Wowsa, looks like those FCC folks really take their jobs seriously. With the
iPad they didn't just bother to test out the radiation and maybe take a little peek for themselves under the covers, but instead disassembled the whole machine on camera. Unfortunately they took it upon themselves to cover over the specific chips, so we'll have to wait for one of those pro bono teardowns to get the full lay of the land, but it's still a unique look at the makeup of this thing. Check it out in the gallery below.
Update: The dudes and dudettes over at
iFixit are analyzing the board and the components in uncensored fashion --
head on over if you considering yourself a "nerd."
Update 2: iFixit's now got photos of the
iPad's 3G communications board as well, even though it'll be another month before the 3G version comes out!
@swanle
They do? I think you just made that bit up.
Sorry you're so bitter cos you're missing out on all the fun! You miserable sod
That's the sexiest internals I've seen since that time I tried to watch scrambled cable porn.
Tosh already did an expose' on the internals

@technogecko6 I'll get downranked, but... Apple knows how to build a neat computer.
@Atkins Why do you think that? I right there with you buddy, they do know how to make neat devices...
Doesn't help people's case when they say "I know I'm gonna get downranked, but.." though.
@N900 "Doesn't help people's case when they say "I know I'm gonna get downranked, but.." though." Decided to try for once... :)
I am only interested to see what is A4 aqnd they cover it. Nice
@staticjethro
Does FCC do this with every device? If yes, how come we don't see a nexus one/ droid tear down? How about joojoo about which there was a big discussion yesterday?
@Atkins
For real... look at the Mac Pro. I love opening those up because they're so nice to look at...
@Yoda Yes, have to agree. The hard drive sleds, the slide out RAM slots, thumb-screw PCI slots... The inside of the Mac Pro has more thought put in to it than the outside.
@technogecko6:
That battery could totally be user replaceable. And it should be. Alas, just one more Apple device to pay a heavy fee, ship the product, and get a refurbished one back some days later.
@technogecko6
Need I say More? http://imgur.com/90wSU.png
@BrandonHarris:
Who cares? How many people are going to open their tablets to use them?
@Yoda
Nice QR code dude
Scanned from my Nexus One
@Jordan
How would you feel if you took a smoking hot model back to your place one night...undress her and bullet holes and stab wounds are found in abundance.
Or use that same scenario but instead of finding bullet holes and stab wounds you end up scratching your johnson for weeks....
I don't know about you, but I appreciate when someone actually puts meticulous care into my products...inside and out.
@BrandonHarris:
Because that non-user accessible inside affects the product how?
@Jordan
1 word.... Qua Lee Tee.
@BrandonHarris:
It doesn't affect Qua Lee Tee at all.
@BrandonHarris Is that a fan in the JooJoo?
@BrandonHarris well, looks aren't everything. it's not like apple themselves are putting these together. It's like chinese kids. lol
@Jordan
Oh really? Next time you buy a car asks then to place your engine in the glovebox.
By the way, my true point is this: Any company that takes such a perfectionist approach to the internals has undoubtebly made sure that the software kicks ass too.
@BrandonHarris:
Correct, but that's a product that has user-replaceable parts and needs to be worked on. Take the Mac Pro - it's an absolutely beauty on the inside and I love it for that, but it has user replaceable parts and access. This does not. There is nothing inside the iPad that can be accessed by the user nor are there any parts that can be replaced.
Look at the inside of an iMac. They look a lot like your picture of the Joo Joo tablet.
Being a perfectionist about the internals means nothing about the software, and that wasn't your original point. But I guess since Apple didn't do anything software wise and just slapped a smartphone OS on this thing, they were able to spend their time developing this product by making the internals look simplistic - since you know, nobody will ever see the inside.
@nneonneo While I agree that Apple internals are very well designed, let's not forget iPad has mobile internals. Just buy an off-the-shelf iPod, take off the shell and screen, tack on a 10" screen and a giant battery and you have nice looking slate insides with plenty of room.
Other devices in this class have Atom x86 internals so are taking netbook internals and cramming them behind a screen.
When Apple do this to the Macbook Air, it'll be impressive but OS X will need a big overhaul so don't expect it any time soon. iPad seems like the first steps of many into a new computing standard.
Geohot, please start taking notes
@oproski
Looks like dual batterys
@OCEAN CLAK Wowsa, TWO ways for this POS to catch fire. I am unsurprised that the FCC took the bloody thing to bits, They probably wanted to see if this too will spontaneously combust like other Apple products.
@rederikus It's not an XBox (RROD), or a Sony Laptop so I don't get the reference.
@bullshitexpresscom
Really, do you live in a hole??? Apple products are well known for spontaneous combustion.
@vmod32 if you Google any product you will see they have problems. Really tho one iPod out of ever few million doesn't mean Every one of their products will "combust" sounds like you just have a stick up your ass bout apple. They have counselors for that type of thing or you always have the right to just not buy anything apple.
@bullshitexpresscom
Wow, you really are your namesake. I don't remember a RROD ever causing my xbox to burst into flames.
Mmm so much room for... mods?
@denrocks1
Like a camera and lots of other things that Apple decided not to add until Gen 2 or 3 or whenever they feel like it.
@denrocks1 I'm not so sure about that, it looks like the metal case comes up and fills that area in as a giant heat sink, which might be a very good thing a this is supposed to sit in your lap so it wont scorch your legs like macbook pros do.
@TheSteve As much as I like the iPad I doubt that one SD slot will interfere with the "heat sink" and scorch your legs.
@Atkins for sure apple could (and should have) add(ed) one, but they were talking about mods, are you really gonna drill out the aluminum for a mod? I guess if you are going to make a port on the outside you need to anyway, but it seems like a lot of work for something that should have been there in the first place, and will be on all of the other slates.
@TheSteve Oh, agreed, I was just saying... Maybe some LEDs? :P
@Atkins Sounds good. Anyone know how thin this thing is on the edges? Is it just that there is no room for anything except the screen? All of the extra space just seems weird. Presumably the space below the motherboard where there clearly is room for stuff by symmetry will house the 3g/GPS units, but will that make the weight on the wifi only model lopsided?
@kiden
Cos a camera would really work on a tablet
@Atkins
Wouldn't be easier to buy a SD card that has USB connection included (like Sandisk SD Plus) ?
@suicidebob A camera always pointed at your face? Yeah, totally pointless.
Looks lika there's a lot of free space available...
@Atkins
the more you add the heavier it gets and the more it costs. Potentially more could add heat as well.
Besides not having a camera, I'm happy with what the iPad has.
@think before you react Oh, me too :) Tired of lugging my MBP.
See, now leaving out things like USB and memory card ports makes perfect sense! They simply didn't have room to include them! :-/
@Vidikron The idea is you leave out things that people really want in version 1 and then add some of those left out features in version 2 and repeat, repeat, repeat. Profit!
@One Love Finally someone who sees that Apple isn't a bad person, but a good company :P
@Phantom Pain
Why would it need a click wheel? It already has a big-ass touchscreen.
Is that a "Powered by iPhone" sticker I see there.
Apple always has interesting insides; absolutely squeezed in, but is it just me or does that look like there is a lot of space ??
the free space is for iPad 2G :)
