Is LG going Droid hunting with its C710 Aloha Android smartphone?
Android phones are getting ever faster and, with each iteration, ever bigger. The Droid was large and in charge when it was announced, the Nexus One a little taller and a little speedier, and HTC's EVO gives the slab moniker new credence. Now there's talk that LG is getting in on the big and beautiful game, with an Android smartphone called the C710 Aloha. It's said to sport an 800 x 480 screen like the EVO and N1, but unlike those two will have a full QWERTY keyboard. It's also said to offer 802.11n WiFi along with GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity. Nothing is confirmed at this point, but a device called the C710 was given WiFi Alliance approval recently and, more convincing, a user agent profile file has been found, confirming the resolution and wireless capabilities. If true, the Aloha could provide to be a worthy alternative to the Droid for those who want a phone with a little more to love, and a keyboard to boot.

Aloha! I can't wait to switch from Droid.
@larciel why? i love my droid! (turns out it *was* the droi,,,nm)
@larciel
The N1 didn't appeal to me because it lacked the physical keyboard and everything I could do on that, I could do on my Droid(with the help of DroidMod 1.0). The EVO 4G I'm a lil envious of because it looks like it's gonna kick major ass and even though it doesn't have a physical keyboard, the screen is large enough for a soft keyboard to feel comfortable, but still, my Droid has some staying power...but now LG does something like this. I don't like LG devices, especially their phones, but I said the same thing about Motorola before the Droid came out. For just once, I want to keep a phone for my whole 2 year contract instead of constantly extending. Over the past 3 years, I've had 4 new phones! At some point, it's gotta stop!
I almost hope this phone sucks...or doesn't come to Verizon to keep me from getting it.
Why are these getting fatter and fatter? The iPhone 3GS is super thin and almost equals the Droid Phones.
Note: I know I will be downgraded because I like the iPhone. Since I have Sprint, I am super excited for the EVO 4G but still like skinny.
@jmiotto
Wait until you hold an EVO 4G in your hand. The HD2/EVO4G form factor is the perfect size IMO. While I do like the iPhone/iPod Touch form factor, it's painful switching to landscape mode and results in more scrolling.
@jmiotto How are they getting fatter and fatter? The Droid is only a tad thicker, the Nexus One is just as thin, the EVO is the same (from the pictures we've seen so far).
What phones are 'they'? Because I don't see I thicker trend.
@jmiotto Well, the iPhone doesn't have as large a screen, when I got through the first two lines I was worried this was running into Mini 5 territory (worried I'd have to make a decision). I'm looking at the Samsung Galaxy S, it's supposed to be the world's thinnest touchphone and sporting a 4.0" display. While I can't confirm that, and the source is Samsung, the fact that they are touting the Super AMOLED making the device thinner is the reason and that seems to be logical.
So, bigger and thinner? Count me in. If it's comfortably pocketable I'ma be a size king.
@jmiotto qwerty keyboard kinda makes things thicker which i dont mind because its alot faster to type on and more accurate not to mention, its just a phone who cares if its an inch thick it fits in my pocket and thats all i care about
@jmiotto You have obviously never seen/held an HD2 (which is pretty much the same phone as the EVO). I was surprised hot thin it was and it felt good in the hand. Light, but not a cheap feeling light.
@jmiotto
look at the biggest android phone so far - the dell mini 5... 9 f-ing mm thick. look at their review of it and see how much thinner it is
Didn't a teardown show that the N1 had inactive 802.11n WiFi, or am I imagining things?
If it isn't on Verizon, then it isn't an alternative to the Droid at all to me.
@David Wagner i actually switched carriers from V to tmob for the G1 and then back again for the Droid. clearly i have too much money on my hands...
@David Wagner
Is this Professor David Wagner? O_O
Damn this year is like 1M android good phones. I hope apple come with something good if not come June I'm getting a N1
I need one of these premiere Android devices to come to AT&T - I'm not interested in the iPhone, but I'm less interested in the Backflips and Aeros of the world. If only I didn't have to have to have AT&T - the Evo 4G would be amazing, plus I get 4G where I live.
@Spiritbeast
Horrible trolling there. Then why stay with AT&T.
If you really wanted android and hated AT&T so much you would have left already.
