Heads-up,
iPad owners (or to-be owners, as it were) -- the same devices you currently use to juice up your iPod touch or iPhone may not work on your fancy new tablet.
Consumer Reports,
TUAW and our own
Chris Ziegler have confirmed that their powered USB hubs wouldn't charge the iPad, and we're even seeing reports that some Wintel rigs won't either. The only sure bets right now are Apple computers and your nearby AC outlet, leaving iPad owners with fewer options when it comes to topping off that battery when away from your abode. We're pretty certain this all boils down to the iPad requiring more power than most powered USB ports are designed to give, but it's still something to keep in mind. So, any of you early adopters finding that your own powered USB hub or non-Mac
does rejuvenate the iPad? Let us know in comments below.
Update:
Macworld has
a nice explaination of the whole situation. Looks like tablets just require more power to charge than smartphones -- who woulda thunk it?
Update 2: And now Apple has come right out with a support article --
head on over to see what it recommends.
The front ports on my 1st gen Mac pro didn't charge it. Haven't tried the USB hub or monitor ports yet. Been burning through the battery all day
Won't charge from my USB Apple Keyboard (the "big" keyboard with the num pad) on my iMac, but it does charge from the USB ports in the back.
Personally I never charge the iPhone from the computer anyways, doesn't bother me that much that the iPad won't charge from the keyboard.
only letting me charge via power outlet... says not charging when going through usb
don't worry for the low low price of 49.99 you can have the privilege to buy a usb to ipad adapter that will let you charge through any usb port.
My iPad says "Not Charging" when plugged in to my PC... but it is. It's slow as hades, but it does still charge over USB. So even if it says Not Charging give it a while.
@pstansel If you let the iPod turn if it should charge. It should charge then at about 2W, which would fully charge the battery in about 12 hours.
Mine will not charge with anything, even my Macbook (2 years old), except the wall socket. Frustrating!
So, it won't charge connected to a regular computer? Ok, I see no problem there, why would anyone who has a computer and knows how to use it even consider buying an iPad?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... enjoy iDiots... LMFAO What a piece of crap.
If Apple were still using Firewire in it's mobile devices this wouldn't be a problem. Oh well, sweet nostalgia.
I want a real tablet computer. No iPad. I am getting a Lenovo S10-3t
They will fix it, but may this be a lesson to all of you never to buy version 1 of anything (regardless if it is Apple, or any other manufacturer). If you are going to do this, wait a couple of months so they can at least work out some of the kinks. This is far from the end of the world, but it still sucks.
Why charge from your computer?
It's a bad idea. Chances are that you are going to overload that port and it will stop working and then you're screwed.
Use USB ports on the computer for syncing and buy an AC adapter for charging.
@robby818 Why "buy an AC adapter"? Use the one that came with the iPad.
After trying multiple devices, the only one that I have found that I'll charge my ipad is the charger that came with it. Not even my Mac will do it. It always reports "not charging" when plugged into anything else.
Same problem here...says "not charging" when plugged into any of the USB ports on my HP Pavilion dv-7 laptop. This sucks...I researched the ipad quite thoroughly and there was never any mention of this problem, and I only found out that older ipod/iphone wall chargers won't work either when I asked the Apple sales guy point blank. No doubt Apple was well aware of this problem very early on. It's not a show stopper, but it's way more convenient for me to charge via a USB port rather than the wall charger...it's just friggin annoying when you're already paying top dollar for the ipad.
I went to my local Apple store today just to check out the iPad, and from a hardware perspective, it's one of the nicest pieces of computer equipment I've ever had the pleasure of laying my hands on.
That said (and I don't wanna sound like a troll here) it really did feel like a giant iPod Touch.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817334016&cm_re=7_port_usb_hub-_-17-334-016-_-Product
I use one of these (non branded version) and it charges my iphone 3gs and an ipad at the same time. Cheap too. Works when the hub is connected to my PC and my Mac
Ya know, if it says it's not charging, that means the screen is on. Try it with the screen off. While mine said it wasn't charging from a USB port while I was setting it up, and loading some apps, etc. it didn't seem to lose power either. I'm giving it some time with the screen off, at which time I can't tell if it says not charging or not. It actually went up a couple of % in the last 15 min, so it seems to be working of the USB...with the screen off. (Little USB powered hub BTW, of an HP mini tower) It is also charges fine off of a Monster slim charger I have for my Zune. eg http://www.4electronicwarehouse.com/products/monster/zu-schgr.html
Nice thing about that for this, is it has about a 6 ft cord, and ends in a USB socket. My Callpod charger works just fine. The latter two with the screen on.
