We don't know what the future holds for the iPhone OS. Will we see multitasking? Will there be widgets? Will Apple forgo the whole idea of icons in exchange for constantly mutating digital lifeforms? Luckily, we're less than 24 hours from finding the answer to those questions (and hopefully many more). We'll be bringing you live, up-to-the-minute coverage of Apple's event starting tomorrow morning, delivering each astounding factoid with the speed and precision that only Engadget can provide. Tune in at the times (and URL below), and be prepared for more magical revolutions.

We might be more likely to find out that Mr. Jobs is a cylon before we get anything substantial. Where's Dr. Baltar (or more appropriately the cylon detection) when we need them.
@quadrilacious
unfortunatly Galactica's resources haven't allowed for the creation of the cylon detector iPad App yet.
C'mon Apple, make daddy proud.
Very simple...
- widgets (ex. see calendar from the home screen)
- improve battery life (like something in the iPad)
All will be well.
Apple will re-invent multitasking tomorrow and call it something like itask - F&*cking c*7ks
The unified inbox rumor is probably my favorite right now. I really do want that. Other than that, I'd like to see an overhaul of the notifications system and maybe a better way to organize apps.
I really don't care about multitasking at all. I'd be perfectly happy if they would just let their own Safari and SMS apps run on top of a 3rd party app.
..and Sydney time zone?
@yoggit and others
How hard is it to work out the Australian times from the one's posted in the article.
Anyway, It's 3am AEST, and the whole east cost are all in the same time zone. lols.
PLEEZ brodcast in 3D!
@JW
if they had apple booth babes and it was broadcast in 3d that would definitely make it worthwhile. Then again apple never had or needed any booth babes to demo it's wares or entice it's followers. Only the messiah sufficed...
Hopefully background multitasking and tabbed browsing
I predict disappointment. Everyone expects multitasking, but I don't see it except in the most limited sense.
You know what would be sweet, ability to customize w/o jailbreak. Maybe just a background would be good enough for me to buy one , but that would be a sing of weakness form our gadget overlords at Apple.
@Tman3k
Really? A wallpaper is what holds you back? That's really funny.
With how tightly the icons are packed on the iPhone/iPod screen a background image makes it look horrible. Geez - talk about busy.
@ebgolfin
Very true, its not the wallpaper itself I just want a little freedom. And a blank homescreen for the first page would be a work around. Don't get me wrong, I love iPhones because I make a LOT of commission off them but I wouldn't mind having some iPhone features with a little more flexibility.
@ebgolfin
Wallpapers....lol happened.
The problem is the rooted DROID is so far ahead of the iphone and changing so fast there is no hope for the iphone to catch up. That's the problem with a closed platform.
the AM/PM instead of the 24h format is an american thing or just yours? if it is yours, you should change it. if it is from US, you should change it.
tell me! Bangkok Thailand !? >
Apple launched 2 new Ads for iPhone - Concert and Shopper

We want Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets, Widgets.
@Newwales
Eh, I don't understand the obsession with widgets. I absolutely hate them on my desktop.
@ebgolfin I i want to see the weather I dont want to click on an app, I just want to see the weather in the home page.
If I want to see my next meeting I dont want to click on an app I just want it to display on the home screen.
For a change Apple needs to catchup with other manufacturers & add helpful widgets to the home screen, if not the iphone will become just an app phone.
they r probably gonna release iad and not stuff we want like iphone hd
@tech404
Looks at Invitation graphic....
Yea you're probably right.
I wonder when it's going to be released...
Quote from last years 3.0 event.
"We were asked, why don't you do background processing? It's bad for the customer. It drains battery."
So 1 year later, have they changed their minds?
@DelGatto
Um. It does. Guess what? There's such a thing as better cheaper smaller batteries. Alot can change in a year.
@DelGatto
Well, I can't see them releasing background processing for 3rd party apps unless they truly find a way to minimize the hit on the battery. If they can find a way to do it, then I'm sure they'll release it.
They're not going to move forward with iPhone OS just for the sake of moving forward. It's only going to happen when both the hardware and the software implementation are ready. Will this mean certain features will always be left out until future developments? Of course.
I predict that whatever Apple announces, the armchair experts on here will declare it rubbish. Meanwhile, world and dog will love it.
Can't wait for the liveblog to start.. oh 1PM when will you arrive?
All I really want as a change is a revamp of the notification system so it is less intrusive on the user and the ability to organize applications into groups for quick access.
Anything else is welcomed by me with open arms but don't really care.
I honestly can't wait for this. I always wonder what they will fix and what new things will come up but this time I'm just expecting to see the Multi Tasking come to life. Too bad I feel that the iPhone 3G is a bit under-powered for this giving its limited onboard memory and underclocked processor. But, there was also some rumors going around of some UI optimization tweaks which might speed things up in this update.
The only other thing I'm waiting for is the announcement of the "iPhone 4G","Verizon Version" or the Rumored "iPhone HD" which at this time does make sense considering the new beefier variations out there with much larger screen resolutions and 1Ghz processors, (not naming them in fear of starting a flame war)
I'm gripping my seat right now!
Suggestion: Greenwhich Mean Time. For every liveblog I read, it means a google search for time zone conversions. While I admit that GMT is far from common comprehension, it's much easier to have just one number than 6 or 7.
Well even without a lot of the features that other phones have had, the iPhone still ranks the highest in customer satisfaction. So to me, its not like I'm expecting them to do anything revolutionary, I'm just excited to see how well and user friendly they are going to implement a new feature, because that something that i believe they have done right every time.
are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet? :oP
i think they will introduce a removable battery. THAT will be the big update.
Exited!
The thing I want most is a better way to organize apps. If I am going to get the new phone this summer, it will be a 32GB one and I need better app organization.
Wow. Such an overwhelming response here on the Engadget forum.
I believe Apple will make some slight changes to make the phone more convenient - but I wouldn't expect a complete overhaul.
With that said, and after reading some of the comments here...I think a lot of you are right. There needs to be a multitasking function, better battery life and a stronger customization option, but with that said...
What more do you want out of a phone that is already, so awesome?
@creativefeed
@CreativeFeed Nothing really, as the apps add to the extra experience. As I stated just small changes would make me happy. I'm not in favor of the widgets but wouldn't complain if they were there.
I will say that I'm also not in favor of multitasking. I seriously do not understand the reason for it on a mobile device. It is not like we, as users, can do two or more things at the exact same time. We, as humans, are limited to single tasking but only able to juggle multiple tasks at once. Also, it is not like we run SETI@home on mobile devices.
Many would argue that multitasking would be good for IM clients and other social applications. Well, I'll agree with that but I bet these are the same people that do/will complain about battery life.
Overall, I won't complain if it is given to us but really I don't see a need for it. I say, just a nice clean up to make some things less intrusive and open that door a bit more for customization and organization and I'll be happy.
please have some news on the new ipod touch
it would be awsome if the new iphone had widgets instead of those annoying kinda-squares that cover the whole screen, couldn' they just take a page out of the app developers book for jailbroken iphones?give the people what they want!
I hope they add magic in 4.0. I was so pissed when I just purchased an iPhone and found out the iPad would be magical.
I am excited to see what's next for this platform.
I look forward to doing more things with my iphone! :D
