We've had a
Nexus One in daily use for a couple months now with relatively little drama, but Google's official support forums for the so-called superphone appear to be piling up a good head of steam on a handful of issues troubling owners. Perhaps the highest profile among them is the
3G signal strength issue -- a problem that predates the Nexus One's first and only firmware update -- but users are complaining about everything from unresponsive touchscreens, to failed text messages, to problems with the ambient light sensor, and there are enough "me too" responses in the support threads to warrant some serious attention. We know Google
hasn't been sitting on its hands behind the scenes, so this is probably more of a timing issue than anything else -- could it be that they're
waiting for Flash 10.1 before pushing the next release?
[Thanks, Ramon]
Thing is a total problem! I've had it for almost 2 weeks, and it's very alarming how many problems this phone has! Seriously, how can u justify selling a handset for over $500 and it be struck with all these problems. All I have to say is HTC better get there quality control on point! Should be interesting to see how the Incredible is made when it drops...hmmm???
No probs here since 15th of January.
I think this was a response to the Ipad issues.
I have the ATT nexus one and the only thing about it that bothers me is the softkeys work like 90% of the time. They should work approx. 100% of the time.
Not that big of a deal.

I blame At&t instead of the phone
/Oh wait
So I also have all those minor problems with the Nexus One. The one I have the biggest complaint about is the bluetooth issue (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?fid=4237c6559482904a0004835ad7898a1c&hl=en). There has been over 200 replies each stating the same thing: bluetooth functionality is incomplete. The bluetooth pairs and will make phone calls, but ends up disconnecting at one point. My bluetooth device disconnects after every call. You would think bluetooth would be a fundamental part of any phone. Good to hear that Engadget would put some pressure on Google.
@souliloquy "My bluetooth device disconnects after every call." Isn't it supposed to do that for power-saving purposes? Or did you mean it unpaired after ever call? That'd definitely be a bug, one my N1 doesn't share.
of course there are 3G problems, it's called t-mobile
Guys, I think that google's mistake is slathering the "Google" name on this phone when they didn't make it. This misrepresents the device to the consumer.
The real culprit in this case is HTC. They are the ones that manufactured this defective phone and they are the ones who are NOT fixing the problem, and they are the ones that have horrible customer service.
The "Cloud" works perfect. That's google's domain. What's failing is the phone. Unfortunately, google needs to step down from the cloud and realize that this HTC caused problem is hurting the Google image. However it is, they need to address the problem.
For some reason my N1 seem to lag sometime even if I use task killer then use just one apps (memory leak perhaps?). Also, the touch sometime register a wrong button press. Maybe if Adobe releases the flash early so it can shut my N1 problem whining down a bit.
Can't you people update the firmware yourself?
I mean, I got the impression you were all tech wizards who needs open source software cos you liked to mess around around with sort of low-level stuff?
No?
Oh yeah, open source just means you can download everything off the pirate bay rather than having to actually PAY for stuff
The Nexus one seems like a great phone for me, particularly since I want the best screen I can put in my pocket. But making phone hardware seems to be just sort of "hobby" for Google, so where to I go when I have problem? Getting a real person to talk to about a problem is not one of Google's strong points.
@appsman I have had no problem reaching someone. In fact, if you call Tmo at 611, their system automatically recognizes that you are on the Nexus One and will route your call to Google Nexus One support if you need tech support. In fact, the techs are quite "peppy" to say the least.
LOL, N1 owner here, it a huge pile of crap, and Google will never do a recall.
Thanks Google.
Yeah ive been having problems with my nexus one which im using in the uk on the orange network
Messages wont send even though I have full bars of reception. This happens with data to and although only happens from time to time its hugely frustrating.
Touchscreen loses calibration and you have to put the phone asleep to correct it. This fault would happen every other day and the screen can be so far off that pushing 2/3 of the way down can result in 1 of the 4 menu keys activating.
