Canon Rebel T2i / 550D receives plaudit-heavy reviews
We've seen plenty of the headline 1080p / 30fps video mode on the Rebel T2i, but what's been missing till now are the equally comprehensive reviews of this new 18 megapixel shooter's other talents. Starting off with image quality -- still the bread and butter of any DSLR -- Camera Labs informs us that "the EOS 550D / T2i delivered images which were essentially the same as those from the EOS 7D," describing them as highly detailed and exhibiting no greater noise than can be found on Nikon's 12 megapixel competitors. An impressive feat, you will agree. Further appreciation is meted out for the newly improved LCD screen on the back, whose 3:2 ratio matches the sensor's dimensions, but there's also warning that the 7D retains a significant advantage in terms of ergonomics, weatherproofing, continuous burst mode, and autofocus. Even so, both reviews were happy to pin their "highly recommended" badges on the T2i, and you can discover the more nuanced reasons for doing so at the source links below.

ugggh. I want so bad. Poor me. :-(
@crawdad689
Indeed... in the vernacular of the internets: "DO WANT!!1"
Looks like I'll finally be replacing my Rebel XT in a couple months... come on, birthday!
@badasscat I replaced my Rebel XT with this last week. LOVE IT.
I'm loving mine :D If only I wasn't such a bad photography :(
@Twisthem488
focus on becoming a better spellographer first.
I got the t2i the day it came out. I love it!
How much is that going for?
Or should I say how many organs will do
@airbag888 its about £700 body only
@nick1988
Thanks man. Totally out of my league (even with organs..)
@nick1988 Darn that expensive, I think in the US you can get the kit (body + 15-55mm) for less than $900.
@airbag888 if it's america you reside in i believe it's $900 for those who don't want to do the math. I also think that's only body as well, not sure.
i want so much but i'm afraid my bank manager will only let me have the Rebel T1i :(
@nick1988 The T1i is also a great camera, I have no complaints.
Don't forget the 7D's much better viewfinder. That was a huge reason I bought the 7D over the Rebel series cameras.
@photoguy622 You are totally right. I also bought the EOS 7D just two weeks ago over the T2i. The viewfinder is almost at FF level that's why I love the 7D so much. Also a great feature for me is the integrated Speedlite transmitter. I use that a lot and it is just amazing. But anyway, I am happy for those folks who are able to get a decent camera for just a couple of dollars.
I've just bought the 7D, but I nearly plumped for this baby, at the price it's a killer.
Can't wait to see how Nikon respond.
I drove two hours to find a store that would break release date. It truly is a great camera. However, I recommend getting a battery grip and a 55-250 mm. The kit lens are sufficient, but the noise and AF can get a little bothersome. I was heavily considering a 7D, but this camera does the job just fine. Saved me almost an extra grand.
the only thing I am missing is swivel/rotating lcd.. this is a huge minus... other than that is great camera, specially for that price
@DamirSecki
Most photographers I have come across, have gone for the 550d simply due to its supreme quality against its competition..and for most people, quality over such features is the name of the game.
Canon introduced swivel/rotating lcd's in their compact powershot models about 5/6 years ago but they were not popular so they removed this feature. I'm guessing, this is why they haven't added it in their dslr's (yet)
@kuruptedbhoy I can't imagine a situation in which I would use a swivel LCD on an SLR. I am used to using a viewfinder. Even when somebody hands me their p&s to shoot something for them, I always have a stupid moment where I instinctively put the camera up to my face before realizing there is no viewfinder.
I guess there might be some photographers who shoot at odd angles a lot that might use a swivel LCD, but I don't think most of us fit that description. And I'd rather not have another thing that takes up extra space on the body and can break.
@badasscat T2i has a great video camera (along great photo camera) so swivel LCD would come handy all the time... I have powershot s5.. and I am looking for quite some tiome to buy a better camera that has also great video capture... ad as I said T2i would be perfect except for this small detail, that to me is a major feature
@DamirSecki To me, Rotating LCD make the camera feels cheap and amateur.
It certainly is the best dslr in its class..head and shoulders above the competition. I'm thankful that I got my eos 550d free (,")
my unboxing video was put up last week

@kuruptedbhoy
Nice to see a fellow RSR reads engadget.