Just another Apple hater
@Spiritbeast
It's not subsidized, but the Nexus One is readily available for ATT.
@TheRogueFFAngel No, I'm not 'trolling' - when your phone is part of a family plan with a discount, switching to a new carrier would cost a lot of money. And if I'm going to pay an extra $30 a month for data (I currently have a dumbphone), it better be with a phone I like enough to cough up that money for two years with.
@Spiritbeast
Im on the same boat. I got 4 lines on a family plan but if i switched i would end up paying over 2x more per year. In my case i have an iPhone but im ready to change it up now.
@TheRogueFFAngel : My god, you're the worst Apple/AT&T combo troll on Engadget. Anytime someone criticizes either company, you come to their "rescue" with some unintelligent and irrational "thoughts" which absolutely no one agrees with you on.
I'm sure you'll be in full force on iPad launch day, and your account probably banned by the end of the day due to the inevitable.
Droid is great. It'll be the only phone I've kept for more than two years, unless it breaks of course
@brandoshido
Yeahh except you've probably only had it for half a year. I thought the same thing about my blackjack II in 2007.
@danbrunell
Except . . . the Blackjack runs of Windows Mobile, does it not (which won't be supported by Microsoft anymore).
The Droid runs on Android, which will (theoretically) be supported by Motorola/Google for years to come.
Sounds great. Can't wait to find out the screen size. I'm jonesing for a 4"+ screen Android device w/ physical QWERTY, Snapdragon or similar proc, and subsidized by AT&T. Unfortunately, their still dragging their feet on smartphones (Pre Plus delayed till June, LG eXpo removed, etc) to keep pushing the iPhone. I had great hope for the Dell mini 3 & 5 (Aero & Streak), but it's looking like AT&T is going to cripple the Android on those just as they did with the Backflip.
"It's said to sport an 800 x 480 screen like the EVO and N1, but unlike those two will have a full QWERTY keyboard."
Soooo...it's a netbook?
@InspectorEngadget
The thing about these leaks and previews is that they have to mention what these phones *don't* have rather than what they do. Nowadays I'm expecting superphones to have all that was mentioned here (apart from perhaps the hard keyboard).
Tell me what this phone doesn't have (or does have that is exceptional), and then we can start comparing...
i want my Evo with keyboard... a keyboard like lg's prototype for wp7..
It would be nice for LG finally to make a 3.7 inch screen, LG are only in love with 3.0 or 3.2inch screens apart from the chocolate. Please make a screen a screen size of 3.5 or 3.7 inch.
My phones before the Droid were all LGs and they were rock solid. I'm very curious to see what their take on an Android phone wiill be like... hope I don't have to exercise my ETF!
hmmm I smell spril fools
oops I smell April fools
@ajac09 Today will be tough since you don't know who's serious and who's not (especially over the internet)
@pyehac and also the name strikes me as fake but hey would be awesome if its true but doubt it would come to sprint :(
Good news. Hopefully they use a capacitive screen this time around. They do know how to make a nice qwerty keyboard, as on the In Touch GW620, it just needs to be thinner.
LG have been slow to the Android party, hope this is good...
Isn't the Droid's resolution better (800x854) than all of these phones?
*480x854
I want to upgrade my G1, I don't mind bigger. Definitely want bigger screen, don't mind fatter if it means a bigger battery. I would pick up a nexus 1 but I'm on a family plan and don't feel like shelling 500+ out (especially when there's phones like the EVO, and the Dell mini 5 coming).
Before my Mytouch I rocked an EnV2, whose keyboard I adored, and an EnV before that. Here's hoping for a phone with super strength and a keyboard with rounded out keys!
One of the best mobile phones I ever had was a dual screened LG flip phone (large screen inside, small color screen on the outside showing photo caller id) on the Cingular network a few years ago. The thing would hold a charge like none other, got a really good signal, and it actually pained me to see it go.
I wouldn't necessarily trust their other stuff, but their cell phones gave me and the wife no problems whatsoever.
LG making a good smartphone? April Fool's.
LG has made great phones for a long time. the only problem it had was it's UI. With android, it will be unstopable.
along with Samsung of course.
how bout some leaked pictures? :)
Aloha Droid, Aloha Droid. Alo ha Droid.