I love this phone but I feel like google and HTC really cheaped out in places they shouldn't have. If your going to have a device thats only imput is by the screen then you should damn well use a good screen. Same with the 4 menu buttons. How did they ever pass testing as they plain dont work right? they are awful. Only phone I would change it for would be the desire, but im holding on hoping for a fix.
My Nexus One is great...have the touch issues slightly, but have NONE of the 3G issues with T-mobile...
one thing I wish Google will do though is set a minimum spec for their Android phones.
Also they should've done their research on the touchscreens and whatnot hardware wise so instead of HTCs alleged lowest bidder usage we can at least get a moderate to great touchscreen experience.
After the initial awe of my phone in which I'dda given it a 15/10 I must say at this time it is hovering steadily at about 8/10...
Maybe they learned something by now.
Nexus One owner in the UK here. Have zero issues, the odd occasional but nothing out of the ordinary. Have had mine for 2 months and a very happy user. The only thing I miss is the amazing physical keyboard on my old bold 9700. But for me typing on the N1 is very nice and pleasant.
Everyone's waiting for flash 10.1...bring it out now or else Adobe!
UK Nexus One owner here. I've had no problems whatsoever. Everything's been dandy with me. To be honest, is this even news? I'm pretty sure this is recycling what some people said 2 or 3 months ago. I don't see a reason to re-report this unless you wanted to take light off another devices shortcomings which may have been revealed in the latest poll...
@chaddledee naaaaaaah!
@chaddledee
Agreed.
Can we have a down-rank article into oblivion feature?
Everything mentioned in this article is a straight up regurgitation of month-old things that have already been written about here anyway.
@chaddledee
It has been re-reported because I didn't see it the 1st time and I am/was about to buy a N1 via freight carrier since my country isn't in the list. Now I don't know anymore...
Its funny if Google gave about 7 people on the Support Forums a working phone, most if not all the major threads would be dead. You have to remember that not everybody post comments only a small fraction, I went a month without posting and now Engadget used the thread I started as an example. I think there should be a poll that would be really helpful.
Never wait on a separate company to fix your software...if Android is having issues on a Nexus One, Google should fix it immediately, not wait for Flash 10.1...
I'm on my third Nexus One. The first two had the screen calibration issue. My latest one hasn't had a single screen calibration problem. I would suggest to swap it until you get a good one. I will say that all three of the N1s that I've had all had bad 3G reception and speeds (Chicago area).
@kest009
For those that have had their phones now for a month or two waiting for a release and had hoped that this was a software issue are pretty screwed now only to find out it was a hardware issue.
The other bad part is how reception vanishes or degrades when you hold the Nexus One from the bottom.
@stylinexpat
Well hopefully it's just that my most recent device has a touchscreen that is on the "good" end of the tolerance range and people can still be helped with an OTA update...if not than swap...
Since I purchased this phone a software update has yet to be released. It's pretty weak especially for a Google branded phone. There are numerous things that should be fixed and added easily.
Is anyone else having video camera problems? Mine "blinks" a few times whenever there is movement, making it pretty much useless. Only time it works is outside in direct sun light. Wondering if this is an isolated thing that HTC will do a replacement on.
I have had my Nexus One for 2 months. I have sporadically experienced all the issues maybe once or twice.
However, 99% of the time my 3g coverage is rock solid, my messages get sent, my phone calls go through, my screen works fine, and the capacitive buttons below work as they should.
However, I did recently experience the dreaded "Too many pattern attempts" bug. My son was trying to unlock the phone and eventually after too many wrong entries, it asked for my Google Account credentials. Problem is that there is a bug which prevents the phone from verifying the credentials with Google's servers, so it won't recognize the password. The only fix is a hard reset, losing all data. But this bug was also seen on the G1, so it's not a N1 -specific bug. But I was still pissed!!!
Unfortunately, a minority of people have a lower tolerance of what is acceptable performance, and decide to rant about it on internet boards. They are either looking for 99.9999 performance success, or are just remorseful that they paid $529 for a phone that they probably bought on impulse.
My G1 used to have issues. My HTC Wing and HTC MDA used to have issues. No phone is perfect. Not even the iPhone or the Nexus One.