So, sync it via USB, and charge it with the screen off. I don't see the need to use it while it is hooked to your PC...you are sitting at your PC, use that. If you want to charge while using, use a wall plug..it comes with a very nice one, and others do work.
just out of curiosity, are you guys trying to charge when the screen is turned on?
I've heard that on lower powered USB ports you have to turn the screen off, and you'll see it start charging in itunes. Apparently. Shoot me if wrong.
Disregard my post about my hub working, the power adapter for it just died, most likely pulled too hard on it.. so lame.
No issues here, my Macbook Pro charges my iPad (:
I'd rather spend $499 for an iphone 4G than a iPad. Don't get me wrong I love Apple but the iPad looks like a giant paperweight IMO
I just really find this news to be quite enjoyable. Not because I hate Apple per se. But because I hate the way that apple releases products. So much hype over every new product release. And then a scramble to fix all the issues for the 2nd version. When are people going to learn. Apple is just another tech company. They just have better marketing.
Looks like ifixit did a teardown ofthe iPad and here os what they said about the battery and charging.
"On average, the device "sips just 2.5 Watts. That's 1/5 the power of a compact fluorescent bulb," the report states. Even so, the larger battery demands more charging power than standard USB ports provide. It needs its included 10 watt charger, and won't charge while syncing with a standard USB-equipped Mac or PC"
Apple's charging support page states the same. Looks like this isn't so much of an actual "problem" as it is just the fact of having a bigger battery requiring more power to charge.
I think it would be an issue had they not included a wall charger.
Oh, I don't know, maybe the problem is that you don't have the damn update for iTunes! IS IT NOT THAT FREAKIN OBVIOUS?!
7 apple articles in a row. Is that a new record?
I knew it... first gen disappointment. It lacks the very things that would make it cool..dual or even one camera, video recording, good sound, HDMI out. MicroSD, FLASH, etc.. I have seen enough. Enslaved.com can keep towing the line for Apple, but I am not buyin' it.
Now iPad owners go buy content to read. All this iPad did was drive up costs for all devices for content.. Apple sucks donkey balls.. The people that lined up for this beautiful piece of crap are f#cking sheep..
@Mrwirez You do realize that Endgadget publishes these stories because they get a lot of traffic from people attracted to the controversy.
People like you encourage them to write more.
How do you like them Apples?
Thanks for your contribution to Apple's hype, their bottom line appreciates it, sucker.
@hill60
Blah Blah Blah.. I don't contribute to anything.. I have not seen an ad in years. The fact remains, it is inadequate device..
The iPads power requirement....it's over 9000!!!!!
What's amazing to me after all these reviewers have supposedly thoroughly tested out the iPad and written their reviews I haven't seen a single mention of this issue. Not from Walt, David, Engadget, or about 20 other sources. Perhaps the reviewers aren't doing such a thorough job?
Oh, you mean you actually want to _charge_ your IpAD through the provided USB cable? Well, you can't because we've cleverly designed it to require more current than standard USB port will supply. Did you know about our $29 AC charger at the aPPPLE store? And while you're there, pick up a few port dongles to adapt your tablet to ports that have been standard in the industry for over a decade now. Coming real soon: IpAD v2 with REAL USB ports, HDMI port, camera and multitasking! Queue up in the Lemming Line right now to be sure you're the first to get yours! (and, believe me, you'll get yours)
Guys... again. It IS charging even if it says Not Charging. Mine charged up to 100% just fine overnight despite saying it wasn't. It's just a LOT slower. So plug it in, go to sleep, and you'll be fine in the morning. Or, you know, 4 hours after you wake up ;)
I really don't see the issue here. Except, maybe, bad advertising on Apple's side.
