Yes folks -- the world is turning upside down. Apple has announced an iPhone OS 4 event on
April 8th at
10AM PT for a "sneak peek of the next generation of iPhone OS software." So if you're wondering about the future of the platform... your answers will appear sooner than you think. The team collectively dropped an "OMG" when we saw this news, as it's pretty unusual to see such a big event coming from Apple right on the heels of something like the iPad launch. Of course we'll be there -- at Apple's Infinite Loop campus in Cupertino -- live and direct, providing the liveblogging coverage you know and love.
I can hardly wait to see what comes out of this!
Why is the world turning upside down? It is just a new version of an operating system. I'm interested to see what the OS is going to actually deliver.
No wonder what this update brings to the table, many here will still hate it, lol.
People = Sheep with memory loss, seriously.
How quickly do we forget what happened just a decade ago. Sigh.
@Aku
A decade ago? What happened... Windows Mobile 5 came out?
Oooh..
1. Multitasking
2. A2DP controls enabled
3. Lock screen info displayed (calendar, weather, emails, sms, calls summary)
That's it. Not much to ask is it? I'd even fork over a few bux.
apple's dominating all the tech news
Why do the dates when things are released, have to be set on a school day? Why could it not have been during spring break or the weekend? =.= I hate getting news late, and I hate pulling my iPod out during class...
Wow whatever they will announce will be awesome. I eat whatever apple shoves down my gullet and will pay extra for it! Please shovel more apps into my gaping maw.
4 > 3 so it must be amazing!
I dont care whats new. If it doesnt work as a phone first whats the big deal??????? Another Epic fail!!!!!
I don't even have nor will ever buy an Apple product and I'm keen to see the new OS.
FLASH FINALLY!!!!
@spacemonkey086
Yeah right.
It's also unusual to see Apple let you have ANY idea about what they'll be talking about at their upcoming event.
SO excited for this. Hoping to see a lot of new stuff from Apple.
so if its a "sneak peek" does that mean we can't expect the OS to be live for a while after?
Will be a big show for Steve-O where he can sell all those missing but obvious features (hello multi tasking perhaps?) to the public as a MAGICAL-AMAZING-AWESOME invention by his heighness Jobs.
I dont think my aging 3G will benefit much from v4... seriously, this thing feels slower and choppier with every week that passes. Sadly, apple is right when they say multitasking is no good - at least for the first and second iphone.
Will someone remind me why you all think the iPhone is so good? You all seem to be wanting everything android phones have had since day one, all i hear is multi-tasking, multi-tasking, widgets, bkgrounds, themes, a decent notification system and the occasional flash! Its laughable how ppl are worried about multi-tasking's effect on the iPhone's battery and speed. My Desire runs as fast with 1 app running as it does with 12 and i still get 10-14 hrs out of it. And yeah one day my battery wont last as long, so i'll spend $30 and buy a new one......LMFAO
Apple is now the one playing catchup and they've got to come out with something special to beat Android and the EVO, 4g hotspot for 8 devices,720p, multi-tasking, flash, full customization. Would love to see Apple better that. The only thing iPhone has now is the app store and Android is catching up quicker than ever and will overtake it before long.
P.S I was an Apple 'fanboi' until i made the switch and it'll take something amazing for me to go back, here i go...downranked into oblivion :( lol
@cadams85
You said it all im from 3gs -> nexus one . And wont go back if something amazing doesnt hapen. My next phone is evo if apple doesnt suprise me, where im sure it wont. I like apple but it fails allways somehow.
I really really really hope that they finally allow custom SMS & email sounds. I hate the default sounds and I am sick of Jailbreaking my iphone just for this purpose. Just let me sync my own sounds, not just ringtones, to the phone so I can have my "Oh Shit! It's Dr. Tran" sound for incoming SMS. I mean a 5 year old Sony Ericsson phone can do this!
From iPhone OS 4 I expect to have the "characters counter" in sms text messages... Even a nokia 3310 has it... Furthermore, i hope in a graphic update, like some mac widgets' effects (for ex.).
Don't You whant something graphically cool?
I DO ;)
@rebel ahh, dude, it says iPhone event. Please take your trolling to an iPad article. (BTW, my iPad WiFi is doing just fine)
Well, there goes $10.
OMG! I am blown away! Maybe, this is a very big maybe, Apple was keeping Mobile Flash under wraps, and they are going to show off in a few days! Now would that be cool, or what?
@steve19137
Yeah, maybe, though highly unlikely.
Also, are you some Apple insider? Because being blown away by the announcement of the iPhone OS 4, without knowing any of the features of it, is somewhat odd.
- Full A2DP support
- Better predictive text and ability to add words to dictionary
- Better keyboard
- Better camera w/ flash
- Unified inbox (an option for those who prefer it)
- Voice dialing/memos
- Custom sounds/ringtones
- Landscape keyboard everywhere
- A useful lock screen
- An LED for notifications
- Better notification system
- Upgraded Safari/Email and other core applications
- SMS character count
- SMS forwarding
- Easy/Quick way to turn on/off BT, WiFi and 3G
- Multitasking / Widgets
- More cloud friendly and less iTunes dependent. A phone is an always "on" device
- Wireless/iTunes-less backup of core data
- Flash/Silverlight etc. Let people turn them on/off but give people an option.
- HTC Sense like pinch gensture to get expose like view of all home screens (make more sense on android since there are widgets) but none the less.
...
The OS/phone are far from perfect and are still missing features that should have been there from day one and that were available on "dumb" phones for years.
I can not wait for this!!!! Although I don't like the fact of getting older for it.
@Ezye1313
Dude. You'll be two days older. Not much of a difference. Now, waiting 'til summer for the release. I don't like the fact of getting older for it. :O HYPOCRITE!
I wonder if this will be available for iPod Touch owners like myself like OS 3.0...
God damn!! I just sent my iPhone to Apple repair service!!
@Dani7
it'll be so cool if they send your phone back with the 4.x update
So exciting!!!!!.....What if Jobs surprises the world by announcing another device,.(unlikely to happen,but a girl can dream!) :)