@biggbrother Its great that you don't have any problems but don't doubt that we in the forums aren't. My G1 and Google Ion never had problems but this phone is out of control. I have the touchscreen problems everyday and I always have 4 bars of 3G but everyday I get a error that says No Data Connection this effects app that need internet connection, sending and receiving text and getting dropped calls. Also I have a tower in front of my house on my property and I don't touch the screen while holding the phone and it still messes up. I should be getting my third phone in a few hours, I have lost faith in HTC since not one person who has got a replacement has said I don't have any touchscreen or data connection problems anymore. My cousin also has had the phone for 3 months and he does not have anything wrong with his but I keep getting lemons from HTC.
Nexus 1 vs. iPhone vs. Android....which would you rather buy if the service was all the same?
I had bad 3G karma with my N1 for about a week; I bought it the first week of March and had just the *worst* time transferring any data over the 3G connection -- I had 4 bars, I would send data out but get no data back.
Then, after about a week, the issues went away and I'm now able to get a solid connection to the 3G system down to about 1 bar before it switches back to EDGE.
When I first had this problem I called a contact inside T-Mobile who said it may be due to the HSPA+ rollout in my area (SLC Metro) that was not playing nice with the N1's transceiver. Doesn't seem likely, but anything is possible I suppose.
The only other bugs I've experienced aren't majour, like the home screen navigation "dots" sometimes get the count wrong (they say I'm on screen X when I'm really on screen Y), if I have Pandora and the Music Player both running and paused and I press play on my bluetooth remote they both start playing, and the Ambient Light Sensor doesn't turn up the brightness when I'm wearing sunglasses :)
All things considered, I'm pretty happy with it.
For anybody who says that the AT&T Nexus One doesn't have any problems please read this thread from one of your fellow AT&T users.
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/android/thread?tid=47dc569ca9667ba7&hl=en
I love my Nexus One. The only problem I'm having is the 3G issues and failed text messages. Touch screen works fine. I'm pretty sure Google has or is working on a fix. And as mentioned above I'm hoping the update is with Flash 10.1.
I would also like to see Google incorporate a working "Animal Translator" lol ; ^ D
I have connection problems with my G1/Dream, compared to the iPhone. I wonder if it's HTC's choice in chips.
I love how you're all blaming T-Mobile for the network issues, but then to see AT&T users report the same poor 3G reception issues, it MUST be T-Mobile!
No update in sight? Froyo is just around the corner. Calm down.
The only real issue I have had with mine is Bluetooth OPP file transfers are completely unusable. I ended up purchasing a $2 program for my PC that would allow me to browse my phone's files over BT since the OPP is broken to hell.
Other then that everything is working great for me.
Thanks for keeping the pressure on them, Engadget. I've had a phone since day one, and I did not have 3G issues at first, but lately my 3G has been going out all the time (even when it claims I have 5 bars I still can't download anything). Also, I am constantly getting the message "text message not sent." Whenever I post on the Google forums people tell me that it's a problem with the Tmobile network in my area, but it's clearly not since I have other phones that work great here, and the Nexus One worked great here at first. Let's hope they get an update out soon or get us replacement devices.
I have a suggestion for those of you with problems with the Nexus One in the US, file an FTC complaint.
Yesterday, my screen calibration went to hell and I couldnt even unlock my phone, had to do a battery pull.
Thats a fatal error in a device you should be able to make a 911 call with.
Whats sort of strange is the my N1 has gotten worse, I can watch it cycle from 5 bars to no service now...
https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en#last
@TFNN I did on Tuesday. What pisses me off is people who are leaving comments about that we are all just whining cause they don't have any problems. My cousin's phone that I bought on the same day as mine doesn't have any problems and when I tell him about mine he also acts like an asshole. To bad there isn't another phone on par with the Nexus One.
My Nexus one just keeps getting worst. Now I have wifi and bluetooth issues. I'm preparing a wifi video right now. Each day is a new set of problems. Even after 5 factory resets..