@pocketdocket
Same :-D
how are you finding your 550d? im really impressed with it. Would still love the 7d. cant imagine canon ever sending us one of them big boys!
@kuruptedbhoy
I filmed my housemate at an open mic night and the results were incredible at low light.
I'm toying with buying a 50mm 1.4 every time they send me to jessops. That would make it just about perfect. Pretty excited about the sx210 as well though.
@pocketdocket
Yeh the 50mm is pretty sweet. One of the jessops guys i know bought it recently and the results were impressive. I'm looking for a good telephoto..but there is a lot of choice.
I'm looking forward to getting the sx210 tomorrow. Its a big improvement over the sx200 which was already good. Should blow Plastaphonics tz10!
@pocketdocket
get the 50 1.4. I have one and the low light is absolutely phenomenal. I took some low light video at 60fps of my friend on her computer with all the lights in the room off and it looked great.
i don't get the point of this post......
the camera has been out for like more than a month now.
and so has reviews for the camera..
@ahchar they are probably giving props to a mates website... or got paid to heap praise on it.
I won't be upgrading anytime soon but it is indeed a great camera
This is possibly the best performance for price in a DSLR ever. Loooove this camera.
Too bad it still don't support widescreen 16:9 is not friendly with ps3 or you hdtv. Because it only take mov and 4:3 image ration will leave a bar in the TV.
@techlord Where did you get that? A quick google led my to Canon's support site where they give HDTV-specific instructions for hooking up the camera to your HDTV.
dibs
got mine yesterday, finally! waited a month for the damn thing to be in stock 50mm prime f1.4 in the mail and then i need a zoom prob 55-250 and my indoctrination into dslrs will be complete
Sorry I have been out of the scene for a while but is the 550D a clear upgrade over the 40D, despite the size/weight issues (most people feel the Rebel lines feel light/cheap).
I like mine too! :)
Also, save you money and get the body only. The kit lens is not that great. I bought a nice collection of lenses also and have the kit lens sitting around and probably won't use it. Anybody wanna buy?
They are wonderful camera's......Now need Adobe to update so I can use the RAW files
I got this camera couple of days after the release off eBay (and btw, the wait was killing me). I probably need to hold another rebel camera to appreciate the goodness of this T2i, it is my very first SLR so to speak.
I need to know the gadgets that this needs to come with to use its full potential features. But nevertheless, I love this camera and would recommend it to anyone who asks.
My unboxing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shaClGlPG6E
I got one of these suckers today, sadly to find out that there is a dead pixel in my sensor placing a small white dot in all my pictures...
Going to get a new one tommorow when the store opens.
I've upgraded my E-510 to a D90,..but seriously considered this camera.
I do not do video hardly ever,...but the main consideration to me was how Canon will not share system info to 3rd party lens makers,..so they make them reverse engineer the new Canons' inner workings to keep their lenses working....hence why an older Sigma,etc...may not work right on newer body.
I do not like to be pigeon holed into one make for lenses....and AFIK only Canon does this.
But if you only love their lenses to start with,...that's a nice camera!
i just got the cheapo 50mm 1.8 for my xsi kit. I did get to try out the 50mm 1.4 on friday and its a nice pice of work. hell, i dont have a job but im getting my skills down pronto. its all about ROI over here.
the rental rates on that lens is so cheap i may not need to buy it for quite some time. that said, the 1.8 is ULTRA NOISY, though its optics are sharp. hey, it will work for the meantime, right! the 550 is basically the 7d in a plastic body, and thats a heck of a camera. good show canon, if i have a chance to upgrade my body this year, im gunning for the 550.
I have the 1Ds Mark II. I purchased the T2i (550D) a month or so ago. It is a much better camera than you would think. The images are very good, roughly on par with my 1Ds Mark II. The autofocus is a bit slow but is usable. The low light performance is VERY good. The kit lens is actually much better than you would think for the price. The video mode works VERY well also.
Even the plastic body doesn't feel that cheap! It isn't a solid as a 1 series, but for plastic is actually good.
Overall, I am very pleased. I would buy the T2i again. Anyone looking for a good DSLR should absolutely check this out before you buy something else. You can't beat it for the price.
