Apple Haters must be seething. The reviews are in guys and no one cares about the things you claim it is supposed to do. Just embrace the new tech. I have no doubt the farmers raising horses for pulling buggies were upset too when Henry Ford came along.
@Dr Blight Good Try. A Mustang wasn't around when it was time for the horse & buggy to go away. That's like saying I won't get my son a red wagon because it isn't as good and do as many things as a red fire truck. Somehow the Apple Haters believe the world revolves around them wanting to do line code manipulation custom configuration and so on. It has been proven time and again the masses are where the real numbers and the profit is. Look at the Japanese car makers. Three models. Not a factory with 300 possible configurations.
What new tech? I hate to be repetative, and say this is just a big iPod Touch, but if people insist on calling this things new and magical and revolutionary, I'm going to have to keep saying it is just a big iPod. Sorry, but there you go.
Also, Good Game on not having basic print functionality built in. After 80$ extra I'll be able to hook up a bulky, ugly, wart adapter for a USB port, and print some images from my camera if I am lucky.
Exactly. This device will eventually be just as popular of a product as the iPod. Not this year, priced at $499, but in 2 years when they introduce an even better model for only $249, and in 10 years, when their entry-level device only costs $99, they will be as ubiquitous as the present-day iPod, absolutely.
As a subway-commuting Manhattanite, I can guarantee you that I will see more iPads in the next 2 months, than I have seen Kindles since their inception.
Anyone who hasn't come to the realization that this is a winning (meaning that they will sell boatloads of them.... not meaning that YOU personally necessarily agree that it's the device of the century) think it's the bestproduct needs to wake up. In this form factor, for the vast vast majority of consumers, things like display quality, battery life, and ease-of-use far outrank things like lack of multitasking.
Well, I'd agree with you if it were $199. But it isn't. This is a $500 and above item. And tech ignorant people are not going to purchase one , day 1, without doing a little thinking. Sure you will have your gadget loving die-hards buy one even though they have no clue about its limitations....but I feel at this price point, a LOT of people are going to ask themselves..."why do I want this, and what would I do with it" , and in answering those questions, the lack of muti-tasking, and other restrictions which you wouldn't get with a normal netbook or laptop, are going to be a major consideration.
@Mactacular im shorting AAPL. putting my money where my mouth is! people will be so disappointed when they find out they cant type and browse the "full" web. next thing they know they'll be on the laptop or desktop. kids will realize they cant take notes as they thought they could and cant read for an extended period of time as a real text book.
@(Unverified): The big issue with Apple haters on Engadget is by and large they believe that consumer tech product purchases are driven by function and specs, i.e., more is better. After a decade plus of Windows and the like BS, consumer have figured out that they don't want useless shit that never works as promised. Hence Apple is king with the consumer. Corporate ITs departments are exclusively staffed by clowns who are so afraid that everyone has finally figured out just how useless they are and that management would love nothing more than to put iPads on every desk and fire their sorry asses.
LoL. LMFAO. ROFL. HAHA. an even better model for only $249? You must be new. With new & innovative tech being the exception (which this clearly isn't, Stevie wonder can see that) This isn't how things work. Please show me 1 example where apple, released a better (not just bigger) version of something & cut the price in half. Please, I'm begging you.
That's quite funny considering I would never consider typing all of this out on a phone. The iphone is a nice toy and a decent phone. Although it is still flawed and annoying in a number of notable ways.
A lack of a delete-all-SMS function would be high on the list.
Apple's stuff tends to do best when you don't push it too hard.
@dark star Well then, I hope you are using IE as your desktop browser, because there are many sites that are tuned only for IE and can't display properly on the likes of Firefox or Chrome.
Enjoy your "full" web experience on your favorite browser.
I have successfully transitioned many small-medium size businesses to the Apple platform. There is one consistent message from all of them. Thank F*^k we don't have to deal with that crap anymore. And, the harder you push them the more it makes sense. I am currently sitting with 24 applications running without a hiccup. My iPhone connects to all of my clouds, clients, maps and everything I could possibly want better than any other device I have ever had before it came out. Times they are changing. Those who can't adapt get left behind. Or, more obviously comment extensively on Engadget why Apple products suck. Hahaha. Love it.
@Dick Lynch Can you name any company that has done that? Apple is selling millions of iMacs/iPods/and now iPads despite the much higher price point than a competitors (depending on what you get) and also despite a down economy. How? Because they made their products better and more appealing. While Apple was doing that, the competition was going nuts trying to come up with the next great........netbook?
The problem with Apple in business is that they are the only manufacturer so there's not much chance of negotiating rates. I absolutely hate my Dell but it did cost my company peanuts on comparison to what Apple would have charged. Plus, if Dell won't play ball then we can go somewhere else. This is the reason why I don't expect to see Apple adopted in the corporate world no matter how much I would like it.
Kindles have been out for how long? And I've seen 1 person with one. I live in San Francisco too. I'm sure I'll see a lot of iPads out in the wild after Saturday though.
It's just not true. Even at $599 on 2yr contract, even without ANY 3rd party apps, even without *gasp* copy and paste, iPhones were absolutely flying off the shelves.
Call them sheep with too much money if you want, but recognize that Apple customers ARE MORE THAN willing to pay a premium for a product that YOU don't believe is fully state of the art.
When the iPhone came out, there wasn't a SINGLE piece of electronics out there that gave soccer moms and tech geeks alike the "OMG this thing is awesome, I need it now!" feeling the first time they saw one, and then again the first time they got to use one. The iPad will be no different. Despite its similarities with the iPhone, this IS a whole new breed of device. It has NOTHING in common with the $2K, 2.5 inch thick XP tablets of years past, and its size difference makes it much more different from the iPhone than you guys give it credit for.
@crawdad689 Nicely said. But don't waste your breath. These Microsoft fanbois already forgot that Windows is the worst piece of shit OS with millions of bugs and only after SP3 or Win7 it got usable. Ask them they have no idea what Win98osr2 is... or WinME
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

So if Ford decided to sell the Model T instead of a Mustang, you'd be okay with that?

Why do you need to say anything? You're a nobody on a blog. No one really cares. Steve Jobs doesn't give two shits about people like you

@suicidebob You're just as much as a nobody as the rest of us here by your logic, so get off your soapbox.

@Unverified User So by that token then you must also believe that the EVO is just a big N1? No, of course you don't.
@(Unverified)
Yeah, something has limitations. Solution: Don't buy it!
Oh noes! There go all my gadgets out the window!

@Dick Lynch Oh...guess I didnt answer your question.
Apple iPhone 2G--------->$599
Apple iPhone 3G--------->$199

Those are from AT&T subsidies. They aren't the actual MSRP.
Don't embarass yourself by replying.
