Nokia E71 and E66 owners get free Ovi Maps navigation

Nokia E71 and E66 get free navigation
GLOBAL – You spoke, we listened: Free walk and drive navigation is now available for the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66. The latest version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation has been available on a range of devices such as the Nokia E72, Nokia N97 mini, and X6 since January. After listening to customer feedback though, the Ovi Maps team has created a version that works on Nokia E71 and Nokia E66.
People will be able to use Ovi Suite to side load the latest country maps onto their devices so they can enjoy offline map browsing alongside free navigation. The process of making the latest version of Ovi Maps available for existing devices is quite involved, but the team managed to include complete navigation functionality. Due to technical constraints in back porting the app to existing devices, unfortunately, it wasn't possible to offer further premium content such as Guide Michelin and Lonely Planet guides. These two devices will also be the last of our S60 3.1 and older devices to sport this version of Ovi Maps. But every upcoming Nokia Smartphone will come with free walk and drive navigation out of the box.
These two Eseries devices join the recently compatible Nokia N86 8MP
See below for a full list of compatible devices.
The update is available now from Nokia.com/maps, and will also be available in Ovi Store.
Ovi Maps compatible devices include the Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia X6, Nokia N86 8MP and (with slightly different functionality) the Nokia E71, and Nokia E66.

i have ovi maps on my n900 and its horrible!! i miss my G1 with google maps and navigation :(
@N900androidOS
You know it's a completely different app right? This is the Symbian platform. I used it, albeit not free, on my N96 this weekend.
The N900 is Meamo, not Symbian.
@Tes
well either way.. ovi maps is awful on my n900
@N900androidOS Update to Ovi maps for N900 coming with PR1.2. Just wait a few weeks and see.
@N900androidOS
Well lovely...iTunes is awful on my PC. But it's sort of irrelevant isn't it seeing as this story is about the Ovi Maps app on SYMBIAN phones. The N900 version doesn't even have turn by turn so it's obviously not the finished article.
@Tes
You are right. Having used both, new Ovi Maps on Symbian is 100 times better than what N900 has. I bet that Nokai plans to develop Qt based version in the future so that they can make it available for both MeeGo and Symbian with identical features.
@Tes
go find some non cyber friends, u internet troll
@N900androidOS
Yeah, I'm the troll...that's why your comment is the one down-ranked into oblivion. You commented on something in some weird effort to tarnish the news with some negativity despite the device you were talking about not running the version of the software being discussed. Who's the troll?
@N900androidOS
Dude, seriously. Try to think before jotting down another keyboard spasm here. He is right, different app entirely. Does not negate your experience even though its completely irrelevant to this article.
About freaking time. It was always there. Just not free. Too bad I have moved on to Andriod.
@alloneword
Exactly. My Android phone (HTC Desire) is hopefully coming tomorrow. I would have cracked up laughing if they had finally released this for my N96. Will still keep it around just in case seeing as Google haven't released the turn by turn free Google Maps in Europe at all and not for any of the HTC handsets,
@alloneword
Same here moved from e71 to N1 few months ago. Ever looked back. Should have came sooner Nokia. Shame that in Europe there isnt Navigation yet. But I hope we wont have to wait as long we have for Nokia.
Finally it is out, have been waiting for it for months. Originally had a 12-month navigation subscription but it expired more than 6 months ago. Even that version was very good, especially pedestrian navigation so will be great to see how the new version works.
My first smartphone was an E71 and it was an amazing device. If I didn't get such terrible T-Mobile and AT&T coverage in my area I would probably still use it.
Ovi means "Door" in Finnish. So, Door Store? Door Maps? Door Music? If they were gonna go scandinavian, they should've done it IKEA style. I mean I get that Sårsgaäard is a Swedish word and I just go with it. Ovi sounds like the plural of Ovum.
@Ryan Trevisol
Ovi is also the dative of ovis(latin for a sheep), thus the Ovi store can also mean "store for the sheep".
I like this more, seeing how Nokia is always going on about how many users they have.
Baaaaaa.
@hello5800xm Yes! Sheep Maps!
N900 still has no turn by turn on ovi maps. -.- Support your own handsets.
@KingFaisal94
Because the E71 and E66 are someone else handsets?
@KingFaisal94
Your name should be KingFAIL94.
What about the N95 8GB? It costs more than the E71... Release it already!