The thing can, eventually, get some power from a USB port, but USB isn't supposed to be it's primary power source. For that, there's the AC Adaptor included. I suppose USB power may just be there to prevent syncing cycles from drainig battery life.
Now what they should have done, IMO, is to drop the whole USB charging thing altogether. I mean, if it can't be assured that it will work no matter what, then kill it. ¿wasn't that actually the reason why they left multitasking out? ¿because they felt it couldn't be done properly without killing batter life?. Allowing an unnecessary feature that may not even work properly most of times, is just a way to piss off costumers for no reason.
I think iPad is something that's supposed to stay at home most of the time, where there's plenty of, you know, AC outlets to plug the thing in. And even if you take it outside with you, its 10 hours of battery life mean it will usually last long enough for you to get back home before your iPad dies.
On another subject, to the "you haven't seen a netbook charging thorugh USB": Plase, shut up. iPad is not even a Personal Computer. It's a glorified (although certainly awesome, probably best ever) 10 inch MID, plus some limited computing abilities (namely iWorks) and an App store. Not a "Apple Netbook minus keyboard". The fastest you get over it, the sooner you will stop sounding like silly Apple fanboys.
It's not only that it looks like an iPod "but larger",as it also will be used like one, just better due to screen size. Yes, some people may use it to get some actual work done. But i'm going to bet most people will use it just for mild entertaining. At wich the iPad excels, according to the reviews.
So iPad lovers, praise this thing for what it actually is, not for whatever you wished it would be.
Heh, I'm not surprised. I can't even charge my Blackberry from my computer's USB port unless I install the BB drivers or have one of those fancy dual connecting USB cords...
I'm pretty sure this issue is software and will be fixed with an update. I don't know if this was mentioned already but i was curious about the charging issues so I booted my Macbook Pro unibody into windows 7 via bootcamp and sure enough I experienced the no charging error. However while in Mac osx everything charges fine.
It has also been reported by a friend of mine that while the iPad displays a no charging message it did in fact charge his iPad to full battery. He was using a windows 7 box (non Mac/bootcamp)
ur doing it wrong.
I bet you could use one of those 2-1 usb adapters to make it work ..I'm sure someone else has said this but I'll say it again!
It will work if you buy the $30 PC USB adapter dongle, or the $30 USB hub adapter dongle from Apple.
It is so magically it cannot be charged by normal usb hubs.
If your power requirements are so far outside the USB spec that 95% of USB ports can't charge it, then you have no business claiming that your device supports "USB charging". This is the same as if Tesla Motors claimed that you could charge the Roadster over USB. Technically it's true, if you happen to have a USB hub that supplies 110 volts at 40 amps.
my htc magic has the same problem. 500mw isnt enough, deal with it.
Is this Apple support article correct:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4049
"On some newer Intel-based Macs, such as the MacBook (13-inch, Late 2007), when a device requiring more than 5V and 500mA is connected, the port with that device connected to it becomes a high-powered port capable of offering up to 1200 mA at 12 V. That port will continue to operate as a high-powered port until the device is removed."
The USB ports on newer Macs can individually offer up to *12V* ??
Yeah, my wife's USB port on the front of her frankenclone doesn't charge her Ipad.
actually it says not harging but my Ipad charges. I think i has to do withthe screen being off. but it does charge via usb
Better than my BlackBerry, which for some stupid reason only charges when connected to a PC or an official BlackBerry wall charger. Things like the car USB adapter I got with my GPS don't charge it at all.
i work in a large IT shop so i have access to many machines and here are my findings.
let me preface i have no agenda, and i have an ipad ( i love it FYI ) but i find this charging issue to be asinine!
charging on a MBP booted into OS X works.
charging on that very same MBP booted into windows via bootcamp doesn't work
charging on a PC booted into OSX86 works
charing on that very pc or any pc for that matter booted into windows doesn't work ( i have tried 10 or so machines )
pretty strange eh?
-Jenzo
Just bought an Ipad , plugged the usb cable that came with it ( unplugged form power adapter) and plugged into the front usb port on my Mac Pro tower , still get not charging.
