Xbox 360 update brings long-awaited USB storage support, SanDisk ready to cash in
Finally, the day has come. At some magical point in time during today, all you Xbox 360 owners will be prompted to update to the latest firmware for your beloved console. Once the tidy little exchange of data with Microsoft's servers has been completed, you'll at long last be able to plug USB memory sticks in and exploit a bit of functionality that frankly should've been there from the start. So that's it, all your game saves, profiles and other 360-related trinkets can finally be taken on the move without resorting to lugging a HDD around. In the mean time, SanDisk's previously rumored Xbox 360-branded $40 8GB flash drive is looking all the more real, with Amazon now offering pre-orders at a slightly less crazy $35 price point. You know, in case the millions of USB storage options out there aren't doing it for you.

I bet there are people at Sandisk having beers after work laughing about these XBox flash drives.
@taligent
I think the Microsoft boys will surely have joined them in
@mnhthebest
so if I plug in a 2GB flash drive will I get a Readyboost in performance ;-)
pheww, i didnt get banned like i thought i would, word to the wise, never buy anything over craigslist
@lv2bll54
Oh, it just takes a while, give it time.
@taligent
But will it do network share drives as well? Scrrew thumb drives.. im thinking NAS...
@taligent
They'll be snorting something too since Amazon has a 16GB Sandisk Xbox 360 drive for $70 on pre-order !!!
You do get one month of Xbox Live with it .... mmmmmmm
Already got it like 2 hours ago...its about a 2-3 min download over 6mbps DSL speeds.
too bad my xbox360 just got banned...otherwise, SWEET..
@unknownsolo
Congratulations on doing something to get yourself banned.
@Apocalyptic 0n3 np ;)
@unknownsolo
Can't you put the update to an USB disk and update from that? Or does having a banned Xbox means you can't get dashboard updates at all...
@Hellios cant do anything online at all, no updates, no dashboard news, nothing...you still can play games, just nothing online...
@Hellios
if you have the USB support update on a USB, how does even that WTF?
@cheami90 LMAO
@cheami90
Well you can even burn the patch to a CD or DVD.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/systemupdates.htm
@unknownsolo you can do updates just nothing with online usage you can go to xbox through the computer looking at the offline options
@unknownsolo what did you do, 9 mo. ago i bought a modded console over craigslist, didn't hurt that i didn't play it at the release of MW2 like every one else
@lv2bll54 probably one of those games got me banned, i dont even play much on it since im normally on my PS3, i didnt even play any game on the release date or before, it was off, and all of the sudden one day i decided to play some xbox and BAM, banned..(it was around when MS did that massive ban)
@Apocalyptic 0n3
Awesome! No one will forced to buy crappy overpriced Microsoft Memory Units anymore.
@Proverb NOPE..i believe reading the xbox360 will only accept 16GB partition max. MS strikes AGAIN..2 steps forward 5 steps back!
@neeko18 Yes cause you have over 16GB of savegames ;)
@Hamsteren People do install games and download DLC ya know....my 120GB HDD is down to under 12GBs
@Hamsteren
actually 3 or 4 saved (retail disk) Xbox games will finish16GB
Just a note about the update. While the minimum drive size listed is 1gb since not all 1gb drives are the same size your drive may or may not work. The drive must be at least 768mb (according to the configure tool on the 360) in reality and my 1gb drive freshly formatted maxes at 735mb free thusly making it unuseable on that flash 1gb flash drive.
@Ultratails42
Dude what are you talking about? You can have a flash up to 16GB.
@abedinthehouse
he said minimum as in the smallest drive you can use
@pballinuyasha
hahah wow, its late guess this is a sign I should get some rest
@abedinthehouse Re-read that again....slowly
@Ultratails42
1GB drives format to quite a bit more then 768MB.
@Peter F over time they gain bad sectors and degrade in size. There are a limited number of read/writes to any usb drive. Over a long period of time they will accually become smaller
SanDisk = Monster Cable of storage
@sweet greggo
no, sandisk has some of the highest quality flash drives, while being some of the cheapest
monster cable has some of the highest quality cables, while being the most expensive
@bigdonny
Wrong, Monster cables ARE NOT the highest quality. They are good, but not the best....especially not for Audio.
@abedinthehouse
Sandisk are true innovators in their field but Monster Cables are true innovators on ripping suckers off.
@sweet greggo Dont blame sandisk for that price....u can buy a 32GB thumbdrive from them for $40-50....just like with the Wii SD cards they make they put a fee on it....maybe to pay for the rights to out the console name on said storage device
@Chris DPSN AggieCEO XBLThe Aggi
your username makes me crazy
@sweet greggo Thats good...
since when did the xbox 360 accept a >300GB HDD?
@HW90
Yeah what's up with that? Someone has done something clever.
@HW90 Debug unit, probably.
@HW90 I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps Major Nelson has modified his console?
@HW90 @HW90 I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps Major Nelson has modified his console?
@carsonb
Damn why isnt he getting banned for this?
How come when I do it I get banned but he does?!?!
:(
Developer console: No restrictions.
@HW90
Seriously...WTF, I had to do a double take... 300GB...wtf...
@HW90 Major Nelson already said on his Twitter that it's a dev unit.
I was looking through ebay for some quality 16GB, and they were all at aroung $20-30....i know its stupid and a waste of money, but I just might buy one of these drives instead of a crappy one from Hong Kong that I have no idea about the life span or read/write speeds. And yes, there are some drives that fuck up after a month or two..
@abedinthehouse You'd buy a $35 8 GB drive from Amazon, instead of a perfectly good $35 16 GB drive (be it SanDisk or Kingston or someone else reliable) from Amazon?