@nemuro "These two devices will also be the last of our S60 3.1 and older devices to sport this version of Ovi Maps."
guess you wont be getting a n95 version, sorry!
@nemuro
I wouldn't hope for that , if you want free navigation on N95 8Gb you should jailbreak it and install cracked version of Ovi Maps. Its a great device with amazing features but too old so Nokia wont mind trust me :D
@nemuro
Seems like the E66 version is compatible with the N95.
Where's the love for the E63 crowd?
@xirsteon
there is no GPS in E63 !
unless you think that they can add GPS to your mobile by installing an application
@Jabriiiz
ever heard of bluetooth and bluetooth equipped GPSs?
My love for nokia just grew a little bit more. AWESOME!!!
Just installed the new version, works great. Fun to get something this good for free.
@3me
But, but...according to Apple if you give something away for free the IRS will shoot your family so they HAVE to charge for giving features!
@Tes
does that include giving hugs??? on a lighter note...
postpone haircut to tomorrow? check!
count the hours until i get home? check!
tell the misses i will be driving my car around all evening with my voice guided navigation? double check!
Nokia 3210 should get the update also.
legacy phones??? I still waiting for my carrier to pick up the E71 - they claim they might offer it by the end of 2010!
Legacy? Seriously? So now according to TRicker, S60 is not only a non smartphone OS, it's also a legacy platform! Guess what, people are still buying devices with S60 3rd. Jeez.
@Imran : S60 3.1 is a legacy platform, yes. It's been a legacy platform since FP2 was launched. The current Symbian platforms are S60 3.2 (FP2) and S^1.
@Imran
s60 3rd phones are still being released (Nokia C5-00). There are not much alternatives if you want a basic non-touchscreen small smartphone and do not want a data plan
@marmaduke : Those devices aren't running S60 3.1, though, they're running a very heavily updated version of S60 3.2.
@sockatume
3.1 and 3.2 are quite similar and in fact most apps are compatible with both. I wouldn't call xp sp3 "legacy" if sp4 is being sold
anyway, I see no reason not to include this feature when A. Some 3.1 already have it. B. Virtualy every 3.x device is compatible with ovi turn-by-turn, albeit not free
I have Nokia E71x. what do I do? Is there ANY way that I can get this free on it? Please help ppl.
@redeyeskranti
Go to Nokia's site and download the Nokia Software Updater. It will ask you to connect your phone once installed, and then it will check for the latest firmware...you'll need that. Then you'll have to download Nokia Map Loader. This will update your Ovi Maps software as well as get maps for the regions you're interested in.
@redeyeskranti
change your product code to any other product code of regular e71 and then install unbranded software
google "change product code nemesis nokia" and will get some guides
@Jabriiiz I wouldn't do that! E71 is FP1 and E72 is FP2. You'd quite possibly brick your phone.
@Tes Is what you told for free navigation? Because I already have Ovi maps on my E71x. I want free navigation too.
@Vintage Eric Whoops, I mean the E71x is FP2, the E71 is FP1.
@redeyeskranti
Yes, you have Ovi Maps but you don't have the latest version which is the one with free nav. For example my N96, which does not have free nav has version 3.01 on it. You need 3.3.
@Tes But Nokia today released free navigation for E71 and not for E71x. Right?
@redeyeskranti
I don't know, if their software check goes as far as to lock E71x devices out of E71 software then I'm afraid you may be out of luck. Give it a try though.
@Jabriiiz I did some googling and found that E71x is not JUST a branded version of E71. Instead they have different version of OS(FP2 on E71x and Fp1 on e71) and also different hardware inside(like no radio and no front facing camera). So, they are apparently two different devices. So, I guess its not possible to unbrand E71x to E71. What say?
@redeyeskranti att really likes to mess with a good thing:
my wifi has nokia 6650 with att branding, att added two buttons one for their ptt (i think) and one for att navigator, both paid services so now keyboard is really cramped, plus lots of other crap. if i had known how different it is from unbranded nokia i would not have gotten it. i think you wont be able to unbrand your 71x to regular 71 with all that nokia did to it by att request.
I'm feeling that I'm going to have to smash my N96 against a wall with frustration!!!! Oh, and I'm sure if/when I would do it Nokia would make a ovi maps 3.3 for N96 the next morning grrrrrrr
