Those whispers you might have heard of a Pro version of Samsung's
delectable Galaxy S have just turned into a booming roar, thanks to
Eldar Murtazin apparently confirming the existence and prospective arrival of the rumored handset. According to the legendarily loquacious mobile reviewer, Samsung will be strapping a QWERTY keyboard onto the
already potent Galaxy S hardware and upping the pricing ante with an extra €50 (about $67) charge. He also manages to give us a June launch date, but pictures of this device are predictably not yet available. We'll just have to let our imagination do the work until
Mr. Blurrycam gets on the case. Screenshot of the relevant tweet after the break.
Update: HDblog.it has thrown up a pretty realistic (though fake) render of the rumored model, and if the real thing is anything like this, Sammy might have a contender on its hands. Now we sit and wait for June, eh?
Love the Photoshop.
Made me lol
@iCello After seeing that, I will be DEVASTATED if the Pro version doesn't come with a separate numpad.
@iCello
Yeah, seriously lol'd at that photo, thanks Engadget :)
@Bratyr
Look what you did! You made them change it now!
@CRA1G........... agreed on a dedicated row for number keys
Now where is my Galaxy S mini pro, with a 3.1-3.3" screen...
You fatty nerds are just getting lucky with these huge slates :(
@iCello
I'm SOLD. Forgive me EVO but I can't live without a QWERTY.
@Eternity I can't live without Super AMOLED, I know I've miraculously made it this far, but I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out.
@Eternity
You will not be forgiven that easily.
Plan: Mini Hadron collider in FULL EFFECT : )
@juanvaldez
Super AMOLED needs to be on EVERY PHONE.
@iCello Yah, I agree, I like the samsung galaxy S, sans the keyboard. if they are planning to release it with a new keyboard, I would prefer if they will put it under a different name. Opinions to Galaxy: http://bit.ly/samsung-galaxy-s-phone
Yesssssssss!
Win! I just might switch to Android if the price is right.
Now when will this thing be available?
@indeed
June, idiot.
Choices are a good thing. It's impressive that many companies don't recognize this.
@Waltah My favorite thing to talk about on Engadget, "choice". +1 to you, +100 to Samsung.
Don't like the phone but, good on Samsung for introducing some variety.
This is great news, my wife is dying to get a new phone but she is killing me with her "QWERTY keyboard" requierement. Up until now, the best one I could find was the Tilt 2, which is good, but a bit old. So I'm guessing this will be the new "best" with QWERTY...
@jaleman
What about the Droid? Spec wise that's been the best for several months now.
@Prevacator
Sorry, you are right. She likes the Droid, it's her pick at this point, but the keyboard is a little cramped. The keyboard doesn't feel as nice as the one on the Tilt 2. That and she is a bit hesitant to switch over to Verizon to get the Droid. (we are currently on AT&T)
@jaleman
My wife has the same issue. She looked at the droid but didn't like the way it looks or the feel of the keyboard. Hoping samsung is for real on this. Too bad its GSM
@dswatson83 Just buy a dumphone for the wives of you both ;)
Oh man, a mini-mechanical DAS keyboard would actually be pretty fucking sweet on a smartphone now that I think about it.
Shit, now I really want one.
@Prevacator
The keyboard is actually going to be full size, the phone is just huge!
If only the keyboard could actually be spaced like that
@chosenone1
It can...just get smaller fingers.
@matty
sure, i'll just cut them off...
Oh please please PRETTY effin please please tmobile! Please get your first not-a-turd of a phone... PLEASE. PLEASE!!!!!! I beg! Don't companies tally these pleads just as bulletins on myspace used to get bills passed?
And yes, the photoshopped keyboard's a funny thought.
@TrumanHW
You consider the Nexus One a turd phone?
Re: the TMO question -- do we know which GSM bands this phone supports?
(or UMTS more accurately)
I'd still buy EVO :)
Phandroid's PS was much better :)
GREAT!! Nice to see Samsung trying to fill customers needs!! However it will be great to see it get a flash for the camera and video and for light. How about it Samsung?
@mleerOK I think it has an LED flash, makes sense, Sammy loves LED.
@mleerOK
omnia's flash/light is brighter than the droid's I'd suspect this one is bright too.
I still don't get what's so PRO (Professional) about having a keyboard on a Phone ? sorry .. ain't gettin it .. and i know many Professionals who don't get that either . .
i hope this becomes a trend...50 bucks for a qwerty is worth it on any device..............hope supersonic follows next
@jiggz I'm gonna guess the whole thing is a hoax... Samsung was hyping Swype on the Galaxy S at CTIA pretty heavily.
That Eldar dude is the biggest Samsung nuthugger on the web (and he hates Nokia for some unkown reasons...).
He totally Hates Sony Ericsson too
Nice i'd love to have a qwerty phone + super AMOLED, those screens are beautiful
i wish this device was a htc model with sense, i don't like the samsung software and samsung seems to have really bad software support (no updates ever)
@Xstream and Busta
Really, because my Sammy Moment doesn't seem to have bloatware or skins, just vanilla Android. And it's pretty damn fast, decent keyboard. Have you ever ACTUALLY used a Samsung? It was a toss up for me between the Hero and the Moment, I chose the HTC Hero, but literally at the last second when the Sprint sales dude came back with the box, I told him get me the Moment, I'm making too many typing mistakes w/screen keyboard. No regrets.
And waiting for update, like 2.1, umm the Hero is still waiting as is my Moment.
@Dank Dillweed
the current samsung devices don't have that strange ui that is correct and if this would be the case with this one it would be a no brainer for me.
if samsung decides to give the current devices an update to 2.1 that would also be one step further in selling me this device but for now it doesn't look like they are going to do that (even though there are rumors)
It's "ex-ante"
@Squirrel
nope. http://bit.ly/bcN1fq
ex-ante, your post seemed like a good idea. ex-post, not so much.
WOW
If only the finished keyboard would look like that new picture from the update. That's a great set-up for the keys.
Chances are, they will fubar this and not have the dedicated numbers row. Match or best the nexus in terms of ram and this can replace my G1.
