Apple holding iPhone OS 4 event, April 8th!
Yes folks -- the world is turning upside down. Apple has announced an iPhone OS 4 event on April 8th at 10AM PT for a "sneak peek of the next generation of iPhone OS software." So if you're wondering about the future of the platform... your answers will appear sooner than you think. The team collectively dropped an "OMG" when we saw this news, as it's pretty unusual to see such a big event coming from Apple right on the heels of something like the iPad launch. Of course we'll be there -- at Apple's Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino -- live and direct, providing the liveblogging coverage you know and love.

Hell yeah!
@Peter Church
Finally! I was getting worried that we weren't going to be seeing it for a while. Let's hope it really makes iPhone OS more modern.
@Peter Church could this new OS be for the new iphone that they will announce?
Wow, the iPad just came out and sold 300,000. iPhone 4.0 is coming in THREE DAYS (which oddly seems like a long time now) and Steam for Mac is supposed to coming out something this month.
This is a great month to be an Apple user.
@Peter Church omg omg omg omg omg
@Peter Church
I wonder what they can add...
All I can think of is MULTITASKING
@Peter Church
YIPEEEEEE!
@Aaquibn
Widescreen support (854x480 (FWVGA) preferably, though 800x480 will do too).
Multitasking would be great too, these two things are what's keeping me from buying an iPhone.
Look at me, all excited and quick to make a comment.. It's only 3 days away which is really surprising as well. Can't wait!
@Aaquibn
I'm hoping for "limited" multi-tasking, like 3 processes at a time. Give people more and they'll kill the battery and then try to blame Apple for it.
I would also like to see a better notification system, dashboard widgets, and maybe a nicely integrated game network (a la Xbox Live), but I'll settle for limited multi-tasking.
@Peter Church More great news from Apple! Keep hammering the trolls here.. They must feel pretty sick now.
@TT
That's an odd resolution considering that existing apps will look worse when stretched unless its exact pixel doubling (960x640)
@Peter Church
New Homescreen pls!
They better add Multi-User support to the iPad. Not much more than another personal big iPhone device without it. So much for having my kid's games, apps, movies on his account, and my email, adult apps, movies, and music on mine. Come on Apple, get with the program!
@Peter Church
Except you'll still need to jailbreak..
@Peter Church
Indeed, wonder what we'll see. Anyone else think it would have been cool to have the event on April 4th? "4.0 introduced on 4/4!"
@Peter Church Apple is really on a roll right now! Depending on how good the OS 4.0 is, I may have to sell my Droid and get the new iPhone when it comes out.
@Peter Church
Also, I don't think you'll see a native Microsoft Xbox live app on an Apple platform, sorry.
@Peter Church lets goo!
When they say "iPhone OS" I hope they are talking about the actual iPhone/iPod Touch and not the iPad.
@cjwild
I didn't say I wanted a native Xbox Live app, that would be stupid. I want something LIKE Xbox Live, but made by Apple. There are already services like Plus, but I would rather it be something officially supported by Apple.
@TT
It's gonna be 4:3. iPad is 4:3 too. iMacs are different story.
@Peter Church
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
@Aaquibn Multi-tasking is pretty good right now with Backgrounder and Pro-Switcher. But it's nice to know Apple may be taking back some of the jailbreaking capabilities. That's if all prediction are right. My wish is for background feeds like weather info based on my current location without opening the app and changing my zip code. Work with me Apple!!!
FINALLYYYYYYYYY!
if this doesn't have multitasking i'm throwing my iphone out the window
@denrocks1 The iPad runs iPhone OS. Currently, it's an iPad-only version (3.2?). But yes, iPhone OS 4 will be for both.
@Peter Church I don't think "a sneak peek" means we'll be GETTING iPhone OS 4. I mean, it'd be nice if I was wrong… but…
yes and multitasking for iPhone and iPad. A change in the homescreen would be quite nice too!
@Peter Church Looks like they are trying to pre-empt the Evo 4G event on the 16th. Wonder if they will finally get their screen and specs up to par with other devices. Their software library is unmatched but in terms of features/hardware they were lapped long ago.
Love the way Microsoft thought they'd throw a curve ball in on the 12th and then BANG!
Momentum doesn't stop. Hate to be competing against Apple right now.
If the new iPhone is going to be high res, how will they demo OS 4.0 on an old iPhone 3GS?
@Peter Church
It sure is a good time to be a consumer.
@Jeff Kibuule
Yes, but 960x640 is still square (4:3 is square to me (yes, I know it isn't, but it's no good for watching movies) , 16:9/9,5 is the only thing that'll work for me).
@Peter Church
Definitely exciting news but I hope Apple drops something worthwhile *cough multi-tasking cough*.
On a side note, I think MS will be closely watching this event to determine how far behind Windows Phone7 will be from iPhone. Which can't be a bad thing since this could force MS to speed up development/release of additional features before holiday2010 release. Go competition!!
@Peter Church To be fair it will be announced on the 8th but there's no confirmation it will be released that day. They may say it'll be out in June with the next iPhone.
Curious though: if the iPad runs on iPhone OS then this announcement will have an effect on that too right?
@DirtyVegas That's great except for one thing: it's f'ing Easter!!!!!! (Yeah, still would have been a good release date.)
@Peter Church
what kind of unholy orgy have i stumbled unto....
@Peter Church You just described the Android platform =)
@Peter Church The announcement is in 3 days. I'll bet it's not released for a few months :-(
@Peter Church Well not in 3 days its a Preview event!
I will probably be out in june or july
@Peter Church
Man just hearing that they are cookin' up the new OS and it's going to be out in a matter of months has gotten me pretty excited. Yes!
Pro-Apple commentary being upranked on Engadget??? *head explodes*
@bigdonny
Liar.
@TT
Don't know what everyone wants with 16:9 or better 21:9, especially on notebooks. How often do you watch movies on the iPhone, the iPad or a Notebook? I think 4:3 is a good format for internet devices, you get more informations, and on "real" computers is the 4:3 perfect (using Photoshop, editing music with Cubase etc.).
Yeah, they'll show iPhone OS 4.0 *yehaa*, but I think the next two months until the iPhone launch in June there'll be no iPhone OS 4 for non - developers...
@Peter Church They just saw Microsoft's invitation for the 12th so they just had to undercut them.
@Kloc
Yeah, really, I'm starting to think that Apple has a mole in Microsoft headquarters.
@Peter Church I don't care about what you said, but if Expose style multitasking is announced, and future hardware of the iPhone gets a keyboard, I will j177 all over the face of OS 4.0.
@HotFuzz
I think if you notice, people around here are more pro-Apple than you think. They are just anti-iPad.
@Peter Church Isn't this the day apple's supposed to announce their new advertising platform?
@Peter Church Coming April 8th: Mind control for the IPhone and iPad! LOL! I guess Stevey be feeling pretty chipper and spunky these days, huh? As someone above me said, what a GREAT tie to be an Apple user. Where are the trolls now?
@TT
It's called a jailbreak. Use it. Use ProSwitcher, and please oh please stop throwing the multitasking curveball each and every time.
In other news: I hope for some new Ui features!
