Apparently there was still a HDTV or two without the
DivX stamp, but that should be mostly resolved now after a new deal with Sharp. The new
AQUOS LE820 LCDs -- featuring the apparently
astonishing Quattron quad-pixel technology -- are able to play 1080p DivX HD files from a connected USB drive. Not quite the
embedded content service we saw at CES, but as previous announcements have revealed, DivX has been very effective at squeezing a toe in the door and eventually widening it to include more devices and compatibility. The best part? We don't have to re-rip all those DVDs prepared for the upcoming
Galaxy S smartphone.
Nice, damn nice.
@Mrtoocool yeah that's the size of bezel the iPad should have had.
@mikmik111
Considering that TV is 60", I'm pretty sure that bezel is larger/thicker than the iPad's.
How many people actually encode in DiVX HD?
@tekdemon is this the same as DivX Plus HD?
"DivX Plus HD is a marketing name for a file type using the standard Matroska media container format (.mkv), rather than the proprietary DivX Media Format. " wiki
@tekdemon
At least 5 or 6.
@juanvaldez ...so I'd say more than a few, but not necessarily the majority. And also, would .avi be available, that'd be nice. I wanted a source link to dig but I'm too tired for searching on my own.
Is this DivX Plus HD (which no one actually uses), or the garbage low quality DivX that no one would want to watch on their shiny new HDTV anyway?
@dkratter14 .mkv support?
That's the sound of an Oblivion bomb hurtling towards you
@tkrow21
As much as I like MKV, its time that people stop using it.
Quite frankly, as a container, the support is just lacking. With Divx, AVI, or WMV at least you can play it on your PS3 or Xbox360. H.264 MP4 you can play it on your iPod, Zune, PSP, or even iPad.
MKV is fine for the desktop, but the world has moved passed that now.
@juanvaldez @tekdemon This TV looks like it's certified at DivX HD, which means it could play DivX/AVI files up to 1080p. DivX Plus HD is the format based on .mkv which will play Matroska files with H.264 video and surround sound AAC audio. DivX Plus HD certified devices will also play DivX/AVI as well. Just wanted to clarify the distinction, but either way, this TV will support DivX files right off USB as well as paid .divx content purchased at FilmFresh, CinemaNow, etc...
@juanvaldez Pretty sure it's not DiVX Plus HD, DiVX HD uses the .divx extension and container format whereas DiVX Plus HD is basically just matroska. Really wish they didn't use such confusingly similar names.
Matroska support would have been awesome but I don't think this is it.
@Alexpeegs
You realise this is a post about a TV, right?
... Right?
@HaZaRd Who are you talking too? I think you watch too much TV.
@EliteGeek
The comment got deleted since it was so off-topic :P
The guy was rambling on about the iPad.
Great! Now it's even easier to pirate movies.
@maattp how?
@nigra Well now, you can just use the .avi straight from a USB instead of streaming it from a laptop/pc/dvd/ps3/360 ... this basically means nothing lol.
My Samsung 750 LCD has been doing this for 1 year now. AND it plays MKVs, flash files and the like. It can do subtitles also, something MKV2VOB can't. And amazingly, it can also output 7.1 surround to my receiver through HDMI. I have also connected my PS3/360/FIOS to it all with HDMI, and the receiver, and it automatically routes the surround audio from one port to another. Its a crazy TV, and only $1800 now.
DivX, SchmivX. That's a good looking TV with or without the questionable extras.
Interesting that all the posts by different people jokingly saying it reminded them of a big iPad are gone.
OHHHH MY!!!
If it has .MKV + .M2TS support, I'm all set.
Now I just need a couple of TB usb 3.0 key key chains to hold my collection of DVDs... and oh yeah good easy to use software that make life easy to rip the DVD to a suitable compliant format.
@(Unverified) Handbrake + external hard disk?
But who uses DivX nowadays?
@(Unverified)
Why would you want to play back dvds on a tv of this caliber? maybe if it was a 27" 720p tv, but definitely not this!
Okay that TV definitely gets a 10 for astetic appeal.
