjd
I would look to the MSI Harmony or Notion Ink Adam if that's your main concern. Both will be out before these and be priced comparatively.
@jaffreywali well who cares about the sales..if u sit, take a moment, remove the half eaten apple, don't you think that the Zune is way much better than the iPod?? now honestly, all fanboyism aside...c'mon, don't you just wish that Apple sold you that baby ;)
@thede
No. Not enough apps and content to make the zune appealing to me.
ASUS had better release the specs earlier coz as far as i know a bunch of my friends are heading towards ipad already, and there's no way to stop them
iHateApple Tablet?
Only one thing matters here...... will they blend?
@bingster I doubt it, but I know an apple will.
im waiting to get a 4.3 inch smart phone...
@kaasinees
HTC HD2
@Peytral
NO, HTC EVO 4G with Android. Well, I think my Nexus One will be with me a long time.
BTW, out of topic, in my country (Panama) I dont know any tech geek as pretty as you.
"--- between netbooks and smartphones and e-readers, we think there will be a space for something like a tablet or slate PC.---"
Sounds familiar to a Jobs line not too long ago for a very similar product.
New tablet? Rinse and repeat, I guess.
@astute
He sounds like he's not convinced and is just making this product cause of the hype around the iPad
@weeandystheman I know, right? Darn, this tinfoil hat is itchy.
Go Asus Go
When?!!
I am not going to wait another year for them to deliver it. I guess I'll buy an HP slate if it takes too much.
I mean really, regardless of what it can do, what's up with these names the "Eee Pad?"
..."Hey man, you get your new Eeee Pad?" lol
@Majrlee in the windows world i believe we would call them eee slates :)
i thought it was "Googlers"?
if we are throwing out new nicknames, I'd like to propose "Googlians"
@Addyct i've just been calling my self a Google Whore. hmm...maybe Goore...
@Addyct and now i can't stop saying "venkman, VENKMAN!" in my head.
@jaffreywali "Zune like sales numbers" hehe. Very witty. Is that what the average consumer looks at before buying a product? "Oh this Cowon player has the most perfect sound quality I've ever heard. But darn it all, it doesn't sell like the iPod, so..."
@N900
No. It will have Zune like sales because no-one wants one, not the other way around. People don't want yet another netbook without a keyboard.
You might disagree, and you might not get why people don't want this, like they've never wanted it before, but that doesn't matter. It's (amongst others) one of the reasons you are some random guy on Engadget, instead of the CEO of a multi-billion company. Your preferences != a visionary view of the future. You're preferences == just, well, your preferences, actually
@drange That's a really strange comment. "You might disagree, and you might not get why people don't want this, like they've never wanted it before, but that doesn't matter. It's (amongst others) one of the reasons you are some random guy on Engadget, instead of the CEO of a multi-billion company. "
So, essentially, you say he's somewhat ignorant and not a CEO. Then the very next second, you're acting smarter than the CEO from ASUS. Wow, ok, get you're story straight for one. 2nd, I'll tell you what they do want from this product (assuming it has good hardware). Consumers want choice, they like the fact that they will be able to choose between Windows or Android. They will look at the apps, openness and functionality of both and make a decision; if not have one partially made up before hand from reviews and/or personal ecosystem.
The beautiful thing about this products and companies, such as ASUS, is they don't need to hit multimillion in sales just to release a product, the consumers win if they like the product and purchase. Regardless if what you say comes true or not, you sound really arrogant and ignorant, while being dismissive, but perhaps I just misinterpreted your comment.
@drange
What does it matter if it sells less than an ipad?
If it makes the company making it money then they won't care and if it's a better product then the people buying them won't care either.
Convertible tablet makes the most sense for people who only want one portable computer, rather than a device for every mood.
Hmmm, remove packaged OS, install Linux.
Is there an onscreen keyboard for Linux ?
@Threlly Ubuntu has it.
@Threlly
If you're gonna run a desktop OS what the he'll is the point of getting a tablet? You must be a real masochist.
@alex2792
Err, the manufacturer is shipping a Windows version....hello...knock knock...
@Threlly
windows 7 actually has multitouch built in, sure it's not the ideal implementation but I would venture to say that it's still far better than Linux
@alex2792
I'm still not seeing your point. Some distros of Linux have multitouch built in as well.
@Threlly
Just because it's Windows doesn't mean it's Windows 7. There's this new mobile OS. Maybe you've heard of it? Windows Phone 7 Series.
Now being that that last part is "series" and Microsoft is fond of SKUs, it wouldn't be that big a stretch to think they're planning to use this new OS on tablets as well as phones.
@BigJayDogg3
Ok, well that would be interesting I suppose.
I do like a full OS though, and as Linux can have a small footprint too it's the best of both worlds.
If it does turn out to be Win7 Mobile it'll be worth a look.
Always gotta be a Linux guy wanting to do that. Hey to each his own. I rid myself of that OS after too many headaches.
@JimmyBoy
I feel your pain, desktop Linux is a perfect example of why "free" isn't always better since it's only free if you don't value your time.
@JimmyBoy
Not really, Windows will be too heavy for the hardware, and Android is full of Googles Nazi data mining nastiness.
Android rules good direction ASus can't wait to buy it
These guys are really amping up the excitment. They saw the Steve Jobs keynote and countered with a green plastic sign. BODY BLOW!
I wish google would talk more about Chrome OS. But if the google version is x86 powered, count me out.
